Prof. Adam Alter Discusses New Book, "Irresistible", with Malcolm Gladwell 

I just finished the groundbreaking book, Irresistible, and would like to thank Professor Alter for creating such a masterpiece. Because of your work, I can now make sense on what is going on with people and their cell phones.

Indeed, I don’t think swiping through our phones is going to make us different nor strengthen our individuality. It only makes us the same, the same in a way that we no longer think about the world outside our phones, therefore losing the ability to think and evaluate things independently, while lacking in personality and speciality.

i use a samsung s6 from 2015 and it sucks. it never works. its an incredibly inconvenient blessing in disguise.

*With respect to Gladwell's point at **46:30**, it's actually not that odd. The reason for the phone company's desire to have people not gossiping was because the resource was more scarce at that time. Gossiping meant tying it up, and preventing someone else from using it. Note the Internet was the same way, in the early days. There was a warning posted to all users of Usenet, that before they posted a message, make sure it was meaningful and hadn't been said already, because it was going to cost significant money and resources to forward and maintain forever across the Usenet system. Note that the Internet has taken the same path as the telephone, where usage norms evolved as it became cheaper and more prevalent. It just happened to take 40 years in the telephone's case. But it was still driven by business decisions (i.e., providing the telephone service to more people, and not having individual users tie up the resource.)*
