I'm with the guy below. Not sure how you guys don't have more subscribers but I've been watch Mike for some years and you always put out quality material. Love this build!
Wow!!! Been watching this build and wish I could have that car. Been my favorite since I was about 10 years old. Well done guys it’s absolutely amazing!!!
I have a 89 Formula Firebird with WS6 suspension... At least it was. Its fully aftermarket suspension, subframe connectors, 5.7 LS1 and a 6 speed T56. I fitted brakes off a 2000 Firebird on it. Turns the car into what it should of been. I bought a totaled 2000 trans am for my donor. Made my own harness, bought HP tuners and re programed the PCM. Everything works on my car, I put in a V6 tach from a 91 because it has a higher redline that more closely matches the LS1 (and the LS1 PCM can easily drive a v6 tach with a pull up resistor). The car even has AC and catalytic converters so other than the cold air intake the swap looks factory. I also went from an auto to a manual. For the IROC I would of gone with a latter model thirdgen Fbody accessory drive with the single belt set up. They are easy to work on, you can buy almost all the parts for them now, rear wheel drive, simple, but with power windows, mirrors. They have been under valued for a long time.
There are specific items that make the Iroc iconic visually. The wheels, fog lamps, tail lights, ground effects, steering wheel, hood, decals, and the TPI intake. I think the TPI intake needs to stay for appearances, even if that means the car isn't as fast. I suspect the Edelbrock engine package was a sponsorship item and your hands are tied.
@@hemmingsmotornews true, and when the hood on a non-TPI car gets opened people are quietly less impressed. Seeing the TPI makes the car more impressive.
@@TraceZ28 They used that same hood on all '85 and up Z's. I had an '85 TPI IROC, my buddy had a '85 carbureted IROC, and another friend had a '85 Z/28 with TPI. All had the same hood, tail lights, steering wheel, and ground effects.
GenX Here. Guys - @5:30 when you are selecting music, I completely understand why Golden Earing's Twilight Zone may sound good - but White Snake here I Go Again is the right liberty ballad for this car. Stop it. ;) P.S. Also consider AC/DC Back in Black... As a matter of fact, the more I think of it - it's AC/DC all day. Do it. Literally the perfect vibe for this car, it's meaning and the heart of what all of you have built here. Tell you what - sell me the car and I'll do it. You'll find us on display in the middle of EVERY cruise night - Just look for the GIANT American Flag! Miller, Marlboro, AC/DC, an old Tony Hawk skateboard in the back seat, A cardboard stand up of Ronald Reagan, a Commodore 64 playing games on a table next to us, with a silver boom box - dude - we can make our own cologne - named "GenX" and it will smell like beer and gasoline. We can even get some "talent" from the local place to be the 80's chicks ...
It's funny how back in the day, those 16 inch wheels looked pretty big. Nowadays they look small compared to all the 20 inch, etc sized wheels out there. How times change.
I had a similar IROC…Black with a teal stripe..T-Tops…just loved it!! My first purchase was a set of goodyear gatorbacks all the way around. Helped me so much when trying to race my friends in their 5spd 5.0 LX’s. I couldn’t find many bolt ons for the car, even though my friends could put GT40 intakes, BBK shorty headers, CAI’s, computer chips, etc. The only thing I ever found were yellow foam dual air filters. I could normally win light to light from a dig, but had issues with the 700R4 from a roll.
Loving the video. I bought 3 brand new IROC-Z's. My 1st was an '86 black t-top 5.0 tpi with a 5 speed. Than an ;87 that was the same car but red. 2 months later I saw the convertible and had to have it. I bought the 1st one off the truck. She was red with a black top with every option Chevy had including a stunning red leather interior. She cost $22,000 which was 8k more than my coupe. my favorite car I have owned and I have owned some great cars including a '68 Firebird 400 conv,, a '99 Corvette conv., and my current 2 rides a '11 Camaro 2SS and my '67 Chevelle conv.
Thanks for the video! I recognize some of you guys in the video from different car events over the years. From Street Machine Nationals to the Hot Rod Power Tour. Love the 3rd gen content.
Following this build closely. I have a 91 formula with the l98, and would love to do the manual swap. please cover in detail how you cut and fit the hole in the trans tunnel. Love the show!
Man I can’t believe they didn’t go with a modern alluminum block v8 and a tubular k member. The tubular k member drops a significant amount of weight and stiffens things up. Makes cornering a lot better.
Use Unchain the Night from Dokken. Those pulleys from 87 were used on LG4 4bbl as well as all the TPI cars that year. G-Body Monte Carlo 87 with the L69 also had them.
IROC was my dream car for a long time. You did mention why you didn't replace the pulleys and accessories, but I'm wondering why you didn't spring for a higher end harmonic balancer. I would think that would be some insurance down the road.
I'd definitely be playing some Pantera - Walk will crusing that Iroc. I remember in the late 90's going to the dealer auctions with my dad to buy my 1st car. He wouldn't let me get a Camaro or Firebird because "I'd kill myself". Its on my list to own now though.
I did mine on the floor in my basement. I chose I little hotter parts though. Tube K 383 crate TKX. Bear brakes. Hawks rear end incoming. I have Soundgarden Bad motor finger on cassette tape.
i have an 86 iroc. going to get started this summer buildiing it. dont know what engine is in it, dont know the tranny or the rear end gears lol. the previous and second owner wqas doing full resto mod of the car and passed away while in the middle of the build. and sadly his wife knows nothing but what he told her to sell it for.
@@hemmingsmotornews i do not have an IG. however when i get back to georgia ill get some good pics and set up an account for sure. should be some time next week when i go back home(enjoying some florida sunshine and weather for a while)
The parts have to come from somewhere - and if we didn't tell everyone and showcase parts, people would be asking us where we got them from - I see your point, but it's a double-edged sword.
Great video , but man you all need to liven it up a little. Get excited and have fun with the builds. I feel like I’m watching an 100 percent instructional video.
I think people forget how much 380hp really is - for a street car that sees occasional track use, 380-400hp is a solid number that won't scare most drivers.
@@hemmingsmotornews I feel like that is 4th gen "catfish" camaro numbers. few bolt ons and those cars were hitting 400. a 6th gen with a few bolt ons is easily in the 500hp mark. Just feel like it would have been nice to keep up with one of those. 380hp you'd be lucky to crack 13's at the strip.
@@davesevenstrings The late 4th gen Camaro Z-28s were capable of high 12's in stock form with only "305" hp. I'm sure this IROC will run high 11's/ low 12's on drag radials under ideal conditions.
@@jaime5zero8 It's because Hemming's is showcasing Edelbrock's crate motor and it's much easier to go with the TBI set-up that Edelbrock has already engineered for this application.
@@05gtdriver TPI is what makes an IROC, that’s what it’s known for. I don’t know anyone who wanted a TBI IROC. If you’re gonna build an IROC then do it right. Everyone goes the generic route with TBI. Build a TPI motor for those who have them and love them.
