This video introduces projectile motion and explains the projectile motion of a bullet for A Level Physics.
Don't worry - it's not real! This is just one example of projectile motion and a way that you can solve equations where an object is initially travelling horizontally. We can use the suvat equations of motion to solve projectile motion questions. Remember the vertical component of velocity is independent of its horizontal component so it accelerates vertically but not horizontally.
Thanks for watching,
Lewis

ive finished A level physics this year and it already feels like it was a lifetime ago. I no longer study physics but this video somehow always manages to creep back into my recommended regardless. feels so nostalgic rememebring sitting in the study hub watching this thinking "how the bloody hell am i ever gonna get this". i ended with an A. anyway im rambling, hope you see this. i will be forever in debt to you and science shorts. God bless.

wouldn't the initial velocity (u) horizontally be zero because it travels 300m from rest?
@PhysicsOnline
@PhysicsOnline 8 лет назад
+Joe Curran Excellent point and something I'd like to clear up. If we look at the total journey then yes it starts at 0, accelerates to 940m/s then hits the target and comes to rest eventually. This equation is dealing with the motion from the instant it leaves the barrel and doesn't consider how it got up to that speed. You could use suvat to investigate its initial horizontal acceleration and final deceleration but this is looking at the journey from the end of the barrel to the target.

isn't the vertical distance suppose to be negative since it is going down? and another question if you don't mind is when is the acceleration positive or negative (when do we use -9.81 metres per second squared)?? I'd greatly appreciate if you answered my question sir
@PhysicsOnline
@PhysicsOnline 5 лет назад
This is all down to you, to decide if Up is positive or negative. i.e if you say that up is positive then you’d have a negative acceleration.

For the horizontal motion, why is v not 0? Surely it would be 0 because it comes to a stop once it hits the target?
@PhysicsOnline
@PhysicsOnline 7 лет назад
It depends what you set as the start and end conditions. In this example I looked at the horizontal velocity after it had left the barrel, and the final horizontal velocity at the instant before it hit the target. After that of course it deccelerates to 0.
@georgeacres4
@georgeacres4 7 лет назад
Okay, thank you for the explanation! Great video too, much more straightforward than some other guides. I'll definitely be buying your videos next year when I'm in Y13.

How do you perform this same equation but if you only know the horizontal distance, the velocity and gravity?
@PhysicsOnline
@PhysicsOnline 8 лет назад
+Troy Holty If you know the horizontal distance and the velocity (which will be the constant in the horizontal direction), you can then work out the time taken. You then know in the vertical direction the acceleration, time and the initial velocity which is zero. If you know 3 of the suvat terms you can then work out the 4th and 5th. Is that explained clearly?

I thought you don't use suvat for the horizontal as there is no acceleration ???
@PhysicsOnline
@PhysicsOnline 8 лет назад
The suvat equations can still apply - it's just that 'a' is equal to zero. I find if students write down suvat twice it helps them identify all the knowns and unknowns for these type of problems.
@arrushc7029
@arrushc7029 4 года назад
Shouldn't g (a) be -9.81ms^-2 for the vertical component because the direction of the object is downwards which is the same as the gravity ?
@Fz_v7
@Fz_v7 Год назад
It doesn’t really matter that much; if we put it negative then velocity and displacement will be also negative and so they cancel each other out
