Thanks for the video! I've been putting off doing this on my Honda VTX 1800 all winter. This makes me a little more confident. Probably going to plan the change of oil while I have it open

FINALLY a video that shows us how to do this, thanks man!😎😉

You have to put pressure on the cap when you’re taking it off, or it will pull the bottom threads, when it violently pulls at the threads from the spring pressure.
@rudyjuarez82
@rudyjuarez82 3 года назад
I always test the threads before I put the new spring in, so you’re doing it without spring pressure to feel the threads.

Thanks man. Its good to see the problems that come up and how to get around them. Too many 'how to' vids make everything look easy.

Hi man , I've enjoyed watching your fork springs replacement , as I've just bought those similar progressive suspension heavy duty fork spring kit. The process looks rather easy as long as we've got the right tools , and your report gives me confidence to do it myself. But I am planning on changing the fork oil as well.

Glad it was useful. You should have no problem.

Also before adding the new spring you can put the cap on and twist it till it catches with your hand, no tool. Then just slightly pull up and loosen till it comes off then you can narrow down where the threads "start" then use a wipeable marker to mark on the cap and the fork where the threads start. When you add the new spring and spacer place the cap close to the thread start marks (rotated resting on the top of the loose spring with the cap mark close to the fork mark by sight) and then apply the pressure and spin gently till the threads catch.

Hint jack up bike to reinstall caps. Reduces the pressure of the springs.

Dude, sounds like you are located on the road next to the airport. Obviously you have two cameras, thats good. Try some video editing techniques. Also, a subject plan, script, and video length goals are helpful in making quality videos. Thanks, I enjoyed the video.

you forgot to loosen the pinch bolts in the top tree, start the cap with out the spring so can put alignment marks on cap and forktube, so when starting the threads under pressure you will have a good idea where it will catch the threads inside the tube a sharpie works ok for marking or even a little slice of electrical tape

Hey Is that a 1100 or 1300? I'm trying to determine how long to cut the spacer for my bike.
@NewZonaRides
@NewZonaRides 5 лет назад
Mine is a 1700 but the length to cut the spacer is in the instructions or you can just call them and they can tell you.
@thunderclouddrums1332
@thunderclouddrums1332 11 месяцев назад
The instructions called for 3.75"spacer , too much preload, really stiff ride, so I cut it down in .25" increments and ended up at 3.25", put the fluid at 140mm per the instructions (honda manual called for 135mm which I initially set it at) and now it rides like a dream! also I used a ratcheting wrench and pressed down with my palm with forks fully extended, didn't need as much downforce as my first attempt!

How did you determine how long to cut the spacers??

It's in the instructions.

Hey, You should take the weight off (unspring your forks) that will make it easier
@ut1004bp
@ut1004bp 2 года назад
Boy that chrome really shines on that shiney black finish.. it does look low mileage. The thing about the shorter, but stiffer coil springs is you will no longer notice or hear the spring slap in the fork during deep and quick compression that the longer springs can cause. Did you upgrade your rear shock yet? I'm dropping in a set in my 09 Road Star, it's got 4k miles on it.. and I'm below 140lbs so my load is lighter than yours. Have you thought about adding Emulators or other replacement for improved damping action? ..lol.. I guess we just witness a large Mechanic's tool box theft during this episode!

You don't have to replace fork oil

I believe if you are over 200lbs, you best up your fork oil from 5w to 10w too.
