Project Fox Mustang - First Race Track Test

Before sending the Fox Mustang to Maximum Motorsports to begin our build, it's important to set a number against which to gauge our improvements. Therefore, Matt takes the car to a Shift S3ctor Track Day at Buttonwillow Raceway Park for a few shakedown laps and to set a baseline time against the Fiesta ST as well as an E46 M3.

the SVO Mustangs of the mid 80's actually were great on the track with the turbo 4 cylinder..great balance...they even had Bilstien shocks and large sway bars.

netrioter I have a 86 svo too and has koni reds and I have all the vouchers that only came with koni reds so if you have bilstein that's pretty rare. I just looked at the SVOOA and they also said it came with konis so your svo might be special. Nonetheless bilstein are great! I have some on my 87 ttop gt.

Matt, thanks for the memories! I had a 92 emerald green coupe with a full Steeda suspension (5 way Tokicos), 94 Cobra brakes on the four corners. It was blown with a Powerdyne that gave me 474rwhp. I had a lot of fun and stories in my coupe. When i saw your face on this video it was a throwback of joy for me. I was starting a Griggs suspension upgrade and had recently installed a Vortech V2-SQ when i lost the car to drunk driver. Bummer! But now its your turn to have fun on this little amazing car. It is really great that you are letting us be part in new adventure of yours!

Seeing you wring that thing out really brought back some great memories for me. I used to own an '88 X-FHP SSP Mustang. I purchased it from the auction right after it was decommissioned, painted it back black (FHP colors are black and tan) and left the driver's side spot light in place. Damn that was a fun car. I'd sure love to get another one one day.

Sub frame connectors are a must, good billstein shocks, lower springs, caster camber plates, lower and upper control arms , fwd and rear sway bars for suspension starters. Wider tires and probably a good chip tune for the motor. I run 275 rears and 235 front with these suspensions mods it's a rocket on corners now. Oh yeah a short shifter helps lol BRAKES TOOgood luck on the fox Matt! Can't wait to see how it turns out

Love that car Matt. I remember seeing a good number of those cars back in the late 80s and early 90s in high school in NY; they seemed to be a common feature among the Westchester suburban-guido set. I'm thinking New Rochelle, North Avenue bars, circa 1988, Iona students, very loud Acid House music, and the smell of Drakkar Noir. While I'd like to forget all of that forever, I'd still like a tuned-up Fox 'stang. Needs some fuzzy dice tho to make it complete.

TheSmokingTire They don't let guidos into Rye Country Day, duh! I went to Scarsdale. I played in a rock band with a kid from RCD I cant remember anymore. We played you in lacrosse I think once for a friendly scrimmage, and naturally a fight broke out. Nothing is lamer than upper-middle-class suburban kids trying to pretend one is more thug than the other. We used to sneak kegs into Shenarock(?) club and have parties there and RCD kids would show up. Good times.

5.0 Foxbody....awesome!! I just picked up a 1990 5.0 Mustang, good times again....90's style! You pretty much have to rip off the entire suspension and replace everything and the solid rear needs to be swapped with a 99-2001 Cobra IRS rear end and replace the power steering and use the manual steering rack, it works better on the track!! Have fun 5.0 liter style! oh yea, 4.10 in the rear work great on road courses, all you will use most of the time is 3rd gear and maybe 4th once in awhile....depending on track size!
@bgd73
@bgd73 10 лет назад
honest reply.. that is what keeps those flexing tin cans going. Also, the steering column moves.. just watch the video. That is not a car to just slap a sway bar on..the arch roots below doors will break.
@daredevil7442AUTOMOTIVE
@daredevil7442AUTOMOTIVE 10 лет назад
***** yea, i had many fox stangs in the past 25 years, to make that car handle, all of the suspension literally has to replaced and a roll cage definitely tightens it up but, in my experience, frame connectors makes it to rigid but, some people use them and some dont but, a engine bay brace along with a roll cage tightens it up pretty good. The bottom line is, it's cheap fun and good times!

Matt, I had a 89 GT Vert, and now an 06 E60 M5. I know Maximum Motorsports is the way to go. You might find after MMS upgrades, if you still feel the play in the steering it might be the rag joint. Flaming River has a steering shaft kit that eliminates the rag joint, might be a possible solution for you. I also had a 98 Z28 I used to drag race, but I totally get the fondness for the Fox! Looking forward to your build!
