I'm struggling with the portion on similarities. It sounds like they are not very similar at all. From what I gathered in your video and previous ones: Scrum Master is just focusing on the team's efficiency and development. (Product Owner/business owner and the development team combined fill the roles the project manager provides) Where as the project manager is trying to do all three roles under one person. At best the most I could gather is that the PM should be doing everything a Scrum Master/Owner/Development team (outside of the technical work). Where as those roles are broken up in Scrum.

I came to the same conclusion. Scrum master seems like an unnecessary position if the project manager is doing their job correctly.

@@woodside4life Well after a bit of Scrumming about I'm not sure this video really answered it but I think it did a good job of trying. The problem in a lot of these videos is they talk about it from an "ideal world" perspective, and the methodology. If you take the CSM class you're going to be fed "Scrum is X, and if you do X-1 or X+1 it is no longer Scrum." Whichever method you use you're going to be fed the doctrine of faith, how it works, and that is it. In the real world you'll find really quickly that some organizations can't afford multiple roles, or maybe there were enough bad X role that they have melded it in with another and people have to wear multiple hats. I don't really think it makes sense to compare a Scrum Master to a Project Manager because in Scrum the role of the Project Manager is vastly different than say another Agile project, or Waterfall, or any other methodology. In Scrum there is no formal PM, there is a Scrum Master, a Product Owner, and a Development team. That's it, the Project Manager role is split between the three in various ways. Which is why I didn't really understand this video, it felt like it was trying to bridge the gap between doctrine of education and real world. Because I've absolutely been on what were titled "Scrum" projects and there was a PM, and vice versa. Just remember, these are all tools - you probably shouldn't use a screw driver handle to pound in a framing nail... but it'll do it in a pinch. In the case of Project Management you just need to remember to communicate, give respect, and stay organized. All this is just tools in which to do it, and you can use any combination you want.

Can a scrum master play a role of product owner and project manager

A scrum master can play the role of a project manager if they have the experience managing projects on a much larger scale and are familiar with other methodologies outside of Agile. Both need to understand the fundamentals of running projects. Hope this helps and thanks for watching, cheers!

What’s interesting is that there are people that are teaching that the scrum master is essentially the project manager. I’m not sure if that’s correct but it’s what is being taught in the agile environment “outside of csm,psm etc”

It’s a blurry line….scrum master and pm. In theory they are separate, in reality they are not. Why? Scrum relies on everyone performing their part. This is not the case most of the time and someone need to direct people.

Think of it as a manager vs an assistant manager. The Project Manager is like a Store Manager, someone who is responsible for the overall all business (aka the project.) The Scrum Master is like an Assistant Manager. Someone who leads other team members and assists the Project Manager by overseeing and supporting smaller tasks within the business (aka project.)
