Is there an app that makes you cringe that you have it installed because of the privacy issues with it? Progressive Web Apps might be a great alternative for you.
Commonly referred to as a "progressive web app," a progressive web application (PWA) is a sort of application software that is provided via the internet and is created using standard web technologies like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and WebAssembly. It is designed to function on any device, including desktop and mobile ones, that has a standards-compliant browser.
A progressive web app does not need to be packaged or distributed separately because it is a form of web application. Users can add the web application to their home screen by simply publishing it online and verifying that it complies with the minimum installation requirements. It is optional to distribute the app through digital stores like the Apple App Store or Google Play.

I started using the Twitter PWA when I moved over to GOS but I didn't realize what it was. My theory is, it's in the web browser so I'm not at risk of increased permissions asking for my contacts, location, etc. I liked this idea so I just kept using it. I also was using some 3rd party apps for other socials but after I thought about it, felt that it was probably worse, as it was a mod/hack of the original app meant to block ads and add features and I couldn't verify any type of privacy policies/practices with it. I think PWA is the way to go, if available.

I agree with you, especially about this "I also was using some 3rd party apps for other socials but after I thought about it, felt that it was probably worse". I'm a big fan of 3rd party apps, but at it's core it means you need to trust that developer and the hacks/workaround they implemented. Not that trusting a big corporation is much better, but to an extent, as far as security goes I think it is. I do wish permissions for PWA's could be controlled on a site by site basis, instead of the overall browser permissions. Separate User Profiles have been the best workaround for this I've found so far.

I decided to use Outlook web app this way, it just felt more secure then grabbing the outlook at from Aurora.

I didn't know Outlook had one, that's pretty handy for a lot of people in the corporate world too. It just feels a little less invasive than using the full-fledged app.

Very promising. Would it be fair to describe a PWA as a 'remote shortcut'? I wonder if they work over, say, the Tor browser.
@sideofburritos
@sideofburritos Год назад
Hmm, maybe more so a browser bookmark. It's more than just pointing to a web page, but it's essentially opening the web page + some other stuff. Just checked, doesn't look like the option exists on the Tor browser exists to add it.

Using instagram as a pwa through firefox. Works well apart from some features.
@sideofburritos
@sideofburritos Год назад
I've noticed some site will leave a few features missing. I think that's their way of nudging you towards downloading the app.

I see that at 6:03 the permission pop-up says “Vanadium”, not “Twitter”. Does this mean the Twitter PWA has the same permissions as the browser? For example, if I grant Vanadium the access to all photos, do all PWAs inherit that permission from Vanadium? I sure hope this isn’t the case and that permissions can be individually controlled on a by-PWA basis.
@sideofburritos
@sideofburritos Год назад
Hmm, this is a good point. The PWA inherits browser permissions. Since it's being launched through the browser, whatever permissions your browser has the PWA will have as well. It would be the same as if you were browsing a site in your mobile browser and a site requested accesses to your photos, and you gave it permission. Some permissions are per site, such as notifications, but photos are app based.

An option would be to install a different browser that you can use strictly for PWA’s and restrict access from it? Would that work, SOB?
@sideofburritos
@sideofburritos Год назад
Ah, that's a good workaround. I feel that the optimal way would be to use a separate user profile for those PWA's that you would want restricted access. Each browser instance in each user profile would have it's own permissions. The downside to multiple browsers in the same profile is that things could get a bit messy having a few installed.

What do you think about firefox browser
@sideofburritos
@sideofburritos Год назад
I prefer chromium based browsers for their security vs FF. Someday I'll make a video on this topic when I figure out how to communicate it without making a ton of people angry 🤓.

I see you have Tidal and Spotify. Which music streaming services do you think is more privacy friendly? I know that Apple Music have only 2 trackers.
@sideofburritos

I was only testing Tidal for a day, I don't have it installed anymore. As far as privacy for music streaming goes, that's still something I want to look into.

Tidals sound is so much better, its genuinely noticeable and allows for convenient streaming of music. I can't comment on privacy, though.

I saw someone respond with this to a similar question "The burden of proof. You can't disprove a negative. So unless you have evidence for backdoor, we can't be conspiratorial about backdoor in every piece of hardware." It's also OSS, so you can look at the code.
