Brilliant tutorial man. So clear and informative. Just about to to get involved in projector mapping so this has been an ideal intro for me. Well done and thanks! 👍
this was really fantastic. a great help! thank you. i would really love to learn more about the latter part of this vid where you used 3d software for your content. i have AE and C4D, but not sure where to start. i need to learn how to drop in a photo or the specs of my current physical display, then work on it and be able to have it fit to scale once its done. please keep these tutorials coming. you do really great work.
hallo. when i open : ( output, Advanced) Fullscreen stop showing my data on my projector. and (DISPLAY Fullscreen or windowed ) looks like turn off. why??
Fantastic job, Tom! I really like your teaching style, made it very easy to comprehend. I was wondering the size of the objects you are using, or rather how far away you have your projector. I am having trouble mapping the objects I have chosen because having the editing window open blocks all the other options in resolume. Thanks!
Hey Jesse, Thanks, I'm glad you found my ramblings easy to follow. The boxes are 45cm cubed, so for this video I'd say the projector was maybe..... 3 or 4 meters away. That all depends on your gear really and what you are trying to achieve. Yeh, it can be tricky to fit everything onto your screen, I think it's designed to be one or the other: You're either setting up the mapping or VJing, but not really both at the same time. Best of luck, Tom.
This might be a stupid ques but to clarify my doubts, so the mapping controls the projector output ? like fr example if we map it to be small as a cube, the projector will only project that amount?
hi, it's gonna sound stupid, but i watched your video (and started with arena),and i found it it very helpful ,but, in the trial version i cant save any progress...i save the composition but when i try to load it nothing happens...can you help me please? or do i have to buy the software in order ti save changes? ...btw english is not my native language, so i hope i made myself clear...thanks in advance for your answer
Cool video, really helpful. Is there a possibility to run resolume as a VST in Ableton? Or use one midi controller to control both Ableton and Resolume at the same time? I would like to make interactive visualisation to fingerdrumming and was just wondering if it's possible. Thanks in andvance!
Yeh, I got it running as a MIDI slave from Ableton before. I remember it being troublesome though. 3D DJ Projection Mapping Demo Resolume does support audio of course, could you not just run all the A/V clips just from that?
Hey vjfit, how did you make those perfektly shaped cubes? Paper? Wood? In the "Projection Mapping 3D DJ booth" Video I see that you can fold them up..? Top Tutorial!! Thx
Hi, excellent tutorial I quickly understood. Just a issue when I click save and close, the output just shows or displays what we see in the output monitor, not any mapping, and when I go to advanced the mapping does displays as in your tutorial. Do you know or asume what Im doing wrong?
+Luis del Olmo Oh weird, so when you close the advanced output it loses all the adjustments? I'd guess it's just something to do with how your computer and projector talk to each other...? Maybe look at these settings here: i.imgur.com/VXXdbNw.png [Ctrl+Shift+D is a good shortcut to remember if you get stuck in full screen] You could work around the problem by minimising the advanced output instead of fully closing it?
Basically I‘m on tour and I want to implement this PM technique into my shows... because It’ll be a different venue everytime it’s impossible for the projector always standing at the same place.. how do I have to create my content it works with my Setup even when my Projector is for example at a completely different angle ?
+obeirneconor Just get what you can afford. Having a cheap one is 100% more useful than not having one at all. My first one was a Optoma for ~£200. I'd just look for one with ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ on Amazon where the price has been reduced.
Thanks for the tutorial!!! Is there a software that would actually preview what the projector is seeing so mapping would be easier. If not a life preview, would it be possible to take a pic of what we are trying to project on?
Cheers Nikolay. Have you seen my 3rd tutorial? I talk about that kind of stuff in there. Also, the latest version of Resolume has better options for taking screen grabs build right in!
Thanks you so much for the fast response!! I just got my time around making my first projection mapping. Nothing fancy, just getting to know the software v6. Watched all the tutorials now (awesome!!!)and I was wondering, if you can point me in the right direction: lets say there is a ball in an empty room with let's say 3 projectors around it. Is there a way to have them all 3 projectors sync in so all sides of the ball are covered and matching the movement?
Hi, Yes you can use 3 projectors to project all the way around an object. You need a graphics card with multiple output or something like a triplehead2go. I've not done a complete 360 degree set up myself so you'd have to figure out the details.

my apartment has all white walls and the projector leaks. any tips? the light is bright even when reflected off my white cubes and bounces off my walls and lights up the room and it loses the illusion a little bit
+starogre Just have to make do with what you've got bud. Ideally we'd all have a massive warehouse with black walls on no light leaking in, but if it's just learning the techniques a little bit of light spill isn't the end of the world.
how i get to make a simple output for live perform with resolume? i just have one Projection , HDMI cable and PC ? is it enough when i play it live perform? please answer , thank you :)
Hey Carti. You can do some pretty cool stuff inside Resolume but most people bring in pre-rendered clips. Personally, I use After Effects and Cinema 4D to make my visuals, but any animating software will do the job.
@@vjfit I want to achieve something I've seen a few bands do live in concert. They will have a camera pointed at each band member. They will project those cameras onto a big projector behind them. They will cycle through each camera and have various fx on them real time. It makes for a really cool effect
Hey Simon. I just set up a camcorder next to me to film what I was doing, I then stuck that in the top left hand corner of the tutorial to show you guys what was happening in the room with me. It's a Canon XM-2.
Hey Tom, I was hoping you could help me here. I want to learn how to take a photo of a stage, run after effects to make a layer so that I have a custom shaped map of the stage. I don’t know what’s it’s called and I’m having a rough time trying to figure it out, any suggestions?
Hi Rick, Have you watch the 3rd video of this series? That might cover what you're aiming for with that. Also the newer versions of Resolume comes with the option to export your masks so that is a big help with this kind of thing. Hope that helps you out.
how to allocate a section on the wall for which the video should not be played ... cut some section of the video ??? for example the door on the wall so that the video is not broadcast
Hello.. Great Tut Bro.. i am working on a projection mapping on a shoe. i done it well but projector white screen still there on the background of shoe. i try to hide it with mask or black solid but it ddnt workout. please help me.
+Abhijeet Ingle Hia, I'm not exactly sure what the problem is Abhijeet. Do you want to take some pictures and screen grabs [upload to imgur please] and I'll see if I can help.
hey I got a question... when connect the projector to laptop the output shows everything.. I mean when i run "Resolume" I still can see every window on my boxes not just videos.. I can't map. I'm fresh to this software so I would be thankful for any help. great tut btw..cheers
+Whoman Mkh Hi Whoman Sounds like you might be 'duplicating' your desktop not 'extending' it. Press Window+P to bring up those option on PC [not sure about Mac] Then have a look in the output drop down in Resolume. i.imgur.com/Gr9Ug9a.png Hope one of those things fixes it. X
These questions might sound stupid but I'm a complete beginner: 1. How can your projector exclusively show your animation output without the rest of the editing screen included? (for example when I plug a HDMI cable to my projector it obviously only shows what's on screen.) 2. Are two laptops somehow required to pull this off? ^ 3. Is a camera to line up the mapping 100% necessary? Good video anyway.
Hi Gallagator. All you need for this is 1 laptop and 1 projector [no camera is required]. When you plug the projector in you should have 4 options to output if you press Windows+P. Sounds like you might be DUPLICATING your desktop instead of EXTENDING it [not sure about Mac, have to google that up yourself if that is relevant to you]. There are also options inside Resolume under the Output drop down. You want to have Full Screen set to Display 2 I think. Hope that help you get up and running.
Hi quick question, using arena 5, when I add a mask the slice beneath gets completely blacked out, regardless of the size of the mask, can't figure out why! any ideas?
+Ben Pope Hey Ben, I've got the demo of 5 but still generally use 4 most of the time. They've made loads of improvements so I'm sure it's something you can work with. I'll have a play about tomorrow and see if I can figure out what's going on.
+Ben Pope Hey Ben, sorry for the delay. Seems fine to me, if I go to the '+' drop down in the Output Transformation and select Mask it cuts out a shape from the Slice below it. Let's go through it with the fewest complications possible.... So, start up a brand new composition and make the comp settings match your projector. Remove layer 3 and layer 2 so we are just using 1 single layer. Stick a big red Solid Colour on that bad boy from the Sources tab on the far right. Open up the Advanced Output and go to Presets, New. In the Input Selection make sure you are sending to DISPLAY2 [your projector] Then in the Output Transformation go to the '+' drop down and click on a mask, say the hexagon. Did that work for you, do you have a nice big red hexagon on a black back ground? You should now be able to double clip on the line [if you select Edit Points] and redraw it any which way to suit your needs! Best of luck.
+LucaYourself Hi, it's in the 'Sources' tab on the right hand side. If you can't see one, try looking in the 'View' drop down at the top and select 'Show Browser Panel'.
Hi Zeus. No, you only see the 'flat' video on your Output Monitor, you see the edited/mapped work in the 'Advanced Screen Setup' [a separate window] and from the pretty lights that come flying out of your projector. If you've not got a projector, you can just plug in a monitor to your VGA to get an idea of what's going on. So if you hit record in Resolume, you'll only record that flat [un-mapped] video. If you need to record the mapped video output, look into screen capture software like using Fraps or CamStudio. You could plug it into a external DVD writer. But if you just mean how do you record the settings you make in the Advanced Screen Setup, the Save and Close button is in the bottom right, it should then be open-able from the drop down in the top left. XxX
vjfit Hi man , I want to built a setup for PDP ORION screens and i don't want to leave my laptop . So i want to rec the final mappping and play it from a media player and i just wandering if resolume can do that. Thanks anyway.
ZEUS HELLAS ....Oh right... So is your output going to some sort of distribution box, to send it to the screens? Is your mapping looking something like this: i.imgur.com/1rLptmj.png If so, you could maybe do a screen dump of that, and try to re-create that in After Effects [or something similar]. Be sure to pay attention to the screen size [red ring] and make the comp in AE is the same size as that. Then, when you export that, hopefully that video will be 'pre-mapped' and fit your screens. ....Maybe...?
Hi Raheel. I'm doing these videos to help people learn how to use the software, not download it illegally. The guys are Resolume HQ seem like genuine guys, keep an eye on the site, they occasionally offer deals or reductions. I'm sure you can find a crack on-line if you look, but I'm not your guy for that.
Hello Tom... It was an excellent tutorial thus I need your help for projection mapping I am planning to do at my theatre studio. It is going to be a very simple animation video nothing fancy with an actor performing creating an illusion of interaction. I need a little technical knowhow for projection mapping. Appreciate your help.
+vjfit I am really sorry for the late reply. I am trying to achieve an effect close to the video I saw in youtube called "The Alchemy of Light" by A DandyPunk. For now I have only one projector but can rent a few more. I wanted to ask how can I work with multiple projectors inside Resolume and blend all of them seamlessly. The only complication is my project would be a live act, so timing would be the key. Grateful for your reply.
+arnab dasgupta Hi Arnab, sorry for my late reply. Using more that one projector can make things a lot more complicated, so I wouldn't do it unless you really have to. The lads at Resolume have made a video explaining how to do edge blending here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LEMaMy7sEZs.html You'd need a splitter box to send the single to different projectors, matrox dualhead2go is the most common one. Good luck!
+vjfit Hello Tom, Yes I will use one projector this time. I am using a front projection so I am getting a very obvious problem and that is the projection is also falling on the performer. So I have to rectify this by repositioning the projector.
The main thing is just get in there and try it out. Do you have a projector? Watching all the tutorials in the world won't help if you can't actually follow along. Watching the other 2 videos in the series should give you a decent idea of how to map anything you want. Have fun.
vjfit Really very thankful for your reply. Actually I am new to this and don't have the projector. But I want to buy one. Can you suggest which one I have to buy and price? Thanks you very much.
Hi! Is it possible to fie different videos to the cubes? I can't find any kind of information to set this up. I have seven diamond-like shapes and want to "play" around in some new ways, instead of using the same video on every diamond OR the whole on the complete.
Hey Dennis, Sure is, have you looked at the other tutorials on my channel? #4 talks about mapping irregular shapes and #3 briefly mentions sending different layers to different slices.
vjfit not yet, Ive looked at many different videos and webpages but I saw everywhere just the "basics" that I even know. But I think it sounds good, I will take a look at your other videos =)))
I filmed that to help show what's going on. That is basically what you see in the room with you, when you point your projector at the structure you're trying to map.
Chen Ting-lin So, are you making the video of projection mapping and projecting it on the structure at the same time? Is this the best way to make the video? Many thanks!
Chen Ting-lin You don't need a video camera to do projection mapping at all. I just filmed what I was doing, to help show it more clearly for the tutorial. So yes, I was sat with a camcorder next to me while I was doing this.
vjfit Thanks! I still have a question. (Sorry, I have just started to use this software since I watched your video week ago.) Can I output the advanced screen to be a film? I have noticed that there is a record function, but output of the record is not like what I have done at the advanced screen. Many thanks!
Hi, how can I contact you? I need some guidance from you! am doing my Final Year Project so I really need your help for doing my project especially from someone who really professional in this software
my first tutorial on veejaying thought i wish u spoke slightly slower. you talk pretty fast dude! :) since its a tutorial u would want it to be clear to ppl tryin to follow the steps on thier laptops or screens.. etc.. so try n go slow on the step wise explanation. over all good tutorial shall refer to more for learningl. :)
Hello Kids in Vietnam, the company is on track to bankrupt me, so I want to find equipment to make 3D image mapping, change the company Oh for f he is asked to connect a projector 2 screen, use the connected device and how? thank you !
