there's a word for what Pat describing - DP/DR, Depersonalization / Derealization. it is no joke, a lot of people who deal with tougher issues on the mental health spectrum experience it all the time, especially survivors of serious early childhood abuse. we're talking about: trying to move your body and it feels like operating a remote control machine; being completely disconnected from your own thoughts and emotions as if they were text notifications from someone else as they pop up; looking in the mirror and not recognizing the face looking back at you; feeling like you're not IN your own body and are just "influencing" it from afar, if that makes sense; and, yes, feeling like your entire sensory frame is "external", like everything you're seeing, hearing, and feeling is just a TV show you're watching, separated by a screen. all these things might just sound like "damn, that's weird, but whatever", but when you actually experience it it will mess you up big time. if you ever hear someone talking about how "nothing feels real" or "it feels like im watching yall on TV" that's a good sign to check in with them, bc your ass do need some mental health intervention if you're dealing with this. it gets even weirder than that, something people don't think about is that you really "dreaming" your life ( your mind's eye's version of reality) and seeing it (your two eyes' version of reality) at the same time - always, you're just not aware of it. but when you dissociate, the "dream" and real life will mix and become equal players in your reality...they both just as real. so you might switch to your mind's eye and be looking down at the room from the ceiling; and then you'll switch back to your senses, and be back sitting at the table..then you switch to your mind's eye, get up from the table, say goodbye to everyone, get your coat, walk out the door, get in your car, put the key in the ignition...then you switch back to your senses, and you're still sitting at the table...
