They used a boar bristle brush to distribute either natural oils or added oil. People still do this today. It's good for some people's hair... it doesn't work for me. They also detangled with a comb that would have been oiled.

Hello I can reply to this, the podcast beauty brains has an episode on April 9th about bond builders. This podcast is by cosmetic chemists who break down skincare but actually specialize in hair care. Their summary was that it is doing something for the hair but possibly not what is claimed and possibly over claimed in their patent, as it doesn’t have to hold up to peer reviewed science. Essentially, it had to do with different types of bonds and olaplex claims to strengthen disulfide bonds which would be extremely hard to do, however their are other types of hydrogen and electrostatic bonds and of course there are conditioning agents, keratin, amino acids, or conditioners in these products. the acid used actually displaces water, which can be perceived as strengthening the hair and facilitate these other bonds. So strengthing hair yes.....but more extreme claims.....

Thank you for sharing all your dry/damaged hair suggestions. Here are things I do for my dry/color treated hair: use a conditioner in the shower, then also use a leave in conditioner on wet hair. I hold the dryer about 6inches away from my hair and focus on the roots, always moving the dryer back and forth. Let the rest air dry. Sometimes I use coconut oil on the ends and brush in. All this works well for me and it doesn't cost very much. Have a great day ❤👏❤

In the 80's, I unfortunately basically ruined my hair with countless perms. I was left with very dry, brittle hair. My hair has never been the same since and as I've gotten older, I haven't been able to find any product that would make my hair soft and shiny. I don't use a curling iron or a flat iron but I do blow dry. I will take your tips and hopefully you can do for my hair what you've done for my skin! Thank you so much!! Happy Friday, Dr Dray!! Have a beautiful evening. 🐟🐝🐟
@sable7114
@sable7114 4 года назад
May I ask why do you blow dry? I cut out all the Heat. If you shampoo in the mornings, can you change that to night time so that your hair can dry overnight like dr. Dray's? If you are blow drying because you have curly hair and you don't want curly hair or don't want to wear your hair curly always, you can try stretching it in a different way. Would you mind a light oil to help with the shine such as jojoba oil at Trader Joe's? I tried that and I seem to notice more shine and it really only takes two or three drops rubbed between your palms depending on the thickness of your hair of course.

I know dry because I have shirt, fine hair and it helps give it volume. I need to shampoo and blow dry in the morning for that reason. Because my hair is so fine, a lot of the hair oils just weigh it down. I've tried many different products but not with the results in looking for including some higher end products recommended by my hair dresser. Thanks for your response. 😊

oh boy...that took me back. Creme Rinses, late 50s-60s There were some deep conditioners WAY back then! Wella & Clairol had deep conditioners that came in big tubs that you left on, preferably under a plastic cap, up to an hour before rinsing out. V05 also made little tubes of 'oil' that you heated up in a cup of hot water before applying . I remember those as really good. Some brand had a product called 'cholesterol' (?) in those big tubs & were very effective too. we would have been amazed at the assortment of available hair products on the shelves today. My mother washed my hair in that emerald green shampoo 'Prell'.

Out of curiosity... I recently started to apply some CeraVe lotion on my scalp after my showers to help with the dryness and flakiness. I like the results so far. My scalp feels soothed and less itchy. And to me this a cheaper alternative to buying a fancy "hydrating shampoo." But that got me wondering, what would be the effects of such lotion on the actual hair strands? 🤔 Can skin moisturizers (hyaluronic acid) have any impact - whether it's good or bad- on the hair itself?

If you have to wash your hair more than once a week, your hair is "oily", and then the flakes are not from dry hair, but from oily hair and a yeast overgrowth, something called SD aka seborrheic dermatitis. I suffer from it, and all it takes is a medicated shampoo (Nizoral 2%). No need to rub cream on the scalp, possibly making it worse in the long run. What is so terrible about SD is that if you leave it too long you can lose hair over it! So be careful!
@amixeblu
@amixeblu 4 года назад
@Diana Moore We understand each other then. :D It can be annoying, but I have found that in between "bouts" of it, that if I cleanse well (sulfate shampoo), that it helps keep it at bay. It's been a year since I last had to use my medicated shampoo this way.

I do not usually buy products for my hair but when I saw your video I decided to buy the Bumble and Bumble because it does offer good benefits, unfortunately, it does have Fragrances which can be toxic and for me the smell is pungent. @Dr Dray I want to thank you for bringing this information forth because I have such a hard time finding products I can use. I have always been sensitive to strong perfumy scents which has gotten worse with age. I also have sensitive skin which was worse when I was younger so I have always had to be cautious with what I used. I remember being a teen & tried a trendy antiperspirant which caused a painful rash that took forever to heal. I never dealt with acne but would react to products I used on my face or skin. Believe it or not the product I use to wash my face would probably be on your list of things to avoid but it has worked for generations in my family, Noxema. I try to avoid fragrance in my skin care since the only scents which are very light are a cucumber or a pomegranate in the moisturizer. I wish people would start to put their efforts behind removing fragrances since it causes more issues than the additives they consider evil. I know they are trying to stay on trend but as you said they are not as much of a problem as they believe & are only replaced with something else which they know nothing about. Anyway thank you for your help, there are so many products out there & finding ones that do not cause issues is hard. I will add especially now when we are no longer allowed to even go to a store to smell a product. I think this may end up effecting the sales of higher end products since the ability to actually see, feel & smell them have been removed. That was one advantage to buying prestige brands prior to CV19.

Keratin treatments or Brazilian blowouts? Has helped my coarse, curly hair with manageability and frizz and reduces the need to straighten or heat style my hair. But does it have long term effects to the keratin proteins in your hair? Hard to find any information on this

In my personal experience, yes. It was good at first but months in my hair was just as fried as if I had relaxed it. It's been 4 months since you made this comment, do you agree or is your hair still doing well?

The thing with silicones, at least some, is that you need a harsher sulfate to wash them out of the hair properly. If you know that, that's fine, but some don't and use silicones in their conditioners and stylers and don't cleanse enough leading to clogging and product build-up. I clarify-wash every wash (every week), and use silicones in my products without any hiccups. I love the "slip" they give the hair and I need it or my hair will knot up! :)

Ever since COVID started, I grew out my very short hair. Now, I love using the super-cheap Pantene rose leave-in silicon-free for my thin, straight, fine hair. I suspect there is a reason it is cheap, though… it helps me to put a bit of deep conditioner into my hair, when I lightly braid it for sleeping & keeping my hair off my face. With hot flashes, having it braided keeps me from getting a hot flash if the hair gets around my neck… ❓ QUESTION: Japanese hair & scalp clinics are hella into scalp exfoliation & serums. About once a month, I mix some baking soda into some CeraVe cleanser & give my scalp a light buff, since 8 don’t have dandruff, but I am prone to oily buildup, since I have thin hair, but enough oil production for a full head. (Copper damages hair 😳)

Would love to hear your take on Brazilian blowouts or keratin blowouts. Hard to find info on this from dermatologists. While they are chemical treatments, Brazilian/keratin blowouts are marketed as keratin treatments, and so am not sure they can be lumped under conventional straightening methods (which damage/strip off keratin structure).

@netcatzpj the invisible oil do not feel as heavy as other oils I have tryed. I have from natures side oily hair so I struggled to find something that would not aggravate that problem, my hair is easier to detangle when I use it and of course the UV filter protects the color since I dye my hair 😃

If you only color your hair 2-3 times a year you’ll be putting us hairstylists out of work! Haha. Demi-permanent color contains no ammonia and deposits only, which makes it more gentle in the hair. Also, getting regular trims every 6-10 weeks will help to keep it healthy. Bumble makes great products all around - great recommendation!

Here's another question I hope Dr. Dray is able to answer. I use a heat protectant (oil) for hair every day. I like it cause it makes my hair shine and feel soft. But is heat protectant the same as spf for hair? Or is it possible that even though this oil protects it when blow-drying my hair, it still isn't doing anything against uv rays? Do I need to buy a product for hair that specifically reads spf on the label?
@nikkix2896
@nikkix2896 4 года назад
I think SPF and heat protectant are separate things but I could be wrong. It should say on your bottle if it has spf in it. But I’m not certain
@alexlojo6498
@alexlojo6498 4 года назад
@@nikkix2896 I'm inclined to believe so as well. But tbh, finding products online that are labeled "spf for hair" isn't as easy as finding hair protectants. And the ones that actually are labeled that way, can be really expensive. On top of that, those either don't specify the factor or simply don't go above spf15. To me, this aspect is the least straight forward out there in terms of disclosure and actual benefits beyond marketing techniques. 🤷‍♂️ That's why I'd like to hear from Dr. Dray regarding this topic. 😉

My mom is fully gray, but it totally washes her out (doesn't suit her). She's 74 and she dyes it 3 to 4 times a year only (because she knows it is a damaging process), in a mid-tone blonde shade so you don't "much" see the gray come in. My hair is wavy/curly and over the bum length (classic length). I brush it out damp (after it's out of the microfiber towel) with a Wet Brush. These things are even better than a wide tooth comb (pull less, and less hair comes out). I would totally recommend, at least for my "loose" texture.

Hey Dr. Dray, I can’t remember if you’ve mentioned the new Physician’s Formula Natural Defense Foundation SPF 30 in a drugstore walkthrough. For anyone interested- It’s got octinoxate in it as well as zinc and titanium dioxide. It does have fragrance in it, which is always bad, but the actual sent itself is basically undetectable. I got it to try and I have to say, I like it. It’s not better than the Colorscience Face Shield, not even close. I have that and like it way more. But this does leave more of a matte finish. I wouldn’t call this a foundation whatsoever. It’s a tinted sunscreen. It does leave a bit of a white cast still but the tint covers that up a lot. All in all I’m not mad it. For $12 I think it’s a good tinted sunscreen for people, although I wish it didn’t have fragrance. I was shocked it didn’t have some weird plant oil in it, at least not that I could tell. Also, if you look online it has really mixed reviews. I’m suspecting that that’s because PF has really mis-marketed this product. They should’ve said it’s a tinted sunscreen and not a foundation. It’s weird that they have a concealer with it but the powder is probably nice for shininess and dusting on SPF.

All great advice if you have good hair. Unfortunately, I have crappy super fine, flat, do nothing hair that is the colour of blah together with a naturally high hairline. So no, I will not stop colouring my hair regularly nor blow drying. That being said, I stopped perming my hair back in the 80s, because in addition to being crappy, super fine hair is hopelessly fragile. It is the reason I use the low setting on my hair dryer. I have also worn a hat in the summer for over 30 years, which in addition to protecting my skin, caused one of my hairdressers to remark on how well my colour stayed (in other words, little if any oxidation). So two birds with one hat. 😉 I stay away from oils as it is a disaster for super fine hair unless you like a flat gooeyness as a hair style. I apply conditioner only to the ends because it will flatten it otherwise. I choose deep conditioners carefully for the same reason. The natural state of my hair means, despite girlhood dreams of hair like Jacqueline Smith's, short hair styles are best to maintain volume, so I get regular trims. Round brushes are my tool of choice and I am always looking for that miracle volumizing spray that doesn't cost a million dollars and actually works. I have found a few; however, they always seem to be discontinued by idiot companies. My hair is in good shape over all, though the joys of menopause have resulted in scalp dryness being more of an issue.

Did I understand correctly? You recommend using a UV primer instead of a purple shampoo for graying hair? I have wavy/curly hair, and if I use a silicone conditioner my curls disappear, if I don't, my hair gets extremmely frizzy. Any suggestions?
