PVC is a great material to make stuff with. With a piece of pipe and some fittings, there are all kinds of things you can make. And it doesn't get much simpler than today's project (*cough* bottle tube) where I will be making a clothing rack.
Looking to replace the current portable clothing rack that I take with us camping, I turn to PVC to make something far more stable, able to hold more, while still being portable.
I went with 1½ inch PVC pipe. I figured the thicker pipe would give me the rigidity I wanted, over something thinner. And while thicker, still far lighter, and cheaper that using iron pipe - and easier to work with that using conduit... although having just thought of conduit, while writing this description, I might have to revisit this project in the future attempting to make it from electrical conduit. -- That said, making out of 1½ inch PVC pipe worked great, but I do wish I would have gone with the 1¼ size, so that the clothes hangers would fit over the top rod a bit better. If I can find some 1½-to-1¼ adapters, I could possibly replace just the top rod, over remaking the whole thing - not that there would be all the much involved in doing that, as you have/will see, but I also would have to buy all new fitting, which is where most of your money will go when working with PVC, as the pipe itself is cheap, but the fittings, while one might be $0.50, $0.80... buy 10 and they will add up quick. But over all still a very inexpensive building material.
As you can see, even for such a simple project, there is still tons of things to try, experiment with, and improve.
UPDATE: They do, they have 1½-to-1¼ adapters, so I got two of those, and replaced the top bar with a 1¼ inch pipe! Yeah, I could have made the whole thing out of 1¼ inch pipe and I think it would still be plenty strong enough for a clothing rack, especially at the size I made it, but I think this is the best of both, sturdy 1½ inch uprights, and a thinner, 1¼ bar, that will fit a wider array of clothes hangers.
Sincerely,
Nick Dalton Clements
