This is not review. You might find yourself in my situation where you’re projecting for video to a live audience.
Since I’ve never owned a projector before I had no idea what attributes I actually needed except being very bright. I picked the Panasonic PT-VZ580U since it was 5000 lumens and it had at least one good review.
I shot/edited and graded a 25 minute video for our community swim league that my daughter is in, at the end of the season I showed it to all the swimmers and parents outside in a local park.
In this video I talk about things to watch out for if you are also projecting your video to an audience for the first time outside.

Thanks Dave, helpful info! Nice work solving that audio gain structure issue. Nice that you can provide your own projector. I've run into nightmarishly bad projectors in hotels where my corporate pieces have screened with skin tones that look like really bad retouching jobs. Next time I'll bring my i1 display colorimeter and calibrate before the event.

So many people could learn a lot here: When I am in this situation, probably thousands of other people are in the same situation. Thanks !

Fun story Dave. Couple of notes from an old hand with projectors: - You get more light with the projector zoomed wide because of the lens designs. They are mostly very similar to variable aperture camera zooms which "close down" as you zoom longer. - Try to avoid keystone correction if at all possible. Use the lens shift instead. Keystone correction forces the projector to scale the image to fit a trapezoid shape portion of the LCD/DLP chip. Not good for resolution at all. - And just in case someone is trying to look up the term, it's lumens (pronounced Loom-ens), not luminens. Sorry, I know that's picky and how much everyone loves the grammar police... On an unrelated note, are you planning any more content on the new BM Pocket Cinema camera?

Hey man, quick question. I'm deciding between a projector with 3,100 lumens which is the Epson 1060 and this one discussed in the video with 5,000 lumens. Price jumps from $500 to $1,100 dollars. Is it really worth the upgrade? I plan on using it for business presentations on a 120 inch screen. There will be some natural light entering from the windows. Any advice you would like to share with me?

Great video as always Dave! Thanks for sharing. What kind of lens do you use for these office shots?

I'm pretty sure that Lumens aren't a linear scale. I think it's something like 4x Lumens is only double the brightness. But 5K is pretty nice. I have the Epson UB-32 & UB-42 I use for projection mapping at music or corporate events. They're really good value for money and have a decent output at 3200 & 3600 Lumen respectively.

Great. Thank you for sharing. When it is getting too hot, just use an external fan to cool it down. It looks stupid, but it works ;-)

It really shouldn't overheat in that temperature... strange.

Use a canon projector for better colour reproduction. I've used alsorts of projectors.
