It's the circle of construction, engineers hate architects, builders hate engineers and architects hate builders? Anyway as a professional civil engineer for 10 years I worked with a lot of builders, and the one thing I learned in that time is that they hate us- and we probably also give them some stick that isn't justified too... So, when Builder Simulator released a demo for Steam NextFest, it seemed like something I should play to try and learn why builders hate engineers so much and perhaps learn a new respect for my builder companions...

About Builder Simulator:
Builder Simulator is a game for those, whose biggest dream always was to construct your own house from scratch. Prepare your plan, buy needed materials, and build a perfect residence brick by brick. Will it be an easy task? At first, yes! After all, you’re just a rookie in this serious building industry. A specially made tutorial will guide you step by step through the twists and turns of construction work. However, the more experience you get, the more demanding the challenges become.
Design
Every big construction project starts with a pencil and a piece of paper. And so, it is in the Builder Simulator. You’ll start your work by designing a house on a drawing board. Lines, curves, squares - the whole layout is up to your taste. The only thing that can hold you back is your own imagination. So use this head of yours and draw the most excellent building of it all! And if you don't have an idea for a design, you can always choose one of the projects we have prepared.
Build
Have you finished your little design? Good! Now it’s time to put it into practice. Grab a bunch of bricks, take some cement, roll up your sleeves, and build, construct, create! Are you afraid it’ll be boring? No, no, no. Nothing like that! You’ll dig the foundation, erect walls, insert windows or doors, and many more. It will not only be exciting, but above all, it will be fun!
Finish
You’re very proud of those straight walls and perfect roof… but it’s not over! It’s time to finish this pretty, little house. How? Of course, by polishing its exterior! It’s like putting makeup on a perfectly sculpted face. You can finish the elevation, do the floor or paint walls. Do everything you can to make this house splendid!

I went to school for engineering. Took a summer internship doing construction. Gained a ton of respect from the trade guys for doing that. Even if I didn't end up doing engineering for that specific field, they were like "At least we'll know there's one engineer out there who actually understands what it's like to have to implement their designs"

@@SunlightonMoon just like what matt said in the video: architects usually come up with the overall design for the client, the engineers translate that design to something that can actually be built and for it to be structurally sound and safe. so in a way, engineers still have a say in the design process. so prolly in the eyes of a builder, the engineer just as likely had 'designed' the structure as the architect

@@SunlightonMoon Architects will do the design, how they want it to look, etc. Engineers have to figure out how to make the design work, and also have to do things like wiring design, fire alarms, etc. Then the builders/contractors have to actually put it all together.

@@seanlouisoliveros414 yes, it's the engineer who tells us exactly what materials to use and how to assemble them, so the guys building it don't really have any interaction with the architect and their crayons, unless it's a matter of cosmetics.

One company I worked for, we hired a new sheet metal company to do the hvac, roof, etc, and the guy was an hvac engineer who realized that he needed to understand the real world, and so he started his company to get a few years of practical experience, so he could be a better engineer when he felt he was ready to switch back. The first job we worked with him on was a school, and it was fun hearing him cuss out the stupid engineers who had designed it, as he discovered why text book designs don't work well in real life! He was good at the work, so we had him back on a lot of future jobs, and I suspect that he became a great engineer that the builders would appreciate!

You getting stuck in the roof is about the most engineer thing possible. They can design the most complex of things, but somehow find themselves in a predicament on the job site.

I do ground remediation and stabilisation, and often demo with removing foundations/old piles, the engineer comes along to survey it, and shoot the old piles, and I just watch in disbelief of how they decide they’re getting around the area

Engineers get annoyed by Architects because they have to make "pretty" and unusal buildings actually work in the real world without falling down. Buildes get annoyed by Engineers because they often haven't thought about the logistics of actually putting something together.

When I worked as a rebar detailer there were several times where we had to call our customer (the builder), and they in turn had to get confirmation for us to change something. Several times I was detailing some concrete columns, and because of the size of the rebar, and the configuration specified, it left almost no room for concrete. So they either would need to change the reinforcement, or the size of the column. Real pain when you the builder is screaming at you saying they need a rebar delivery the next day.

I am in an builder internship at the moment and yes you can drill in hollow blocks but only from the side if you do it from the top the block will break

It's odd, I've seen several houses being built on RU-vid videos, and some irl to, and basic non in my area use bricks, or these (11:09) metal things. they all use ply wood, wood beams, and generally look like they don't use real brick

@j Walster Not sure where you live, but the house in this game looked very typical of what you'd see in the UK - all the walls in my house, including the internal walls are made from brick - but lots of houses have the partition walls like at that part too, and I believe like RCE said the forms will generally be made out of wood 🤔. I think colder climates generally have lots of brick houses 😅

The "plasticie material" is called MetSec. It's used on pretty much every building site except from residential properties, with exception to loft conversions, and it's pretty robust stuff. Plaster board screws straight to it and it has a perfect gap for insulation material 👍

Watching this channel as an architects is hella funny, and i often agree on what is "architect" and what is "engineer" haha. Tons of respect for engineers anyway, in my experience the most incredible professionists i met are engineers that can think like architects or the other way around

The fact that the first home was dug out for embedment only is very triggering for me. What about your flood protecion? Those beams were what, 10 to 12 inches? You need at least a depth of 26 inches. I am glad you at least used rebar and not tendons. Stand semi-proud my fellow, im inspecting your work through and through.

@@johnforrestboone1 it was a pretty small home, i use the IRC code where im at and "technically" a home that small wouldnt really require a secondary exit so long as each room has an openable egress window of at least 5 sqft on the first floor.

It does, in the gulf coast region, we require a minimum 10" slab exposure above grade depending on the code you build with, in this case IRC. 10" wont save you from an actual flood but its more to protect against the downward flow of water.

@@codycopeland7527 heard from a guy who worked as a chief builder that he once saw a in construction building that was clearly out of square, like, by half a meter, and when he told the engineer she flipped out saying it was right and following the blueprint. After a lot of convincing she finally ordered a check with a plumb bob. As I said, the building was off by half a meter. Said engineer still refused to admit she was wrong.

Working on a very old very high stone building in the Yorkshire Dales. We were creating stairs running up the inside of a broad square stairwell/atrium with five separate landings to catch all the weird and wonderful different floor levels in what was mostly a three story building. The building had been extended in various directions at various times meaning that nothing was level with anything else. We sacked three architects on that job as they variously designed staircases which failed to match with the passages leading off, or landings which were dangerously small, and in one case passed into the roof space so that there was a purlin right across the stairs roughly two feet above a stair. We (A team of three joiners including myself) ended up designing and building the staircase ourselves. It was certainly a head scratcher, but the oak staircase looked stunning by the time time we were done, and wasn't lethal.

The thought of all that weight on that roof. I live in Yorkshire. We often use Yorkshire stone slates which are much thicker than blue slate. To cope with the weight the roofs are built very shallow to keep the area down. Much easier on the knees and ankles to work on too.

@@FakeGuthix01 Depends on the building. I live in michigan and all the factories here still use flat roofs. homes can too but most are not built to handle the load however you can still get away with nearly flat roofs which allows you to do roofing work without a harness.

Concrete has aggregates in it (small rocks). Without it the aggregate it is just sand cement mix. This is what happens when engineers get out of the office

I imagine the lack of overlap on the roof tiles would be the result of the builders either failing to install it or the engineer failing to give the builders accurate information. The architect’s job would be to say “have this kind of tiling for the roof” then it’s up to the engineer to figure out the best way to do that, and then builder’s job to build it.

Never have I ever added sand to concrete in construction. Unless I’m making mortar. Mortar is sand lime and porcelain cement.

There are screws that work with hollow bricks. We call them turbo screws here. Really long ones. We usually use thise for windows and doors. And a lot of foam :D

In the uk partions walls use those metals profiles nowadays (not every where buy majority) they just screw in to floor/ceiling then the verticals get cliped in with tabs then screwed to secure

In the process of turning an idea I to reality, every person responsible for a little more of that transition hates the people who came before them for not understanding the difficulty of their job. An architect draws a funny shape, the engineer figures out how to make it work on paper, but forgets that people have to assemble it somehow. It's jot until the builder or tradesman looks at the plans to make it, that the engineer's plans arent quite enough. Then they have to send it back to the engineer to get corrected and re-approved. The most hated person though is the final customer who keeps changing their minds mid project so no one is on the same page.

As an individual' who was an engineering Major (I dropped out due to finances), and now works blue collar. The issue we have with engineers isn't personal at all, just a decent amount of engineers think they're never wrong, and are typically clueless while on line or site. Very often we have ended up with engineers yelling at us that we're wrong, when the build sheet they gave us is just incorrect. Also they just don't pay attention to the dangers surrounding them, so you gotta essentially hold their hand so they don't get run over by a forklifts, put themselves under a suspended load, get hit by a massive hanging truck frame, etc, etc. That being said, when you have an engineer who cares and listen to your input and even asks for advice or opinions it's the greatest.

The engineers conceptualize it and the builders sort out the practical bits!😁 for instance my grandpa is a retired USFS worker and one time he was doing a job and he asked where the engineer wanted the dirt (they were flattening an area) and the engineer told him where to put it BUT my grandpa warned him it wasn't a good spot but the young engineer said it was all right, So he piled it up and sure enough the pile blocked a lot of the site! From then on that engineer had a lot more respect for the builders on the job expertise👍

When I started as an Electronics Engineer both the other engineers and the technical people putting stuff together were pleased when I started popping down to the production area and asking them about stuff when I said "I was going to put this new module here, and it is a bit tight but can you put it together OK?" and "I have to write a process for how to do this, how would you actually choose to do it?" then I just omit the 'go out for a fag now' (that means smoke/ciggy to non-brits) and put something like ;wait 5 minutes for readings to accumulate and stabilise'. One of my proudest accolades post-graduations is the people who put stuff together telling me my soldering work isn't bad (normally if you see an Elec Eng with a solder iron things will be bad for all soon).

i mean , at least here in greece is illegal to mix concrete on site , and even if it wasnt the regulations on the water to cemment ratio and the amount of fines allowed in the cemment are tight enough to make it nearly imposible to mix it on site properly if you dont do a proper analysis on the agregate, also here most concrete is a CEM ii C20/25 - C30/37 and to be pumped so you need 300 kgs of gravel and 330 of cement per m^2 so it might be diffrent per type of concrete

Depends on the job as to what we use for partitions majority of residential is wood but most industrial/commercial is aluminium channel, also screwing into concrete floor? Usually use a shot fire for that to drive in floor anchors. 😂

Believe it or not we do actually use those metal things for plaster boarding and the main plasterboard company, gypsum, only guarantee their stuff on it as they claim that movement in timber can cause damage

My dad was a builder/construction worker for a while and didn't have a lot of respect for the engineers. They thought they knew better than everyone and were very protective and stubborn about their plans. Communication was always one way, downward. Engineers wouldn't have a lot of respect or care in how the building would actually be built. Some even intentionally made the job harder to complete on purpose because they were in a position of authority over others. Generally though the doers will find the fault in every plan and the engineers wouldn't communicate. My father's co-workers didn't understand why an engineer was paid so much more than them.

Aliminium profiles. Even (formerly) BPB owned companies make Aluminium profiles for plasterboard walls.

Ooh, another game! Will it be one that is added to my wishlist, only time will tell. ---- Bill Durr? Hmm, I quite like having the robots have proper names. I'm guessing the robot in charge is named Lee Durr, if we're going to use some of my ol' nemesis names from all those Carmen Sandiego games. ---- They make screws specifically to secure into blocks, those door and window ones are probably those. The only one that made me take pause was the bottom one on the window that seemed to go into the mortar joint, which gives me pause.

3:48 it is hard on the machine to start the motor under load. you want to get it rotating before you put much weight into it.
