#Omega #OmegaSpeedmaster #Calibre321
In this video we present you the history of the iconic Calibre 321 of Omega. The two new Speedmaster (steel and platinum) will be presented in two separate videos. This column-wheel chronograph calibre was the first one to be used by Omega when the Speedmaster was introduced in 1957 and it was the calibre American astronauts flew to the moon and wore on the moon. We all know that the Speedmaster ist the legendary #Moonwatch
I want to thank Gregory Kissling, Head of Product Developement, and his charming team for having provided us with all the interesting material.
The Omega Calibre 321 was a robust and elegant chronograph calibre. Today it is highly sought-after by watch collectors around the world. Now, more than 50 years after the last Calibre 321 was produced, Omega is bringing the iconic calibre back.
Known for its beautifully intricate design, the original Calibre 321 was the first movement ever used in the Omega Speedmaster in 1957. It had, in fact, been previously used in some of Omega's other chronographs, namely those in the Seamaster collection. It stands out for its use of a monobloc column-wheel, a feature that is machined from a single piece and which adds technical value. Generally, column-wheel movements require very careful precision in design and build, making them popular with watch collectors.
In addition to its construction, the original Calibre 321 also earned a very notable place in history. It was used in a variety of models including the Speedmaster ST 105.003 (the model first tested and qualified by #NASA and worn by astronaut Ed White during the first American spacewalk) and the Speedmaster ST 105.012 (the first watch worn on the moon).
Reintroducing a movement with such an important reputation must therefore be done with the utmost exactness. For the Calibre 321 project, Omega utilised a dedicated team of experts who worked efficiently over two years and in total secrecy to bring the movement to life. The small group was composed of researchers, developers and historians, as well as the finest craftsmen and experienced watchmakers. To protect the project’s exclusive details, the team even worked under the codename “Alaska 11”, in line with the names that Omega used for its secret Speedmaster designs for NASA in the 1960s and 70s.
Using the 2nd generation Calibre 321 as a reference, the Omega team compiled extensive historical research and original plans to reconstruct the movement as accurately as possible. Going even further, they also used “tomography” technology (digital scanning method) to see inside the true Speedmaster ST 105.003 timepiece that astronaut Eugene “Gene” Cernan wore on the moon during the Apollo 17 mission in 1972. Cernan was the last man to walk on the lunar surface and his Speedmaster is now housed at the Omega Museum in Bienne. Its Calibre 321 provided the perfect design criteria for Omega to follow.
As a result, even the most unique and iconic parts of the Calibre 321 have been reborn in respect to their authentic specifications. The movement wonderfully corresponds to the “moon period” of Omega’s history, with a construction that completely respects the designs from the past.

The 861 had more parts than the 1861, so the differences aren't only in the copper coating compared to the radium coating, that's for sure. In 861, several levers (dial side) are split with additional screws to attach them rather than single block construction of several levers on the 1861 movement, so I could say the 1861 movement is more rigid than the 861.

Thanks for your work here. I know it's outside of the scope of this program but perhaps in a future show, you could show some details on the latest calibre they're developing for the Speedy. Fantastic video, I really enjoyed and it was great learning the history of this iconic movement and watch! I do have to say, and to no fault of Omega given it's recreating essentially 1940's technology, it's hard to ignore the poor tolerance (by today's contemporary standards) of -1 to 11 seconds a day on a new watch you can buy today. I guess it's same as buying an exact replica of a 1950's car and you learn to love it for all faults and quirks.

Great insights! Didn’t know about the accuracy of -1 / +11, which makes sense, but I would have hoped for a better result. And that it takes 2 days for 1 movement to build let the price doesn’t seem to be from the moon anymore... With regard to production capacity it adds up to max. 920 movements for me. 8 employees, 230 work days (considering 25 days of vacation). What would have been interesting: for how long is Omega planning to produce that caliber...?
@WatchAdvisor
@WatchAdvisor 4 года назад
The accuracy could of course have been improved, but to stay loyal to what it was Omega choose to stick to -1/+11. This entire project is based on the principle to be as authentic as possible. There will be approximately 1000 calibres 321 produced and assembled per year. This makes these two Speedmasters to the cherry on the cake 🍰.

Now I can see how the new cal.321 is quite reasonable. Its a very beautiful chronograph mechanism with a very high level of finishing. New question, how is Breguet's Lemania different from Omega's Lemania. Putting the slight disappoint of Breguet moving their production to Lemania, I really want to know Breguet's chronograph. Btw, after reading few comments, it definitely sounds interesting cause Dornbluth is a very traditional family brand.
@watchnerds
@watchnerds 4 года назад
It's the same, though some may have higher frequency or more power reserve, otherwise most of them (the architectural or gear count) is the same. Omega used to have the used the lemania movements in their chronograph even until 70s like the Omega speedy automatic chronometer 125th anniversary, which now used in Breguet type XXI/XX if I recall. I think the one that lemania didn't use on the Breguet watch is only the call 5100 (omega 1045 if I recall, forgot the cal no. ) , which now, made by ETA, rebranded as C01 movement for tissot, Mido, and several other low mid brands of swatchgroup.

Besides what we have been showing in this video with the lineup of all the iconic Speedmaster calibres and the 1:1 reedition of the Calibre 321, today all Omega's calibres withstand magnetic fields up to at least 15.000 Gauss. All fully assembled, ready to sell Omega watches must pass the Master Chronometer certification independently done my METAS, the Federal Institute of Metrology. If you are curious, please click here to download the entire testing procedure: www.metas.ch/metas/en/home/dok/rechtliches/Zertifizierung_Uhren.html When you now compare Omega to any other brand you have to take this under consideration, since I doubt that any competitor today would pass this tough testing procedure. By the way: the testing by METAS is open to any watch manufacturer ...

15:40 Eugene Cernan's NASA-issued 105.003 chronograph (NASA #28) became his lucky charm as he wore it on Gemini IX (June 1966), Apollo 10 (May 1969) and Apollo 17 (December 1972). On Apollo 10 & 17, Cernan always wore this 105.003 on a steel mesh JB Champion bracelet and on the three Apollo 17 lunar EVAs wore it underneath his Apollo A7LB spacesuit, over his left forearm he wore a NASA-issued 105.012-66 (NASA #67) Speedmaster exposed to the dusty & radiation lunar environment of outer space during more than 22 hours ! #MoonwatchUniverse

1:12 on the left quiet large piece of lunar meteorite, probably "Dar-Al-Gani 400" stone-achondrite meteorite ? At such a high retail price, it's probably advisable to get a real 1960s PreMoon caliber 321 Speedmaster like the 105.003 or the 105.012 Moonwatches

Was this same Lemania movement also used by Patek Philippe ? I think so... Let's put costs aside and forget the economics aspect, what are the timekeeping advantages of the column wheel when compared to the cam ? Isn't the column wheel a more noble horological solution when compared with the cam ? Is Patek Philippe reverting to column wheel or cams for their chronographs ? Are identical moonwatches not available to dis-assemble to be able to copy it ? There will definitely be some differences to reduce the costs as modern industry is always too tempted...

I really appreciate in depth videos about the movements and their evolution in time. On the other hand I'm disappointed to hear nothing about the 3861 :(. Finally, am I the only only one who finds the 1861 overhyped? Compared to the 7750 architecture, is there even any advantage?
@WatchAdvisor
@WatchAdvisor 4 года назад
We will later also present the 3861. This would have been too much information for this video... So please stay tuned to discover this calibre later this year. The 1861 is what it is... The hand-wound calibre of the moon watch... The 7750 is an automatic chronograph calibre only. The latter does not mean that it is a less good calibre - in contrary. In my opinion it is by far the best ever manufactured automatic chronograph calibre in such quantities. No other chronograph calibre is as mature and reliable...

@@WatchAdvisor Wow thanks for the reply and looking forward to it :). I think the 3861 will eventually replace all 1861 movements and be part of the new "basic" Speedy generation. It will thus become Omega's new workhorse chronograph movement.

I think Omega has accidentally stumbled on what might be their best marketing move in their recent history... the fact that there are Rolex like wait lists on this watch is a God send for Omega in terms of brand reputation.. they'd be utter fools to flood the market with these and drive the price back down to below MSRP.... because as long as people are paying $22K+ for this already highly priced $14K watch, Omega gets to be a part of a VERY exclusive club along with PP, AP and Rolex... Don't fuck this one up Omega...

I like Omega and the "moon watch" but reason I have never bought one is that the crown is too small and too difficult to wind. Being a Manual-wind" the crown needs to be easily accessible and many people say and do sell their Speedy because of this exact reason... Please Omega, if you stay manual wind, PLEASE make the crown bigger and easier to wind.

@WatchAdvisor
@WatchAdvisor 4 года назад
18.000 A/h or 2,5 Hz was the typical frequency of calibres in the good old times... This has nothing to do with hand-wound or not. Higher oscillating frequencies were introduced for better accuracy and to optimize manufacturing processes...

@@gianpakasa The Tesla analogy is interesting. We could say the watch industry had their high-tech breakthrough back in the 1970s with the introduction of quartz movements - cheap and easy to mass produce, superior levels of accuracy, etc. In the last 20 years you could also just use your phone to get the time. Yet for many people there is still something romantic and fascinating about the old movements - just as a kind of luxury item. Following the car analogy, a mechanical timepiece is maybe like owning a horse? Today riding horses isn't a standard means of travel, it is something done for fun by people with quite a lot of spare money to spare. If you just want to travel from A to B in the most efficient way, everyone (with a few very rare exceptions) will drive a motor vehicle. But still, horses haven't gone away! :-P
