Marcelito was abandoned and lived on the streets from the age of 7, he speaks limited English and no Italian so this is even more amazing. He listens to songs and learns them. Celine is one of his favourite artists, listen to him sing The Power of Love. He can also sing in Spanish, French and Chinese. He is self taught and didn't have training. Sometimes he sings solely as a male, Sometimes solely as a female other times he sings duets by himself. He is amazing and very humble. Your analysis was great to listen to and your face was a picture.

First time I heard it, years ago, my favorite was the first sound out of his mouth, I was not expecting that! Also, the first switch to baritone, wow! After that, I couldn't help but think he was going to use the wrong voice at the wrong time, but he never did! Great reaction, Peter, thanks!

His natural speaking voice is far more Austin Brown than Adam Chance or Tim Foust (I'm a fan of acapella). That's why I was surprised at his baritone range. His Celine imitation is so much more feminine or light sounding (not sure of exactly why) than any other male head voice or falsetto I've ever heard, I'd like to know how he creates that quality.

Peter, you gave him the highest compliment when you said he must have gotten a lot of training because he was mostly self-taught.

Welcome to the world of Marcelito. I won't repeat his extremely difficult childhood but at age 7 he started to teach himself to sing to comfort himself when he was alone and afraid. His first audiences were the chickens in the coops that he cleaned to survive. Marcelito has never had any vocal or musical training and is completely self taught. He sings all genres of music and in 6 languages and adapts his voice according to the song. In spite of his horrific childhood, Marcelito remained kind, gentle and humble. He has a charity that he is hands on with that tends to the poor and vulnerable populations of The Philipines. He truly is a man to be admired.

I’ve seen and heard Marcelito in person. He was born with his vocal expertise. He was left alone on the street when he was still in diapers. It’s true. He somehow found a way to survive. He is now a millionaire, performing all over the world. He has opened a school for orphan children in the Philppines. He is an angel. He is married and has one daughter. He is a beautiful human being.❤️

Marcelito spent a fair amount of his early life living on the streets...taught himself to sing. Folks in the Philipines rarely have vocal training.

Yeah, it can be heard. As much as talented he is, we can hear that he's good at imitating singers so he learnt to sing like the ones he adored as a fan. That's why for example in "Power Of Love" he's trying to imitate Celione Dion. I bet if he knew or liked the original of Jennifer Rush, he probably would have tried to sound like Jennifer Rush. It's not bad of course, rather an observation.

Marcelito is a Philippino whose native language is Tagalog, yet he impersonated Celine's and Andrea's voices, in her French-tinged English and his Italian, meticulously. I describe his talent in this way: he has a completely unique memory that allows him to capture every nuance that he hears and then his versatile voice allows him to reproduce it accurately. That explains his unusual ability to create a purely female voice. He recreates many other famous female voices as well as Celine's. I'm 85 and I have heard no other male singer that can actually produce that precise sound. Once again your technical expertise caused you to miss what Marcelito did in this performance. I get that your job is "picking things apart", but his unique ability, not perfection, was the point. Just to lighten up a bit, what most people don't know is, that strange thing that he does with his mouth after the song is because the Sound Engineers were teasing him about having a 'female voice' so he was 'removing' it.

I have heard this RU-vid and when he sang it on the talent show in the U.S. He taught himself to sing by listening to songs being played in businesses while he was standing outside and taught himself to imitate what he heard. He didn’t know what the words meant when singing in a language other than his native tongue. I do believe that he speaks English now.

"I'm sure he's got a lot of training" It depends what you call training. He had a very difficult early life, including a period of homelessness. As he grew up he taught himself to mimic all his favorite singers as a passtime. So he's primarily self taught. I'm sure someone else will go into more detail (I'm just not feeling like paraphrasing a bunch of wikipedia at the moment) on his early life and difficulties. But I mean, at the end of the day he practiced a LOT, and that is what really matters. You can have the best teacher on earth, but if you never put the time in to learn, you won't be any better than someone learning on their own through pure practice.

So if you think he sounded breathier on the Bocelli parts then that's how Bocelli sounded on the recording Marcelito was working from. I once saw him mimic Michael Jackson sounding exactly like him complete with all the dance moves. You might also want to check him out singing Despacito in Spanish, another language he doesn't actually speak.

Watching on the Wish Bus with some of his friends watching him outside the Sound Engineers would tease him about his female voice so at the end of the song he does a movement with his mouth like coughing so that he his spitting out the female voice from his body. The smile on his face is so contagious and genuine, he loves singing. He appeared on AGT Champions show 2020 coming in 4th which was a total injustice. { you should watch his performances on that show- Power Of Love, Beauty & the Beast, Time to say Goodbybe .He his married with two daughters now. One of the most incisive and technically-laden analyses of Marcelito Pomoy's rendition of "The Prayer". Thank you Peter ("the Patron Saint of Music"). As a former member of choirs, I've learned a lot from your comments. By-the-way, I heard that Marcelito's singing ability is self-taught; self-developed. He was born very poor and as I heard and read, he received only an elementary or grade school education. Like many Filipino singers, he probably honed his (GOD-given, awesome) singing talent by listening to many types of music, mimicking great singers, and practicing (or just singing) for endless hours. Filipinos love to sing. . .

If I remember correctly, he was participating in a singing contest, but had gotten a bit sick in a way that he couldn’t sing normally. When I first heard it I didn't recognize the Bocelli in Pomoy's way of singing at first. Even sounded a bit more like Josh Groban at times. Relistening both to old duet between Bocelli and Celine and the newer one (old one the one he most likely used as reference) I must say Pomoy definitely did changes. As in skipping the runs and almost whisper moments that the duo put in themselves making their version of the song. I actually like Pomoy's take on Bocelli more than Bocelli did himself.

Aside from the astounding vocals, what amazes me is that neither English or Italian is his native language. I heard another reactor (Italian) say that his pronunciation was good. That he obviously had taught himself to sing the Italian sections because he skipped a portion of a phrase. When he was on America's Got Talent, his wife spoke for him, his English was very rudimentary at the time. Thanx for reacting to this one, Peter, I always enjoy your work!

He does sound to me as a countertenor. This would explain why, I think he sounds better in the higher range. But his tenor sound is beautiful too. His higher range is magical as his vibrato just sails away happily away at the end there. He is crystal clear & bright in that higher range. You are the only reaction that caught the subtle slight squeeze in the lower range - you are good.

Agreed. Sounds like a true countertenor.

Watch his face when he sings both parts. His facial expressions get softer when he sings Celines part. It's very subtle but you can see it. Oh yes, he is self taught. My favorite part was when he changed voices the first time you heard it. Oh yes, the expression on your face was priceless.

Marcelito has no vocal coach, but he is so smart, to handle the two voice in one song, if you close your eyes and listen to his song the prayer, you can say thats duet with two, but actually only Marcelito singing alone,

Hi Peter. I found Marcelito on RU-vid late in 2019. I watched many reaction videos. He has other tracks on RU-vid, like The Power of Love (sung high throughout--beautiful). He showed up on America's Got Talent-The Champions in January of 2020 (he won Philippines Got Talent in 2011). One of the songs he sang there was Time to Say Goodbye, by Sarah Brightman and Andrea Bocelli. Ach. I watched many reactions videos. Someone mentioned another interesting singer, Dimash. It was then that I found the land of Chinese singers, and eventually Korean singers. Such talent in Asia! I have spent many hours listening to them and singing along. Zhou Shen, Hua Chenyu, Jason Zhang Jie, Ayunga, Zheng Yunlong (check out Supervocal 2018), Henry Lau, Hacken Lee (Li Keqin), Wu Qing-feng, and in South Korea, Forestella, HPresso, Choi Jaerim, Michael K. Lee.

Can you take a gander at his AGT performance of "Time to Say Goodbye". In this case, both "voices" are "operatic". His "female" voice in this song is totally different from his emulation of Celine. I always want your take when anything operatic is presented. At his core, Marcelito is an impressionist. He does a cover of "You Raise Me Up" by Josh Groban where I'm hard pressed to discern the difference. Thanks.

I recommend you a Spanish singer her name is Diana Navarro with the song "El perdon". She is very versatile and sings different musical styles with a very particular voice and incredible melismas. She always transmits. She also sings in other languages. The truth is that she is a very complete singer. Greetings.
