Not every project ends in success, and some of the worst failures never make it onto video. Today, I'm looking at ONE of the many failed hardware concepts from my years on RU-vid, in hopes I can save you similar headaches in the future.
But first... What am I drinking???
From Ghostfish Brewing (Seattle), it's the Peak Buster Double IPA, an 8.0% Gluten Free beer! Honestly, I would not have called this out as being Gluten Free, as the body and ABV are where I would expect a standard NW IPA to be. Pretty solid, would have again.

I bought 10x P106-90's about fall 2019 for ~$20/ea. I got them mostly just to experiment with mining, and learn how it all worked. Got them working with ETC and RVN (the 3GB VRAM isn't enough for ETH), and while I was making money... it probably wasn't really enough to cover the power bill. The earnings did go up quite a bit in Q2 2020, enough to be undeniably profitable, but still, nothing to get too excited about. I ended up selling them all in Q1 2021 for ~$300/ea. That's where I really made the money on that investment...

I guess you could try using a hardware flasher in order to flash the firmware you wanted, that way you're not limited by nvflash's compatibility and you can also recover bad flash attempts with ease.

I wanted to thank you very much for this video. While it doesn't specifically help me for anything I am working on or planning to work on I feel it is great to share these kinds of stories and "failures" for anyone else searching in the future. I have no idea how many times I've searched for odd stuff kind of like this and came up empty handed, not even failures. Thank you!

Jeff, you said you weren't successful flashing the new firmware with Nvidia's tool, but you didn't mention how that went wrong. Was the flashing successful, but the new firmware still didn't work, or could you just not get the new firmware flashed? If the latter, have you tried a hardware flasher like a CH341a? I managed to totally trash the IPMI firmware on a Supermicro board and fixed it with one of those tools. They're fairly inexpensive and allow you to fiddle with all sorts of devices. I don't know for sure if that card has a compatible eeprom, but the CH341a can flash a ton of different SPI and I2C compatible chips. Also, if you don't have a CH341a handy, don't do firmware upgrades when you're drinking.... which is why I'm talking about them.

Yup, this is definitely worth talking about. So this card is really locked-in for its niche purpose and its niche purpose only. And you've done a good public service by working that out and letting the rest of us know. So it wasn't work for nothing. You contributed to the knowledgebase AND are getting a return on your investment. So, at the end of the day, it's a double win rather than a loss.

Curious why you pronounce every letter in NVENC, when most tech tubers just say En-Venc, but do pronounce iSCSI as Eye-skuz-ee and not individual letters .. I’m sure it would have shaved at least 25 seconds off total video length 😋
@tinfoilfox
@tinfoilfox 2 года назад
I do it all the time on acronyms that I don't like the sound of. For example, I personally don't like pronouncing GUI as gooey, so I just say the letters. I think the most important thing is making sure that the person you're talking to understands what you're talking about. As long as you both understand which acronym you're talking about, then I don't think it matters how you say it :)

Just want something for my HTPC to run my new 55" 4k HDR WCG VRR screen (tho it'll be ending up in an r5 1600AF build or i5 4590S HP server cos thats whats around). I used a p102-100 for 3d photogrammetry and blender renders, so these cards certainly support CUDA compute if you're looking for a use but with only 768 cores it's not going to be stellar. I also sold my p102-100 for nearly 6x what I paid for it.

Thanks for being open about failure, and sharing your experience. This isn’t a platform that encourages “well, this did not work”. I wonder if they could be used for AI model training or general Cuda compute needs. I’m working on teaching a class at a non profit using jetson nanos as the data collection and inference engine, but having a bit of horse power ( even if limited to 3gb ram and 700 cuda cores) would speed up model training for the students. For your business it’s most likely the best call to sell Them on eBay while you can, but if you’d like a donation tax write off feel free to reach out.

One of the things I’ve always wanted to do is take one of these cards and see what it would take to flash the firmware, solder a display out, and get a GPU out of it. I've used one of these daily for gaming in an older intel machine (ivybridge i believe) for the past year or so. I've got POPos on it and most of the games are played using Lutris and the Epic game store. It worked plug and play. Zero effort on my part. Uses the p016-90 for rendering games and the onboard graphics for output. pretty slick for the ~$35 i paid for it when it was considered trash. Delivered from china in a plastic garbage bag. Expectations were very low, but ive been pretty happy.

4:25 - Could you not theoretically grab the firmware chip off another, higher end GPU and stick it on? (ie. running identical specs otherwise just w/the disabled stuff unlocked) and if it's a 1 time prom chip, maybe swap in an EEPROM instead w/the custom or other firmware written? I know it's a lot of bullshit but could work.

What is emulation performance like on these GPUs? Requirements for certain types of emulation can be handled with very little GPU overhead and your cloud gaming PCs might be able to handle the IPC Requirements of higher end emulation.

@KillaBitz

My guess is they are made from faulty silicon anyway so the nvenc part was already faulty. These are probably the die's that weren't good enough to be a 6gb p106 and the 6g p106 is the die's that weren't good enough to be a 3gb 1060 and the 3gb 1060 is the dies that weren't good enough to be a 6gb 1060. That is some pretty terrible silicon so basically they already are trying to prevent e-waste. The only other option was throw them in the bin so they sold them to miners at a discount (because there resale value is less than gaming GPU's)

Ahh see this is a positive video as someone may try this and not know it's a fail. So a plus and yeah eBay them. I would imagine that you would need a programmer, clip on the pins and do the reflash enable and then flash them. Or brick it and then in brick it. Which I don't recommend.

@@MichaelBoumanPegasus4x4 I tested on windows and Linux on a few different motherboards on a few different generations (haswell, Skylake, and comet lake) and the card never registered as running higher than pcie 1x speed even under full load. you can test this by trying to play a game like Minecraft on it and playing in a lower resolution and then if you raise it to 1080p the performance will tank beyond reason because 1080p takes more bandwidth just to render in the first place and the card is bottlenecked to hell by that specifically. It's basically a 1050 ti with 3 gigs of memory so 4 pcie Lanes would be enough to still have most of the card's performance afaik

The P106-90 has only 3gb of ram and this seriously limits the complexity of the scenes to be rendered, because the card's ram is used to load all the textures and other data needed for rendering. According to what is indicated on the Blender website, it is better to use cards with 8gb of ram, but it all depends on the 3D scene; I think the P106-90 is fine to do a basic experimentation. Anyway, back to your question, the answer is "yes", CUDA cores are perfectly recognized by Blender.

It doesn't have NVENC to make it e-waste. It's that simple. The sooner it's e-waste, the sooner it leaves the used market, reducing the supply of used GPUs and making it more likely for someone to go buy a new GPU from Nvidia.

Don’t really have a clue to what you’re saying just lack of knowledge but I left this video feeling more knowledgeable still don’t know what you’re talking about but feel like I learned something lol

why didn't you just sat envec as a word rather then letters ?

I would guess "Envenc" is known by those who deal with the tech and lingo a fair bit. Spelling it out means if you don't know it was an acronym you would from this decision of presentation. It would then be easier to look up NVENC to figure out what it was.

I think most pronounce NVENC as "en venk" so it's easier to say over and over.

3.33 because less requirements means more crap dies made it to the market.

Haha, I got one of those to trick my ASUS Motherboard into booting (because they make their consumer boards not boot without any kind of GPU, no matter what you do).

though if memory serves you're not much a fan of mining, if true, well these care suck at it now, you really want 6GB cards at the low end, 8GB or more to really get anything out of them. However, they can still serve a purpose in Folding at Home. Just a thought, though, yeah, $250 does sound better.

You should visit Europe sometimes. Espacially Belgium has a lot of breweries, which make excellent beers. The Netherlands also has a lot of smaller breweries with a lot of choice. The Germans have their 'Rheinheitsgebot', rules about how to make pilsner, so in pilsner there is not a lot to do. About other beers from Germany I don't know a lot. How about Craft Beers? You can make a new chanel, tasting and talking about beers. That would totaly suite you. And give Rambo some kudles from me.

At $250 and the power behind those, it would take about a year and a half to earn enough to justify them at current rates, but they almost certainly won't be able to mine profitably for the next year an a half because requirements to mine go up over time. They definitely wouldn't be worthwhile at even $100. I have a working 980Ti that goes on Ebay for about $300, that would beat this mining card down. I do not understand why it would be going for $250.

Totally should just sell them and use the money for more exciting things.

Given the specs, it sounds like these chips are the most poorly binned chips from the production run. Quite possibly with faulty memory controlers, SMs, and likely nVenc units - so we've ended up with the lowest common denominator to actually make a saleable unit out of them. I'd hazzard a guess that that's why they won't flash to something more useable. Stick with the best business decision and flog them while you can ;)
