We recently purchased the Graco Magnum Project Painter Plus. With this being a rather big purchase for us, I decided I would create a review for the Project Painter Plus as well as a short set up guide. Many of the reviews and set up guides available on RU-vid are from people who are rather familiar with paint sprayers. I thought it would be nice for some people to hear a review from someone way less experienced with these machines as well as a start up guide that is a little easier to follow :)
I did not fluff this review, I wanted to be transparent with you guys and share my real experience with this paint sprayer. It's important to know and see that NOT every DIY project will always go your way! I will never try to hind problems from you guys just to be able to push out a flawless video, stuff happens! Try to find joy in the challenges :)

We will be finishing up the kitchen here really soon and I will be making a detailed video on how we prepped and painted the cabinets as well as how we did the flooring once that is complete!
As always,
THANKS FOR WATCHING :)

I’ve rebuilt a ton of Graco and Titan sprayers and supply pumps. From Airless to 833 Graco hydraulic spray foam pumps. To make your airless sprayer last longer and to keep from clogging up your gun and hose when using a stain or tarnish that sets up fast, flush with MEK. Mineral spirits works good, but will cause gelling in your lines too machine and gun. When storing the machine, flush with mineral spirits. The pump and hardware will be user friendly next time used. And always wear a respirator and stay away from N95 masks when painting. You did an excellent job on explaining the set up. Good luck on your future projects.

Thank you for all the tips, always appreciated! Haven’t had a use for this machine in a bit so hopefully we cleaned it well enough for storage!

By far - THE BEST/SIMPLEST 'how to' video on the Graco airless sprayer! I've watched hundreds of other videos on the graco and other sprayers in the past two weeks, in preparing for my DIY fence staining job. This is the one video where the setup, startup and paint parts were so easy to follow along! Thanks for making this vid!

Glad it was helpful! The set up at first glance is a bit overwhelming so I figured a little step by step video might be helpful to some! It’s a great little paint sprayer, best of luck on your fence project!

I've watched so many videos on this and so appreciate that you took the time to break everything down. I had a horrible experience just trying to set it up and it ate up an entire gallon of paint in that process. I'm now going at it again, with your help and insight, I really hope it works out this time!

I was honestly so confused by the set up at first! Just work through it and I promise it won’t be as complicated the second time around! Also like other commenters have stated, make sure you have the correct spay tip for your project, we learned that one the hard way haha! Best of luck my friend and enjoy your new toy :)

Fantastic help! Thanks, TayMarie. This past weekend we used this video to speed up the setup of our ProjectPlus Sprayer. Our tips after this DIY project: *The little bitty black thing that essentially is the sprayer, the tip? Yeah, don't lose it! Because we were painting a small shipping container outside with grass and dirt around us, we lost the tip... twice. The first, when rolling out the spray cord. Second, on clean up. Add a spot of bright nail polish on the top and/or zip it up in a pocket when unboxing it. It cost us 40 mins. Oy! *I found I had to get closer than I first thought. Bend those knees, and y'er hips! *Our 10x20 ft container (which has a roll-up garage door on the one long side) took two buckets of primer and then two buckets of paint. We climbed up and did the ribbed roof too. The setup of the sprayer, and the job itself took longer than I wanted it to be both mornings, but the painting and the clean-up were quick. We were at the beach after lunch.

Having only used this machine a handful of times myself I can definitely agree that the set up and use of the machine take a bit long then you expect. I feel like once it’s something you are more familiar with you can fly though the process, but until then you just have to walk though the steps! I can’t believe the tip fell out on you…at least you found it (twice 😂) so there wasn’t an even large project delay!

For cabinets i used a fflp 310 tip with blue guard. Im also new to spray painting. The 515 black tip is for walls.

@TayMarie23 2 года назад
I learned that one the hard way! Being a complete novice I just assumed the tip that came with the machine would work fine for any project. A little more research would have told me otherwise haha! I’ll take it as a good learning opportunity and I’m excited to get a project appropriate tip for out next kitchen remodel! I will look into the 310 tip, I’m assuming you have been happy with the results you are getting from it? :)

I think I watched every video on 7:20 here trying to learn what to use when priming for oil paint. Thank you for speaking to this. I have one of these at my ranch and want to be able to use it when i get there without reading the manual. You have me ready... 😊 Graco needs to buy this video from you and put it on their site.
@xavierbrisco7561

Good video! I would recommend that you use a paint tip suitable for your project. The supplied 515 paint tip is designed to paint a surface of roughly 8-10" from a distance of 12" away. That was the primary reason for over spray and lost paint. A smaller paint tip maybe a 313 or smaller would give you more control of your spray.
@TayMarie23
@TayMarie23 2 года назад
Thank you so much Xavier! I am completely new to this paint sprayer world so all advice is welcome! Someone had mentioned trying a smaller grey tip, I wonder if that one is the 313 or similar? I have another kitchen project coming up and will definitely be looking into some additional spray tips! The paint we were using recommended a 515 tip due to how thick it is, so novice me didn’t even think twice about it possible being too large! With how good the reviews were on this little machine, I was more than confident all of our issues were very much a “me” problem haha! Thank you again:)

@@TayMarie23 Keep up the good work! I believe the green low pressure tips are perfect for cabinetry or just a 3 or 2 series tip would work for your smaller projects! Keep the content going!

I just finished using this to apply solid stain to my very large outdoor deck using a 315 tip (separately purchased) and I have to say it did an amazing job. This is a high quality sprayer, straight up - and especially so considering the price. Spraying takes a little getting used to and the startup and clean/storage process are a bit involved (as is the case with any sprayer, I assume) but the manual is extremely well written/illustrated and the results speak for themselves ... and easily < 1/4th the time as compared with rolling/brushing.

Hi! I watched both your videos about your kitchen.I just painted mine so I was curious how it went. I also have a sprayer by Graco, a smaller handheld one. Did yours come with other tips? The black one that you used may be too big of a spray. They have "fine finish" ones, and mine also came with one (its gray) Also I have seen your coat hanger technique all over the internet. I would never do that. I used Benjamine Moore Advance, its also an alkyd paint so it spreads as it dries and drying time is long. If you sprayed the cabinets as they were placed horizontally, the paint would slowly fill in the areas and you would get a nice smooth finish. It takes twice as long, because you have to do each side separately. I love a good sprayer, only downside is that overspray so you have to cover everything!! Thanks for the video
@TayMarie23
@TayMarie23 2 года назад
Hi Diane, I have another kitchen coming up and there are so many things that I learned from this past experience! I will definitely not use the coat hangers next time, they didn’t allow the paint to self level properly. I don’t even remember where I got that idea from, but you are correct and we plan to paint horizontally next time like you suggest :) There was only that one tip that came with the machine, it’s a .015 tip. Im going off memory here but I believe our sprayer can accommodate a tip from .013-.015. I’m wondering if the fine finish grey tip is a smaller one, I will definitely be checking this out! Thank you! Even though we didn’t get the results we had hoped for, it was so satisfying to use that sprayer! I can’t wait to get more comfortable with it!

what kind of tip does it have? I want to paint walls and then moldings but I don't know what kind of tips do i need
@TayMarie23
@TayMarie23 2 года назад
I myself need to do a little more research on tip types and sizes! But I’ll try to share what I have learned:) The tips are interchangeable, so depending on what type of paint you are using (thin/medium/thick) and where you are using it, will determine the best tip for your project. The tip that comes with this specific paint sprayer is the 515 tip, which is considered a large tip best suited for walls and larger projects. But you can buy many additional tips for this paint sprayer, that’s just the one that comes with it. At the time of this video I did not know this and tried to use the 515 tip that came with the machine as a finishing tip for painting small cabinet doors. They did not come out well because the tip was way to large for the project and was spitting out too much paint! But for your situation the 515 tip would work perfect! You could probably purchase a smaller tip for the molding so you don’t waste a bunch of paint with overspray (like the 313 tip)! Hope some of this was helpful:) I found this little chart from Graco that breaks things down a bit better! images.homedepot-static.com/catalog/pdfImages/5e/5e1dcece-45e7-4e5b-8c42-1689de852a8b.pdf

I can tell you by experience this is a piece of crap. Constantly clogs even with thinning paint. Stay away from this one. If you want to stop every ten minutes to work on it then this is the equipment for you. The very first day mine stopped in the middle of a paint job, went in and out, I had to take it apart about 5 times in an hour. I wouldn't put this one on my worst enemy. I'm heading back to Lowes for my money back as it didn't even get through 2 12x15 rooms. I'm not sure if these folks get paid for these videos, but these are crap.

Has never clogged on us either, maybe you got a bad one or maybe we are just getting lucky 😂 I don’t get paid anything, we bought this for a project last year and I figured I would do a set up video and mini review since the set up was a little complicated 😊
