Fun fact oranges are actually relevant to Christmas, during the Great Depression it was considered a treat to get an orange in your stocking, hence y it’s now commonly used as Christmas decor. Don’t know about the banana tho

Hello, German here; Actually those orange ornaments could get a pass because in German and many other European and Germanic cultures citrus fruit, especially mandarins(?) And tangerines, are closely associated with Christmas, way before gifts became a thing. Similarly Turkey and other poultry became very popular Christmas dinners in ye olden times. There's even a fairytale that mentions it. "Das Mädchen mit den Streichhölzern" (the girl with the matchsticks) is the name of it!

Some ppl even hang dried orange slices and cinnamon sticks on their tree. Very oldschool tho, back when fancy ornaments were not a thing, you just got cookies, dried fruit, stars made of hay, bows out of burlap...

dw this guy is just an American, they don't have any culture so they mock European culture :) i was pretty angry when he "roasted" tangerine ornaments too. here in Russia it was very common to put apples, candy and oranges on the Christmas tree because they were also considered a present, and a pretty decent one too, guests could just take a piece of fruit or a candy off the tree and have it. so seeing these ornaments actually warmed my heart, but i guess people will be butthurt about anything these days including ornaments people decorate their own Christmas trees with. smh

Oranges are actually traditional Christmas stocking gifts. Before refrigeration non native fruits were a luxury in Europe. An orange on Christmas was a nice treat for children and something that most families could afford.

I personally like collecting really strange ornaments that wouldn’t go on your “picture perfect” tree, but usually they’re hand-made by either me, a family member, or someone at a local craft fair lol My grandmother has a (presumably) hand-made ornament that is made of plastic canvas and it’s an outhouse, but the door opens and inside is a little bear on the seat with a little roll of toilet paper. I have repeatedly expressed interest in that specific ornament. It’s my favorite ornament I (or any family member) own(s)

That ornament sounds fantastic...My brother and I were given those hallmark ornaments as kids, and 10 years later we got 4 more siblings. They don't want their presents to be hallmark ornaments (expensive lol) but they still wanted them to magically manifest. So I thought each year I would make one for them. So far we have a fancy starbucks frappacino with sprinkles, a diving board and pool, and a vintage video game machine. Your story gives me ideas for next time...

In the UK it's quite common to eat turkey at christmas. The tradition may have came from the thanksgiving christmas tradition in the US, or at least, it was customary to buy an expensive/exotic meat at christmas and turkeys were that in the 1800's for british people, so the turkey ornament makes sense to me.

Also yes turkey is a common sight at Christmas. Especially here in the UK. 76% of households have a turkey as the centrepiece of the table. Not a fan personally however everyone is entitled to do as they so please I can't stop them.

Well actually, here in Canada, it’s a lot more traditional to have turkey on Christmas and chicken or meatloaf on thanksgiving! I had turkey myself this Christmas and it’s always been a tradition for a while, but assuming you are in America it doesn’t really make sense.

Yeah some religions use oranges on Christmas. If some of your family is religious, that might be why you're given oranges? Idk- I was taught about it in my old school because they were hella religious... Strange times

Yeah, they're a really traditional gift in northwestern Europe (though they've largely been replaced by chocolate oranges in the UK)

But yes back in the Victorian era orange's were classed as a luxury so when a child would receive one in their stocking it'd actually be a lovely gift! Though usually it'd be a tangerine I think as they were sweeter :) I know some European countries still do actual oranges though

the thing for me with the la croix one is that you can easily make a la croix ornament out of an empty can. just tie a piece of string on it. I used to work for Target, and I do not miss those days. I have a Seltzer Water ornament. It’s just red and says “Seltzer”. Looks like store-brand Seltzer. I don’t even like Seltzer, I just thought it’d be funny because it’s such a weird ornament. I also have an alcohol ornament because I thought it was funny that you could just buy a tiny fake wine bottle on a string. Again, I do not even like alcohol (maybe it’s because I’m still under 21, but like it smells so bad).

hanging ornaments in an evergreen tree for Christmas is actually an age old way to ward off evil winter spirits, the spirits see a green tree with "fruits" in them and get scared because they think it's summer. So getting fruit ornaments actually makes sense in a way.

Putting fruits on your tree is actually pretty traditional. It's traditional for the English to have turkey for Christmas too, but having a turkey ornament is still strange. I think the Coca-Cola ornament is probably for Coca-Cola collectors. We had an ornament when I was a kid that was a polar bear on skis wearing a Coca-Cola sweater. No idea where it came from, it was just in the box of holiday stuff for as long as I can remember. The sushi one doesn't even look like sushi, it just looks lumpy and bad. Sorry about all your terrible 4 am shifts. Hope you get some respite soon, and have a pleasant holiday season.

@@alexjewitt1039 I looked online and apparently as they mainly eat Turkey on Thanksgiving, they often eat ham or pork for Christmas but I highly doubt it is British ham (don't know about Canadian ham) because that just doesn't sound right

I think that was a tangerine. And tangerines actually are kind of tied to Christmas, in post-ussr countries that is because 1) they were scarce and 2) they were the most tasty during the Christmas season so they would be often bought as a treat
