After the 2023 winter storms , many Auckland Norway rats were flooded out of their subterranean homes and entered houses looking for food . They are very good at swimming through pipes, gnawing through PVC and wood and and collapsing their skeletons to squeeze through tiny holes

I live in Whanganui and have had a rat come up the toilet. This happened when the drain was blocked. I just shut the door and it went back down the toilet.

I lived in the country and saw Rats larger than a kitten, and a few times the size of a cat, i thought they were the same breed until i listened to this story. The section next door was used to grow vegetables, it wasn't often but you would see them scurrying into the drains, i think that would be the norway rat. One summer they started climbing into our trees, we had native birds and they were important to protect. I now know that type was the ship rat, the breed that hides in the canopy.
