i'm so glad you mentioned the first one bc if *one* more person tells me it's bad for my hair that i wash it everyday or that "all i have to do is train it" i'm going to explode. i've tried "training it" numerous times for years (including during quarantine) & it never, ever adjusts. some people just have an oily scalp y'all 😅😅 it's hereditary for me

That's interesting, I have heard other haircare people say that you should shampoo as infrequently as you can without being gross haha so if it's everyday then that is fair enough! I also have oily skin and probably scalp too so I'm hoping it gets better with age!

I’m glad Dr Dray clarified that while washing hair every day is fine for a lot of people, it isn’t for everyone. My hair is so dry and I’ve seen a ton of improvement by going a few days between washes instead of every day like I used to. I wash twice a week, which is the perfect amount for me. Any longer and I start getting greasy hair, but go any shorter regularly and my ends start looking really bad. While a lot of people can wash every day and be fine, that isn’t the case 100% of the time.
@Elizabeth-mn6lm

Okay, as someone who is crazy about hair care and has very long and healthy hair for years, I was skeptical about the video, but actually I was surprised! Everything said in the video is true and I'm glad finally someone with a bigger platform is trying to stop the spread of these myths. Like dr Dray said, wash your hair everyday if your scalp needs it. Trim the ends only if your hair needs it. Observe your hair and how it looks after certain products. Silicones are not that bad and actually they're great for protecting the end of your hair or whenever you feel like your hair is more prone to breakage. One more thing I'd add is that yes, your hair does not get used to products, but it may need change in the ingredients. For instance, your hair is supposed to have a balance between proteins, humectants and emollients. So if you use only one conditioner with mostly emollients, your hair will lose its volume, it will be heavy and it will turn into thick strands of hair. On the other hand, if you use too many humectants, your hair will be frizzy, puffy etc. That's why I recommend having a couple of conditioners to keep PEH balance. BTW. I do not know if I recommend the function of beauty. Just read about them on reddit and the ingredients they put before buying.

More people need to watch this video. There's so much misinformation about shampoo and hair washing going around that people are recommending to not use shampoo. While that may work for some people, maybe people with drier scalps, for someone like me with sebbhoreic dermatitis on my scalp, that is the worst advice I could receive. Ever since I started washing my scalp more I noticed my scalp is in better condition and my hair looks fuller. I swear at one point it was thinning because I wasn't using shampoo often enough. Now it looks great again

I wish that you was my dermatologist. I feel like my dermatologist doesn’t care a lot about her patients like you do. The first time that I saw her, which was to go on Accutane, she wanted me to buy a $100 facial lotion that she created and she knew that I was on Medicaid so she should have known that I wouldn’t be able to afford something that high in price. She is the only dermatologist in my city that takes my insurance so I have no choice in trying to find a different dermatologist.

If you're going in for something like accutane, ask for the active ingredients. At pharmacy you can ask for a generic(some pharmacies will consult with your doctor to switch to one) buy it should get you out of using whatever $100 cream she's recommending. 1. You can shampoo everyday (if you can) 2. There’s nothing such as “grow hair” shampoo, consistent cleansing of scalp helps with hair loss and dandruff 3. Frizzy and Unmanageable hair can be caused by too much moisture (conditioner for the end of hair only) 4. Wet hair is more sensitive 5. Coconut oil is recommended (before shower) or put it at the end of the hair 6. Cutting/Trimming doesn’t affect the growth of hair. It doesn’t help with hair loss. You can cut the part of breakage hair if you want

I know it's probably too much, but most days I feel the need to wash my hair twice a day, in the morning and at night. Granted, I live in Brazil, so its very hot, and besides, I must have some kind of condition that I am still unaware of, because I'm always feeling so hot and sweaty ALL THE TIME, even when everyone else around me is feeling just fine. It's really bothersome, really. I can't imagine what it will be like for me when I hit menopause. I have severe seborhea in my scalp and itchiness also. Once a doctor told me I should wash my hair every single day and it made it a LOT better, because my scalp really cannot tolerate not being washed frequently. And if I'm feeling hot and sweaty I feel so botherered and miserable. So having my hair freshly washed helps me feel as if my whole body temperatura is cooler.

I wish you would have addressed the fact that when you have split ends (which is inevitable) those splits can travel up the hair shaft, continuously splitting, and then breaking 3, 4 or 5 inches up from the bottom of your hair. This breakage then makes it APPEAR like your hair isn't growing which is why a lot of people find their hair grows "faster" when it's trimmed regularly. The reality is by getting regular trims you're preventing that split end from doing more damage.
@LifeFilmz
@LifeFilmz Год назад
If the damage is inevitable as you said then trims are not preventing anything, trims are strictly for the hairs appearance by creating better shape/symmetry it’s not preventing the inevitable.

You just get used to the feeling of a dirty scalp. Ew. Just wash your hair. We have lovely products now that don’t harm your hair. When I was a kid, we only washed our hair once a week because shampooing frequently actually did harm hair. That’s because our shampoo was basically dish soap, harsh. I do remember how smelly my hairband got from all the dirt and oils. Now the shampoo is actually good for your hair and scalp. Old wives tales just keep hanging on even when circumstances change.

My hair is fine and oily, I wash my hair daily. I remember my mother only washed her hair weekly. As she aged her thick hair thinned. I believe partly due to hairspray buildup on the scalp. This product allows me to go 3 days in between Washings, makes my hair feels so soft and wonderful. The can lasts me about a month-and-a-half to two months. If you haven't already, you could also try ditching the conditioner if your hair is as short as it is in the picture there. Might work better for you. If the oils have no trouble reaching the ends, as it shouldn't with short straight hair and a regular amount of oil production, then it's generally not necessary and makes the scalp oily quicker, which can lead to some annoying stuff sooner. Hair should still come out nice and soft.

I've tried shampooing every other day and it was a no-go for my hair (coarse, thick, straight). It left my scalp and hair dry, and too voluminous for my liking. I discovered my hair looks best on the second and thrid day, so I switched to shapooing up to 2 times/week (3 times if hot weather/I'm sweating a lot), and haven't gone back. So I definitely agree that shampooing frequency depends on hair type and there isn't a one-size-fits-all.

@katherinemorelle7115
@katherinemorelle7115 3 года назад
I think this mostly comes from different hair types having different needs. And because the Curly Girl Method specifically was pushing this idea- and they get a lot of their hair are ideas from the natural hair movement. Which means that a lot of those tips are great for people with very dry, very curly or textured hair. But not so much for anyone else. For me, I wash my hair every week or two. But my hair is super dry, as is my scalp. I never appear oily. Ever. Which is pretty handy when you’re disabled and can’t wash your hair often anyway- no one can tell when I lay washed my hair. It’s not as soft by the end of my wash cycle, but it’s never oily. In fact, I put leave in conditioner and extra hair oils in to it every couple of days, and I need to. So for some people, washing less often is definitely better for their hair. Shampoo can be pretty harsh on very dry (as on oil-free, not as in water free. Just like skin) hair. As can getting it soaking wet, because water swells the hair shaft, which makes it more vulnerable to breakage. So if you have very dry and very curly hair, washing less often is the way to go. But straight hair, or hair that isn’t super dry- washing more often is the way to go. I really dislike when people give proclamations that they say apply to everyone. That’s never the case, because everyone has different needs, and the best thing to do is to work out what works best for you and your specific situation and goals.

What about hair oils? In our culture, oiling the hair is a big thing. We would always be made to oil our hair (coconut oil mostly on the scalp and the lengths) before shampoo as kids, and that's something that I still continue to do well into my adult life as well. I have dry, dandruff prone scalp, and my dermat had advised me to stop oiling my hair and prescribed me a keto + zinc shampoo. So I did that for many years, but my dandruff would get worse in the dry winters. So now for the last year or so, I have gone back to oiling my hair overnight and washing off with shampoo in the morning. And believe it or not, my dandruff has improved since! Now if I don't oil my hair before shampoo, my scalp gets so much more drier, and dandruff gets just so much worse. And as for hair growth, in my personal experience, when I use certain type of oils like some oils from the Ayurvedic clinic, it does make my hair grow faster.

So I’m not a doctor I’m just a cosmetologist but I will say I have seen people have personal results with hair regrowth from tea tree shampoos/ oils applied to the scalp combined with gentle dry brushing to stimulate the follicles. Yes, our current medical literature doesn’t say that it works. But my bigger question is, have they even been peer reviewed studies saying that they *do NOT* work. If we don’t have conclusive evidence saying that they do not work, we cannot rule them out. Also, rogaine does work quite well. It’s a topical hormone applied to the scalp but like any orher medication for it to work you need to use it continually. If you stop using it, it stops working and the regrown hair will fall out along with any hair it kept from falling out.

@Banferti
@Banferti 3 года назад
@@meadowsmama9423 I agree hardcore on that as well (as a licensed cosmetologist) the problem with derm is they are looking at medical studies and most people don’t go to a dermatologist unless they have a problem. I see people with and without problems, so it gives me a wide variety of people to work with. I think how often you should be washing your hair in my professional opinion is depending on your hair type and what issues you have. If you hair is colored and bleached, definitely not every single day. If you have ethnic hair, definitely not everyday. If you have excessive oilyness or a skin condition like dandruff, or eczema, you probably need to wash it everyday with a specialized shampoo (medicated). It’s down to personal choice, personal preference and your actual body. Everyone’s body and body chemistry is different, and will react different ways. Try different things, do what works for you best. I think the problem is she’s probably working with a lot of people with severe dandruff, or scalp eczema when I only deal with a handful of people with that and most of my clients have relatively normal scalps and not too many scalp conditions.

As a curly girl, I avoid harsh cleansers at all cost. I don't feel the need to use them, my scalp isn't dirty, washing once per week with a sulfate-free cleanser is enough. I follow the curly girl method by Lorraine Massey, therefore only use water soluble products, so I don't get buildup (most people claiming they follow cgm actually use heavy oil and butter based products + waaay too many of them and then expect gentle cleansers to remove it... and when it doesn't work, they run around blaming cgm... sadly...)

My understanding is that the one sulfate to probably avoid is sodium LAURYL sulfate. That sulfate is the one scientists use as a comparison when testing the irritancy of ingredients. Ok, but “wash your hair daily” AND “too much moisture” i.e. water from washing, leaves hair brittle and prone to damage. This is contradictory, no?
@J_Mock92
@J_Mock92 3 года назад
It's prolonged exposure to moisture (like the humidity in the air) that causes the most damage. Moisture causes the hair shaft swell, which opens up the cuticle, making the hair brittle, which leads to damage. Water from washing isn't much of an issue, as long as you're following with something conditioning and aren't being aggressive. Conditioner coats the hair and smooths down the cuticle, which acts as a sort of barrier to help keep out excess moisture.
@heredianna2496
@heredianna2496 3 года назад
Water from washing also damages hair obviously as your hair is soaking wet for some time hence disturbing the positioning of the hair cuticles. You can minimize that by using a conditioner or a leave-in conditioner or by applying coconut oil before shampoing. The sun damages hair the wind damages hair, time damages hair but we need to live... Hair is dead so pretty much everything damage it so you can only minimise the damage. We have to wash our hair so just take preventative measures.

My hair is pretty long and very healthy and shiny, it's grown a little more than 30cm in 2 years (11.8 inches). That's an average of 1,25cm a month (0.49 inches) which is pretty average. Suggestion for Part 2: "Train" scalp/hair to not need as many washings? This, supposedly, entails going longer between each washing until you have it where you want it. I had a hairdresser who "trained" her scalp/hair to only need washing once a month by (according to her) going from washing her hair every day to washing it every other day (for a designated period of time-say, a month), then she'd wash every three days (same thing - for a designated period of time), then every fours days...You get the picture. For the record - that crap didn't work for me! I was ripping my scalp to shreds scratching there was so much build up by the time I got to the every 4 days washings. (She didn't use hair products that would "stay" - for instance, hair spray. I don't/didn't use them either.)

I would like to request that you do a myth busting video about curly hair "methods" and products. Thank you for your consideration.

I experienced COVID that lasted a good 12 days. At first, I believed I was ok until I started to notice a loss of more hair than normal. Following some research, I am realizing it’s from the stress my body went through during that time and also due to the shampoo I had been using. So I started doing meditation, yoga daily and changed my shampoo and conditioner to littleextrraa coooconion anti hair fall kit. And now i dont face any hair fall. Thanks for this video! I'm feeling so much better.

This liitlleextra cooconiion oil contains rosemary, coconut, onion, hibiscus, which are known as superfoods for hair growth. I loved its texture. Smell is mild and not too overpowering. In summary, it’s a great product and it has reduced my hair fall by more than 75%.

I’ve always heard this, but I never understand it. I hear that your hair is constantly shedding and replacing itself naturally and that you’re supposed to lose 100-200 hairs a day. This doesn’t make sense to me because it would take years for even one hair to grow completely back the length of the one I lost. So how do I still have a head full of hair losing that much hair per day?

Because while some of your hair shed others still grows at the same time. You have more har growing than hair shedding at what given time. Cycles are done in such a way that you can't see the difference. It's like plane. Although gravity exist and a plane should fall on the grown at the same time there is an other force, a stronger one that maintain it in the air if that makes sense for you. When you notice that your losing hair density that means that your loosing too much hair than normal and there is something going on...

Is it a myth that you should rinse your hair with cold water after you washed it? I always do it because I have curly thin hair and I'll try every trick to make it less frizzy, but I don't think that has any scientific back up! Or is it helpful to massage your scalp with coconut oil to stimulate the hair folicules and promote hair growth? Thank you so much for your videos 🤗
