man, that champagne 850 is actually super clean. Try and look for a wrecked 850 turbo instead.

We know! It was painstakingly tough to find a wrecked car with a good engine in the timeframe, but once the swap is done we will try to find a good home for the champagne shell or slowly wait for an opportunity to place something in it as well!

1. I see Miata, should’ve taken that out lol. 2. Gold car looks so clean, perfect daily. Looks like you need a 3rd Volvo for the red car.

dont part it out. junk yard white blocks are your friend. you want the "rn" out of a 2004.5 or newer car. u can have 450hp to the wheels quite easily. 350 is nothing to a rn. @@SlippyGrip

i remember when i had 2 volvos:) now i have 7, and have owned like 13;P watch out!!!! they are addictive to own because they are actually cheap to maintain. u just gotta complete the simple task of a stage 0 tune up, and any update deferred maintenance items. Also i apologize on behalf of Volvo for the p80 dash clunk. its every car.

Haha appreciate the input! Fortunately the p80 dash isn’t my first endeavor, after the gold car purchase, that makes 5! I’d say we both have a problem 😂. Definitely looking forward to getting this all sorted out! Stay tuned for updates!

Because of that you should keep the gold 850 to restore that one aswell, and buy an actual shitter as a donor, sad to see such a nice car become a donor

May be in the plans, finding a crappy donor proved to be much more difficult than anticipated, and everything was many hours away. It just happened to be that the gold car was nearby and in good shape as well.

that's understandable, but hey to make the gold car easier you could just go to a junkyard and get the parts you took from it from a scrapped 850, but of course finding a engine for the gold car would be hard, but it could give a nice opportunity to swap in a totally different engine and make kind of a ''sleeper'' build of the gold 850

damn to be honest I feel like that was a stupid move buying another Volvo 850 turbo because the red one you got is an 850-R version, the R version specifically comes with a stronger more powerful motor with a larger turbo than the Turbo model, I get it to buy the other for parts was smart but you are gonna put a different motor from a GLT Touring model into a R version that was built for performance so you will never get to enjoy what a true Volvo 850-R feels like. I know because my very first car was a 1997 Volvo 850 base model and I stupidly sold it for cheap when I did not know the backround or history that the model had, now after searching for 3-4 years I got myself an 850-R and it is incredile the differences you feel overall. the 850-R has a great history behind it and are absolute monsters with little work done to them plus the 850-R specifically is a pretty rare car, took me 3-4 years to find one for under $5k with decent miles on it because most were beat up or needed alot of work. Cant wait to see how it turns out!

I get where you’re coming from but actually it’s the same motor! The GLT 850 low pressure turbo cars didn’t come till 97, and they were only branded GLT for our market, never turbo. The turbo/t5 cars had the same engine and turbo as the T5R/R, but the T5R/R ECU had higher boost levels, producing that 222-240hp difference we saw. The engines are vin specific, so I absolutely double checked to make sure I was getting the correct car/engine combination before hand! That’s awesome you found an R after searching for some time, I had a base NA 850, a T-5R and then a platinum turbo wagon as well, so the nostalgia hit me too, which is why I picked these two cars for their compatibility to get that red car going well! Hope this helps!

​@SlippyGrip you are absolutely correct. It's the same 850 engine t5/R. Turbo and injectors are different but not the engine itself. Miss my 855R 96 wagon. Black with black interior manual transmission. Had so much fun with that car. The sound of that 5cyl turbo engine is awesome 👌 Greetings from Sweden

Greetings! Interesting you say that, I wonder if maybe there was more differences in our US market compared to the Swedish market? For us, even the turbo, and the injectors are the same, but we did miss out on the M59 transmission. We only had the M56 here, and they were only in the naturally aspirated 850s. They were available in the S/C/V70 for the Us but obviously that was a few years later. Cheers!

sorry to say you are wrong about it being a different motor. the 2.3 hpt is the same until it was revised in 2004. the European version had stronger connecting rods, but some people say thats not true, and its just the better gas enabling the 275hp the euro rs made, but i digress.

the turbos have semantic differences. the t5r has a 16t, the t5 has a 14t. this is the "size" of the inlet on the turbo. they are the same turbo frame but the size of the inducer hole shifts and limits peak efficiency. the 16t can probably make another 40-60hp without becoming inefficient do to heat. @@SlippyGrip

​ @SlippyGrip didn't like you to tear apart such a good car, I really think these cars are not available anymore so the ones in good condition should be preserved. Don't see the point of dismantling a good one to complete a wreked one. The red one should be the sleeper, maybe fit a T6 , in my opinion that would be much cooler than what you planned.

Fair point, although the search for just an engine was becoming far more demanding and pricey than anticipated, even good running cars were distant and difficult to obtain. That being said, because the red car is an R, clean titled, and has body damage only on the bumper, it made more sense to put heart of the gold car into it as paint correction on single stage should be night and day! The Gold car being a base turbo car makes it more of a future sleeper project candidate for us :) hope you see the project through!

Not the most common or traditional route, believe me, we know, but the red car being an R and having a lot of potential with very revivable cosmetics (soon) is what’s ultimately driving the project. Fortunately, a lot of the components are transferable.

L, just swap the turbos and badging, if you REALLY want red then get a professional wrap.

Much more so about having an 850 R than having a red car for me! For the American market, the turbos are identical.The differences are the front bumper, wheels, sills, spoiler, interior, ECU, and, of course, the value of the car. As far as the paint, it being a single stage paint, will likely clean up extremely well, and drastically cheaper than a professional wrap! Stay tuned for updates!
