One thing that is GOOD about THIS ALLEGRO, Alex, is the boot stay - which holds the boot lid up well! My Allegro Mk3 I had years ago, let the boot lid "droop" a bit, so it wasn't so easy to put things in and out.
I think I'd cry it it appeared in my driveway, 😢 There is another Alex who is welding her rover and it had more serious rust issues so you could tempt her with tea and cakes 🫡👍🇮🇪
Back in the day I disliked the Allegro but for absolutely no real reason that was until however my elder brother brought a brand new one. He was working at the Longbridge plant on the track so had the opportunity to purchase vehicles through the employee discount scheme and did. One evening he arrived home in a metallic light blue allegro which was a vehicle built for export for the Canadian market 🇨🇦 so had had some extra goodies fitted ! We drove it a couple of days later to Cornwall in early March ( my brother his wife myself and my girlfriend now my wife ) c1980 and what a surprise I had to find out just how fantastic it was, smooth, quiet, refined and great on petrol I believe it was only 1000cc so no speed machine but that really wasn’t a problem. From that day on I’ve always had a strong affection towards the cars especially the estate version, funny just how wrong one can be and easily influenced by negative comments and opinions from others as a youngster of 17. Yeah, you’ve got a lot of work to do and the boot floor is gone exactly where mine went. I noticed it’s got a 998cc A+ cylinder head. Check to see if it’s not got a by pass hose. However, it’s got great potential and should be a super little car when done.
You can still get fibreglass front wings for allegros,probably your best bet if no one has a steel one. Looks a saveable project,don't get disheartened with it just do little job one after the other.
Will the clutch release by levering the release fork lever? In the past I've used bits of scaffold pole to get leverage and then wedged the fork to get the clutch off enough to turn an engine over.
This is definitely salvageable. Is the gearbox within the sump? I would check that before trying to start the engine. If you get this running before George goes away for bodywork, a great winter car Sparky would be. Fingers crossed Alex 🤞!
Hello Alex. It doesn't look too bad. It will be interesting to see why it is stuck in gear. I'm wracking my brains and can't think why. The Allegro was a current model when I started my career at longbridge in 1974. All the best, Mart in Solihull.
Looks well within the saveable zone. Particularly worthwhile given it's an S1 and has *that* colour, wow! In terms of corrosion it looks no-where near as a bad as - say - a month old Cybertruck after its first carwash 😁
