This video explains the basics of profile and pocket toolpaths (or tool paths).
I've had many people tell me they were confused about pocket and profile toolpaths. I made this video to give you a general idea of what the difference is and how they work. For the absolute beginner, it can be confusing.
This video will give you an overview of the differences.
A NOTE: Profile is the same as contour (how it is stated in Carbide Create)
you will use both of these very often. In fact, they will be the most common features you will use. So understanding them is very important.
Subscribe and search this channel for deep-dive explanations since, as of this publishing date, I have not made videos yet.

Thanks. This video helped me figure out why my pocket cut was not working. The “remove” bit button helped me understand why the tool path was trying to use multiple bit.

Garrett, Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Continuing to enjoy the VCarve learning. I have downloaded the VCarve Trial software to apply what I am learning even though I have not purchased a CNC yet.

Keith, of course! VCarve can be a little tricky at first, but keep practicing with the trial software and by the time you order your CNC you'll be a pro and can hit the ground running!

Thanks again Garrett for another short but informative video on the difference between pocket/profile cuts. You’re making it easier for my “bee-in-a-boxcar” brain to understand the Vcarve program. Although I’m familiar with Mach 3, it would be nice if you would do a few short videos on Mach 3 (i.e., tips/tricks).

Hey Roger. how's it going? I would have to purchase that software but I think it's important to start training others on it as well. So looks like it goes on my purchase list. Please give me a bit of time (hope you'll forgive me for the delay)

I am a beginner and I’m trying to cut a 24 mm circle. I used the profile cut because I wanted to remove the inner material as a “disc” instead of the pocket method. I figured it was less mess and wear on my bit. The hole is what I wanted to be 24 mm not the disc. I set it to run inside the line, then on the line. No matter where I ran the tool path, I couldn’t get a 24 mm hole. It was 2 mm off . Do I have to use the pocket cut to creat a hole in order to get the inside diameter that I want? Thank you for the videos, They are helpful
@IDCWoodcraft
@IDCWoodcraft 3 года назад
Hi Country boy! 2mm is pretty significant. You may want to look into the stepper motor settings. Unfortunately, I can't help with that (yet). However, you are not out of luck for being able to solve this right now. Check out these 2 videos. They answer how to fix this problem. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-G0N7Nm3wbfU.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-e7xMpL-0F_A.html

Thank you! So, the profile always cuts out side the line, never centered on it? If a larger bit is used to make the pocket faster, like cutting several circles of the same, could you just finish off the cycle with a small end mill and use the opposite operation? In a square or any cut with a sharp angle, the bit will always leave a small ‘rounded’ area at the vector intercept in a pocket cut, so do you always go back and do a finish cut with a very small end mill to ‘clean up’ that rounded intercept? Do it manually with a knife or chisel? 😬. I’ll buy you a coffee for this answer!
@IDCWoodcraft
@IDCWoodcraft 2 года назад
hi Paul. Profile will follow a line...on it, beside it or any distance from it. It will still follow a line. You just tell the software where to follow. The bit follows a slight arc on the corners but it will leave a sharp corner on the cut. It's the way the software moves the bit that is misleading you on this.

Great video again Garrett. Do you happen to know if vcrave has a offline program? For practice purposes and file transfers?
@IDCWoodcraft
@IDCWoodcraft 3 года назад
I just made a video to answer both questions. To answer them here...vcarve is stand-alone. You buy it and it's yours. No internet required or attachment to the software owner. The second is you can create and export/import SVG, PDF and DXF. I'll post the video tomorrow

So, how about raster for speed, then offset for nice finish/second pass at the final pocket edge? 😬
@IDCWoodcraft
@IDCWoodcraft 2 года назад
Yes, you can definitely do that. I raster all the time and talk about it in several videos for the reason you stated.

Good afternoon oh masterful one!! Question - Why does my VCarve Pro keep adding Toolpaths when I preview a given tool path?? Got one project now with 8 tool paths and if I select preview all, it tells me that 5 or 6 of the paths are blank. Got me frustrated!
@IDCWoodcraft
@IDCWoodcraft 3 года назад
Hi JP. That's likely because you altered the drawing after the toolpaths were made. what was once drawn was deleted but the toolpath still exists. Go into each toolpath and make sure there are selected vectors for that toolpath.
@martymitchell9855
@martymitchell9855 2 года назад
On the pocket cut, assuming you wanted a small circle centered inside the larger circle that wouldn't be cut out, how would I do that? In essence you'd have a raised (uncut) "island" inside the larger circle.
@IDCWoodcraft
@IDCWoodcraft 2 года назад
Hi Marty. Just create a second toolpath with a different depth. That'll get what you want
@omsingharjit

Can we say that profile cut is just router following ( cutting ) outside line . Engraving test is also profile cut or not ?
@IDCWoodcraft
@IDCWoodcraft 2 месяца назад
omsingharjit, Yes, in profile cutting, the router follows the outside line of the design. Engraving is a different process as it involves cutting into the material to create designs or text, so it's not considered a profile cut. Hope that helps clear some things up for you my friend.

When I try drawing a square then cutting it with the pocket tool path, it seems like it just follows the outer lines like the profile tool path. What am I doing wrong?

Brian, be sure to have a closed vector and a deep enough depth of cut for your pocket toolpath. If you are still having issues, send me a screenshot to garrett@idcwoodcraft.com
