Project Cummins Camper Van - Look Over, Pulling The Original Drivetrain

Here’s a neat idea - let’s build a one ton high top camper van with a small(ish) 4BT Cummins Diesel engine, an automatic overdrive transmission, and a Dana 60 rear axle. It might just get decent fuel economy and be able to tow stuff around. Then let’s build out the interior into something nice, relatively modern, and comfortably livable on long trips. The only issues that may stand in the way - mild rust, and the Chrysler transmission’s tendency to become a grenade.

got a 91 econoline school bus project Ive been working on converting. pulling out the 7.3 idi because its got a crack in the block, after putting whole new cooling system found all the water going to the oil pan. Id eventually like to swap a 4bt

Sounds awesome. The 4BT might be a little anemic for something as heavy as a small bus, but hey. It’ll make some torque and should get decent fuel economy. I abandoned this project and sold all of the 4BT stuff I had as part of my project purge last summer. The van is still here… no idea what to do with it really.

I will say, I was briefly looking at putting a 6BT in my Econoline motorhome and a good few people have done that. Seemed pretty ideal for hauling the world.

@@DeadDodgeGarage im bout ready to abandon this project of mine as well lol after all the mishap and wasted money on the junk 7.3 idi. I've seen one guy do a 6bt but had to cut the floor cus little longer. I own a first gen cummins and absolutely love it, think it would be really cool to take the engine bay off the bus and see the cummins right there. Spooool bus lol..... dreams

@@zacharytaylor5809 The Spool Bus!! Omg. It would be so good. Lol. I saw a guy do one and I'm pretty sure he didn't have to mess with the floor. He did cut into the engine crossmember slightly because the 6BT was too tall to install otherwise, but I think the floor was fine?

Hi Jamie, just happened across this video and I’m very curious how/ if the 4bt got stuffed in this van? I own a very clean 78 B-200 with a working 360 but . . .

Never did it… sold the engines as part of my “garage sale” last year, but still have the van. Would love to build it, if I trip over another 4BT.
