Project Fast Fish: 318 Stroker Build - Part 1
Season 1: Episode 3
Project Fast Fish is based on the restoration and modification of a Plymouth Barracuda.
Links to parts used are below.
This video features a walk-through of a 318 to 349 stroker build and represents Part 1 of 3. We look at the machine work from a local machine shop and install the crank, the cam and oil plate.
We had a spare 318 engine that was once housed in the ‘73 Barracuda. After being pulled from storage and gutted, it was sent to Roger’s Automotive Machine in Lake City, FL. There it was bored .030 over, bathed in a hot tank, had the freeze plugs installed and the cam bearings installed. They did some great work on the cylinder heads and connecting rods as well. Those will be featured in parts 2 and 3.
A 318 with .030 over and a 3.58” stroke from the 360 crank equals 349 ci. Our goal is to sell this stroker and use the proceeds to help fund Project Fast Fish.

What brand is that rear main seal? I replaced mine last year with a Fel pro. It didn't have those extra little strips off to the sides. Mine's not leaking, but I like the design of the one you used better. I just put a couple dabs of rtv on mine to seal it up between the block and the rear main bearing cap. If I ever need to do it again for whatever reason I'd like to use that kind. Thanks

Did you have to clearance the blocks with either 3.58 or 4 inch stroke?
@MicsMotorworx
@MicsMotorworx 3 года назад
Yes. With the 4". Since the 3.58" stroker used a crank from a 360 with the journals milled down, there were no clearance problems on the block. Thanks for watching.

@@MicsMotorworx What about the balancing difference between the 360 and 318 ENGINES (not motor)?

I wish I could do the opposite...destroke a 360 ..the difference is.030 in crank journal diameter...they make .030 over mains but I've never heard of anyone doing it. The 3.31 stroke with the 4" bore cut .040 over would give me a 340🤗.... I think.
@MicsMotorworx
@MicsMotorworx 3 года назад
Neat. If you decide to build it, let us know how it goes. Assuming compression remains equal, more stroke than bore means higher torque. More bore than stroke means higher horsepower.

Please excuse the question but could this be done to a "67" 318? I live in South Africa and am wanting to overhaul my late dad's Fury 2
@MicsMotorworx
@MicsMotorworx 3 года назад
Sure. LA small blocks were made from 1964 to the introduction of the Magnum. The Magnum was only slightly different. Thus the concepts used here apply to any 318 of the era. However, the various cranks may require turning. This is where research is key.

You are way too stingy on that assembly lube for that crankshaft to drop into. Don't be so stingy. I didn't see whether you put assembly Lube on the upper caps either?
@MicsMotorworx
@MicsMotorworx 2 года назад
Hmm... Interesting take from the footage. The bearings were well lubed, but not dripping. Each builder may vary on the amount of lube they use. Must have been the lighting. 😁 Upper cap lube... Must have missed that part. All crank bearings received a good lube. (11:05 mark) Thanks for watching and addressing those. 🙏

@MicsMotorworx Год назад
Hey Cliff. The Magnum 318 and LA 318 have some subtle differences. (Heads, lifter type) However, what you see is applicable for yours.
@russmiller7687
@russmiller7687 10 месяцев назад
Top end oiling is different on Magnum blocks. That needs to be accounted for, when it comes to heads, but Magnums were designed for roller cams, making running roller lifters much cheaper than with an LA block.
