Project SEARCH is a one-year, school-to-work program for young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Currently, more than 100 businesses in Kansas have permanently hired Project SEARCH interns. The University of Kansas and Sunflower Health Plan are featured in this video. They have both provided competitive employment opportunities for young adults who have finished the program, and they are two of 12 businesses in Kansas hosting Project SEARCH interns.
Project SEARCH was implemented in Kansas in 2011. LifeShare, a partner of Sunflower Health Plan, has served as the statewide coordinator since January 2016. Since its inception in 1996, Project SEARCH has grown from a single program site at Cincinnati Children's Hospital to over 350 sites in 45 states and several countries. Project SEARCH's primary objective is to secure competitive employment for people with disabilities.
“Sunflower Health Plan recognizes employment as a first-service option, and through Project SEARCH, we are supporting greater opportunities for Kansans who desire to work,” Chris Coffey, Sunflower Health Plan President and CEO. “We greatly appreciate our internship host sites and the many Kansas businesses that are providing permanent employment for people who have completed internships through Project SEARCH.”
