Ari -- it might sound the same, but there is a difference. High-speed flash sync is where the flash pulse is emitted as a rapid train of pulsed light so that you can use high shutter speeds like 1/2000th. With Freeze Mode, it is still a single pulse, but the width of the pulse is shortened to prevent subject blur with movement. Hi, new viewer here. Just thinking, in the studio, does it make sense to use HSS for studio flashes or speedlights without freeze mode or short duration? Thanks in advance for the answer.
Hi there -- I can't think of a way that HSS would make sense in the studio. When you have a photo session outside, then you deal with two exposures: the ambient light, and the flash. Then HSS makes sense because you need the faster shutter speed for either, (1) shallow depth of field, or (2) high shutter speed to freeze action. In the studio however, you generally don't deal with the ambient light since the ambient is severely under-exposed in the studio so that only the light from the flash counts. Then the short flash duration will freeze the action. The shutter speed doesn't come into play.
Camera settings: 1/250th @ f/8 @ 125 ISO Even though the Sony A1 can sync up to 1/400th with the proper strobe, I always keep below maximum flash sync speed in the studio. I do this because there's the risk of getting the edge of a shutter curtain, and a black band showing on the edge of the frame. And you are entirely correct that I could have made my life easier by locking off on a tripod. I nearly always do for product photography, but rarely do for portraits. And I guess I was stuck in that "portrait / headshot" way of shooting.
Neil hi This is a question unrelated to the video. In an outdoor party , reception situation, what wld be your camera settings and flash settings, setup. I have tried many combinations but just haven’t hit on that ‘gotcha’ combo. Thanks William
