In my honest opinion, Tosin is hands down the greatest technician on electric guitar today. Every bit as revolutionary as Les Paul, Yngwie, Satriani, Vai and Gilbert were in their days.
Lol ok. Plz explain. U can't just generalize and.not give details..how exactly is tosin every bit as revolutionary as fucking les Paul? Or any of those other guys u mentioned. Because he does slap guitar and plays 8 string guitars??? He plays jazz chords in metal with odd times? That's ALL been done before. So what exactly makes him in the same league as those guys innovation wise? And btw I love Tosin he IS amazing but ur statement is silly
@@andrewarnold9642 Hey, idiot; He meant Les Paul, the actual guitarist, which if you knew anything about guitar you'd probably know what a beast he was in his time. You've just proven to everyone here that your intellect perfectly matches the outlandish and nonsensical statement you made earlier about Tosin being the only guitarist left innovating. Just gtfo before you embarass yourself any further.
This is one of those things that's all skill. In theory, it's not complicated to understand what he's playing or the techniques he's using...but in practice, omfg, this requires so much skill and practice and timing, wow
That’s why I was convinced this was some sort of delay… now I’m just… flabbergasted? Astounded? Befuddled? Nothing quite explains how impressed and confused I am
You just need to tap and thump down and thump up then pluck with index finger then middle finger. The riff is played in groupings of 6 so you need to tap 1 note with left hand and also the 2nd note with the left hand then the 3rd is played by a down thump and the 4th is played with a up thump and the 5 is a index pluck and the 6 is a middle finger pluck. He mostly uses the same shape and just moving around. He plays the root once (tap) then the fifth (tap) then he playes the 9th (thump down, thump up, index pluck, middle finger pluck. So he is playing the 9th 4 times like tremolo picking but it is thumped instead while the 1st and 5th is tapped.
did you know theres is a tosin fan group on facebook of people who quit playing because of him, the more I see his videos the more I think I should join the crew.
I would like to say that this isn't that complicated, but I'd be lying. If you're willing to put in enough hours of repetitive practice, like any other song, it will be easy eventually.
How is Tosin playing Djent? He is an amazing guitarist, better then all these over hyped guitarists like Slash. Is it because he puts some heavy open notes in his song? If so plenty of Metal bands have been doing that for years.
This guys playing and explaining the benefits of a 7th string over a 6th is the first time anyone made it clear for me. What he’s saying makes perfect sense about why to get a 7 or 8 string
No you don't. Look up Tuck Andress. I pulled 30 pages at 6pt.....guitar technique info from his website. The man is a beast. If you can perform an up-down stroke with a pick, you can also do so with thumb. Imagine you are using a pick. When first starting, practice this way: Tuck thumb underneath and in line with index finger. Press through targeted string, coming to rest on string below, reverse action. During early stages of practice, it helps if you learn to perform this action as if it were a movement from the elbow. As you get comfortable with this, relax and allow freedom in to the movement. I used to curse my thumbs. It was my thinking that was wrong, not my thumbs. I repeat...."look up TUCK ANDRESS". He performs the seemingly impossible and ridiculous completely spontaneously. 100% improvised music. Good luck mate.
I can do that actually ;P double jointed thumb I think. Not entirely sure, I just know I can do it cause in school i'll joke around and say I broke my thumb. I think it's called a hitch-hiker's thumb.
I feel it's easier on bass than regular guitar. Bass strings are thicker and more widely spaced, so you don't have to be AS surgically accurate with the right hand.
I tried to learn to play this a year ago, but I just couldn't get anywhere with it. Now I'm back with nearly all of Victor Wooten and Les Claypool's techniques in my arsenal.
once again. He is so djent he has a noise gate on his voice.. I would like to know people doing this. Do you do it with nails or just fingers? My fingers seem to stutter on the strings if you know what I mean I am not entirely sure what that word means because I am not native english speaker but I guess you can figure it out :D
I'm a bassist that uses this technique, and i tend to use the side of my nail, and the bony joint of my thumb. You want a lot of flesh on the string and not just get the pick sound your nails provide so just try as much as you can to use that bone to kind of hit the string.
It's like classical tremolo, but using your thumb...and on the bass strings. I can do tremolo on the classical guitar, but my fingers just don't seem to obey doing this. The skills on display here are just incredible.
That's not a TAM 10. It's his custom shop RG the TAM 10 is based off... meaning it's not so consumer friendly. Note the Rosewood neck and lack of middle pup
If you heard this and tried to learn it by ear only without ever seeing how he played it, you'd be trying to figure it out for the rest of your life. He's so good that he needs extra strings to accommodate his abilities.
This is a really fun lesson! at first it was hard then it got faster and very fun - now i'm hammering on power chords all over the neck and doing the double thumb then 2x pointer / ring finger picks - cool!
Wanna play it ? Just break your thumb and you'll be ready to slap like crazy ! Jokes aside, am I the only one feeling really uncomfortable due to the noise gate on his voice ?
I never intend to quit in my quest to learn. Just watching him play, whether through clinics or live (ruined a headliner for me), absolutely destroys my mind though. Feels like I would need an eternity to catch up/surpass him. Thanks for the advice though.
During the Camping with Animals event at the beginning of the year Tosin spent a lot of time teaching thumping, and someone brought up his hitchhikers thumb. He said that not having one shouldn't affect your ability to thump. Evan Brewer doesn't have a hitchhikers thumb I don't think, and he's the one that taught Tosin how to thump. Good luck with the thumping, man!
Your welcome. It's good, that you actually don't want to quit. Guitar is, in my opinion, the most beautiful and the best instrument in the world. Good luck and lots of fun while mastering this instrument. =)
It barely looks like he's doing anything with his left hand, considering the amount of notes he actually produces. Damn you sir for making this look so easy.
Look up Scott Tennant's Tremolo lesson if you're wanting to work on your right hand thumbing technique. It helps create an idea of how to properly attack the strings.
Dope vid! Gotta learn that. Combine that with my new guitar. I added grooves to my Gibson. New fretboard design. Adds extra x note to pulloffs. It's beast!
