Professor Sharon Abrahams, Personal Chair in Neuropsychology, delivers her inaugural lecture entitled Mind Matters in Motor Neurone Disease.
In this lecture, Prof. Abrahams discusses her work with people living with a degenerative disease and in particular motor neurone disease.
This disease was commonly thought to affect the system controlling movement exclusively, but Prof. Abrahams' work has contributed to demonstrating that the mind matters in motor neurone disease and that a large number of people will experience changes in cognition and behaviour in addition to progressive physical disability.

Really interesting and informative, great speaker. Prof Abrahams talking about the behaviour changes seen in MND / ALS patients with frontotemporal dementia (disinhibition, apathy, loss of empathy, difficulty planning, changes in eating). She talks about using fMRI with verbal tests to look at differences in cognition, and the apathy scale which her team developed.

Yes, Prof Sharon Abrahams. I could not agree with you more. "Mind over matter is the key to living with this terminal illness MND" I have been diagnosed in 1978. 43 years ago. I have received no medical treatment whatsoever for this disease. He has completely taken away the use of my arms and hands. But I have become a happy old person and I'm no longer scared of this terminal illness. Mind over matter and acceptance of one's condition. That's what has taken me to where I am today.
