Project Florida 1971 - Restored in HD

This is one of the rare films we've all been waiting for...Project Florida. Produced in 1970 the film was presented on NBC's The Wonderful World of Disney, following the conclusion of The Adventures of Bullwhip Griffin Part 3 on January 31, 1971. Its primary goal was to educate and excite the public about the construction and details of the soon-to-open Walt Disney World. Since then, aside from a portion of the film released on the DVD Magic Kingdom: Imagineering the Magic, the film in its entirety has been oddly absent from any other formal or informal presentation means, sans a screening on May 24, 2011 at D23's Destination D. Other than that, the only viewable footage was a horrible VHS to digital transfer on RU-vid, so bad that at times you forget its even in color.
That has all changed...by chance we were able to obtain an original 16mm print of the film that was stored properly and was in great shape, but we had a minor problem - all the audio was in Portuguese. After scanning the film frame by frame in HD we implemented filters to stabilize, remove grain/scratches/dirt, crop, sharpen and color correct the film. Then our own How Bowers took the low-quality existing available audio and performed audio restoration, removing the warble and background noise as well as equalizing. The last step was the hardest, matching the frame rate of the Portuguese film (filmed at 24fps) to the timing of the English audio. Put it all together and what you get is the most pristine version you have ever seen of this film. You are truly going to be amazed and will see more detail than you ever have in the past.
Comparison of video and our restoration process
The film starts off with a quick look at the Project Florida planning room, this may have been a set, but the models are real. So much to see! Part of Walt Disney's EPCOT film takes us through the next four minutes, we've all seen it before, but you'll see details you've never encountered before. Up next we get an amazing view of the preview center, concept art and concept models. The film then explains how Roy took over construction and takes us on a tour of the land; this project back then was a huge deal and it is seriously emphasized in this film. You see some amazing helicopter flybys of the Magic Kingdom, resorts and golf courses. Imagine if you could take a drone over WDW construction; this is how clear some of this footage is and how smooth it came out.Next we are treated to some scenes filmed at WED while they were developing and manufacturing the audio animatronics, soon we're reminded that Opening Day is October 1971 and Pluto and Goofy hand us off for "trick photography" showing us the speedy process of construction before simulated fireworks take a backdrop to a hand drawn castle silhouette...Fade to black.
When you consider how large of a project this was for Disney, Florida and the country, this film was all part of the hype and projected impact this all would have. Industry, tourism, the economy - they all are at play here and this film does an amazing job capturing the size of what was going on in central Florida. The originally planned hotels, monorail construction, set designers back at WED and even the early footage of Walt that has become so famous; all of these pieces of footage are clearer and better than any of us have ever seen. We hope you enjoy Project Florida like you never have before!

This film makes me wish I were a child again and that we could go back to when there was still room to dream and we were a little more innocent. My uncle and grandmother went to see DisneyWorld as it was being constructed. She died shortly before opening.

Agreed. Anyone who has passed away in the last 10 years left a world for their children that was worse than the one they were born into. First time in American history that can be said to be true.

Interesting to see some of the ideas that fell by the wayside, or got moved to other parts of the resort later on-the Asian Resort pretty much vanished, the Persian Resort eventually became the Morocco pavilion of Epcot, and St Marks Square and the Venetian Resort became the Italian Pavilion in Epcot.
@jimbodeek
@jimbodeek 3 года назад
And the land meant for the Asian Resort was later used for the Grand Floridian. However, I think that they should revisit the concept of an Asian Resort. Maybe they could build it near Animal Kingdom as a continuation of the theming of its Asia land?

My family went to that preview center building show in 1970 (the building is still there, but is now a Bank). After leaving I remember we were all very excited for the grand opening! We also went to the wdw Grand Opening on October 25 1971 (my sisters birthday). I recall we pretty much saw and rode everything within about 4-5 hours, simply because there weren't alot of attractions open yet. Tomorrowland only had 3 attractions ready (speedway, If you had wings, and Mission to the moon).

THANK YOU! This is amazing! Incredible restoration - looks so good I would have had no idea the work that was put into this. 99% of this video was new to me, and I loved every second. I knew about the Asian hotel that was never built, but not the Venetian or Persian hotels! It was strange to see Henry singing the Ballad of Davy Crockett without Sammy his raccoon hat. :) This should be playing somewhere in Magic Kingdom every day!

WDW is a far cry from Walt Disney's EPCOT, but I've come around to Roy Disney's point of view--that EPCOT would have been too authoritarian and intrusive to have been tolerated by its population and would have continued to be an extremely difficult sell to potential investors and participants. Today, there's little point in erecting an industrial showcase for tourists when most companies can advertise their wares via the World Wide Web. Nonetheless, it's fascinating to get an idea of how the Florida Project progressed, and to see what roads were and were not taken, after Walt Disney passed away.

The preview center building is still standing at 1910 Hotel Plaza Boulevard, across from the B Resort and Spa. Over the years it's served a variety of different purposes - currently it's the headquarters for the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU).

Does anyone find it strange that when you see this it is as if Walt Disney was going to put everything to do with the then named Disney World aka The Florida Project in close proximity to each other but when you look at it on google earth it is far more spread out then mentioned here why did they change their mind & why haven't they built more parks they have so much land that they could use I thought that was the whole idea to purchase all that land.

Josh, we will never claim to be the copyright holder of this or some of the other films we restore. RetroWDW is part of a Non-Profit funded by donations to obtain, restore and share footage such as this. This particular film cost nearly $1000 to restore and transfer; we want to share but we also do not want our films turning up in places it shouldn't. We have recently reviewed our watermarking policy and future videos will feature a smaller LBVHistory.org watermark.
