Project 60 Part 2: Removing the 12ht engine

Hey guys!
Back again with Part 2 of Project 60. So in this video we remove the 12H-T engine from the rusty body. Mount it on the engine stand and give it a good clean. Lucky to have my Dad in town this weekend so he was able to give me a hand!
Part 3 will be on the FJ62 as we start prepping it to have the 3F motor removed, so make sure you are subscribed!

You won't need that heating element, 12HT is a great starter, my old one used to fire basically instantly, the joys of direct injection 👌🤙

I just loved this joga-mechanics lesson. What was more difficult, to remove the engine or having that nice nails work done? Maybe it was not being able to ignore Mars. Looking like a beast waiting to be released on four wheel. ¡¡PURA VIDA!!

This was the quickest easiest engine removal I've done, install will be a bit longer due to have to move mounts but all good fun:)

Great work Danie! Definitely don’t need the heating element, they very rarely come on anyway. I can’t remember exactly what the parameters are for them to turn on but it is a ridiculously cold air temp from memory, like around 0. Mines been on a manual switch since I bought my 60 and even in the cold Victorian winters I’ve never needed it. A good restriction to remove and another thing to not need to worry about with the 12V conversion 👍🏻

Just tuned in to your adventure and have to say I found it satisfying. Just the right amount of mechanical information, visual information and of course Mars. I grew up with Blue Heelers and Mars brings back memories. Mars watches all, sees all and just adores you. I would love to see a turbo upgrade, custom log manifold with bigger tubes and a tune. That crack in the manifold, yeah, very common. As for your future I see a custom diesel 4x4 with your own take on it. From there a whole line of merchandise with "Danie Built" T-shirts, stickers, key rings, work gloves, hats and of course hair products, make-up and fashion line. Now all you have to do is teach Mars to work the camera and edit.

PS, you can start them below 0 without the starting element. they do take a little longer to crank and fire but they start pretty well right away

Great video Danie, very structured engine removal, FYI try massaging “barrier cream” into your hands and arms before getting greasy make washing afterwards a lot easier. Good luck with the rest of the renovations.

12HT valve body would more then likely run higher line pressure, so upgrading your valve body to wholesale automatic transmissions nomads OR extreme would help, I run the extreme in my 2016 patrol, was a very lazy gearshift from a factory, was the same in my 2012 patrol, vastly different now, would love to do similar conversion as yours 12HT with 62 body, But onto 80s chassis 😋

Hey Danie, great videos. i have shown my daughter your vids, great alternative to the selfies. i could have done with these a few years ago. i had my 12ht rebuilt and upgraded with bigger turbo and intercooler, but was too much power for the old autos, kept on breaking them, so had to do a manual conversion. now running sweet. good luck with the project. ps the 24v alternator when they go wrong is a nightmare!! Love your work Danie ! I just did front wheel bearings, seals, rotors, calipers, pads and shocks today, 60 series and Toyota’s in general are such a dream to work on! 12ht with a inline pump,it's one of the best engines Toyota bought out. Never worked on one,be good to get me hands on that one were you keep it at night😉😉. Exhaust l would have a crack at welding if you have some experience,nothing to lose making mistakes l have plenty experience at.

Definitely a sturdy old engine:) unfortunately welding them up just causes them to crack in another spot later on so not worth the hassle. Do a new one right the first time:)

I could be wrong look like you might be able to move the motor mounts instead of cutting any off, roothy when he did his swap work through a number of Toyota mounts and found one that worked. Regardless keep up the good work and mar seems to be making a good apprentice moving random things for you.

Yeah did look into moving the bracket on the motor instead of the chassis but moving the chassis mount is an easy enough job and then I have piece of mind that both mounts are where they're supposed to be for the 12ht and its supported in the correct places

The 40s chassis mounts were in the correct spot laterally where the fj62 one mount is all the way towards the front of the petrol engine due to it having extractors

Ive seen vids about stick welding cast iron on YT you get a cast iron electrode and heat up the cast part with a tiger/rosebud torch. I think 90 amps was used? The process is sound, if thats an option for you. ✌😆

Definitely not an option. Even welded professionally they will crack further along the manifold again. Rather build a good one first go and never stress about it again

I feel your pain, just had to put a new turbo in my 1hdt 80. The mechanic found a big crack in the exhaust manifold, couldn't find any replacements from a wrecker, so $750 from Toyota for a new one ! Ended up costing over $3.5k all up, new turbo, manifold and fitting, expensive exercise !

I am interested in a 60 series. In your part 1 you mentioned people are asking way too much money, way over priced. What do you think a good price is for one with 300 k plus? Or even 500 k?

Too many factors come into account. There's a big difference between a well maintained and serviced vehicle and one that's just been held together. Kms don't tell the whole story. Always best to get a full mechanical inspection done before buying any vehicle.

I would much prefer to see you a-la-nat-ur-al than heaps of makeup on.. That large bumper bar makes for a great step and work frame for you Danie.... It must be fun/great having your dad there to help. I wish mine was around. How many of today's cars can you get into the engine bay to work on the motor while it is still in there? this is another reason why I love older vehicles. Great stuff, keep up the great videos.

Good job! About the glow screen on the 12HT, I think it would be best to have it working if you're going to do cold starts. I've seen people run without them, or just giving it 12v without big issues. For me it was clear that it needed it below zero, as my relay went bad. Bummer with the manifold btw, will you make one from scratch? Stock turbo? Do put in a pre turbo egt bung when doing manifold. Keep up the good work!

yes it would still be good to have something if I ever do go down south. Where I am its rarely under 25 degrees for most of the year. yes at this stage making one from scratch. the original turbo will be rebuilt unless i change my mind and change turbos completely which is likely haha

didn't go about anything the hard way. quickest and easiest route was taken. yes so if you watch the video you can see I remove the bellhousing

you don't need heating element working its only there for extreamly cold enviroments and instead of cutting the engine mounts off the chassis and rewelding why not just change the body over to the diesel chassis should be very easy to do with the 2 poster hoist

Discussed in part 1. Only good part of the diesel is the motor. Aka chassis in the fj62 is mint. So 100% worth a quick engine mount swap as opposed to dealing with repairing a rusty chassis

I can just see it now, you will have shops calling you to come on over to remove upper bell housing bolts because of how insanely awful it is to typically reach that area on most vehicles, charge them accordingly !. On another note I was curious what your dads background is in, if he was or is a mechanic or just experience gained working on his own vehicles through the years.

Hello from Paris, Good job done ! You will love this engine the 12ht is so great mine hj61is turning 670000kms and own it since 15 years l would not change for anything. Keep it stock as more as you can , stock turbo put an egt sensor on the manifold to prevent from trouble, check the radiator , a good 3" and as long as you as you live up to 25° you won't use the "heather grill" . Keep going the good job, cheers 😉
