You should follow this advice if you want to live doing something you don't like, and having your opinion of yourself be measured by your financial success.

I could say most of these have helped me, but the one I would promote until my deathbed will be #6. So many people that I have seen lunge at the first chance to have that sports car or oversized house only to watch those things drag them down financially. I got certified (#1) with an MBA, invested in variance (#3) by learning to speak foreign languages and moved to a big city (#4). But the one defining element for my success was to not spend money when I got it. I bought my first, and only, new car just before my 40th birthday, despite having a six-figure income. Delaying satisfaction and having substantial savings paid dividends when the financial crisis came and I was one of the few people with cash on hand. In 2012 I had down payments for two investment properties that have more than quadrupled in value. Ten years later I own five houses, a half acre of land for future development, a net worth in the millions and I still drive my 10 year-old Ford Focus. Delay gratification and eventually the market swings will present opportunities that will make others say that you "fight unfair." (#10)

This was by far and away one of the best TinyTedTalks I've ever seen.

I like some of what Scott says about doing what you're good at (or could become good at) instead of just following passion. Where I tend to think the problem lies in the premise: we don't derive joy from our careers. Instead, a career is a byproduct of the preexisting values and beliefs we learn and develop in our lives. The accoutrements really don't mean much in the end if you don't know why you exist in the first place. Of course, this video is intended for career advice, and not meant to as life advice. However, we tend to put far too much emphasis and value on identifying as our careers, instead of the other way round.

I’m. a Professional Engineer with 25 years experience. It’s easy to stand out and make yourself invaluable. Show up, have a good work ethic, keep learning new things, and take on that project no one in the office wants to do. There is always a project that your coworkers will see as too much effort, boring, or beneath them - do that one. Your boss will be grateful and you will become the “I need it done I ask her”. This is valuable.

Agree about not following your passion. So Good They Can't Ignore You is the book I read that convinced me: Newport wrote that we can develop passion in the areas that we're skillful in, rather than develop skills in areas we're passionate about. Skills are the master, passion the slave, not the inverse.

I met a young plumber recently, a journeyman and he makes $2K a week, no student debt. He had no college degree and is better off than most young grads I do know. Jus' sayin...

I know this advice is for students, but as a 35 year old with a lost soul, I find it very useful as well

Excellent video. All great tips, but I have to disagree a bit with the balance one. I get the point of what he is saying (strive to be the best and don't be "balanced" just because someone says you have to be) but to say that losing your first marriage and losing your hair (lol) was"worth it" to get where is today gives a mixed signal in my opinion. No judgement on him or anyone else, but I personally would not say that losing a marriage, becoming miserable, or losing your health is worth it to be the best you can be professionally. Obviously he is doing really well now so maybe it was all worth it in the end for him, but that one piece of advice doesn't sit well with me. Other than that, all of the points were great and loved the wig at the end!
