Jason, Sunday 2/23/21 I installed the Microwave vent in the exterior wall. I ended up finding the Broan vent you recommended at Lowes. Hey Jason, quick question. We have a Jenn-air as well. Your microwave wave looks similar to ours, but ours is not new. Would the Broan vent you recommended work universally with all of them do you think? And are they all fairly generic in fitting the back thickness of the wall?

Normal mainland building yes I agree. Homes are built different here. The roof trusses are 4’ apart and just metal roofing no paneling of anything else. @@JasonFleckDaHawaiianViking I understand how critical and how ridiculous people can be. Many know little to nothing about what you are explaining but online they act like experts. Some experts have to admit you are right and just lop off the impeding stud. No customer in their right mind would pay that much cash to have their wall ripped apart in order to frame around a 3 X 10 inch hole in a wall that is no way compromised. I found your video to be very easy to follow. Of course if people are not the handy type they should not be attempting this project at all. In my novice thinking I know exterior framing consists of 2 x 4 studs 16 in on center with header boards on top. One stud loppped off in the middle of the span will do nothing to compromise the integrity of the structure and you are right it is not load bearing. The 'This old house' way of doing it would be to rip the sheet rock out and frame it in. I found the Broan 639 vent you iused at Lowes nearby. I have everything else to do the job. My confusion about this job was what to use for the vent and how it is sealed from the extremes. We might see 35 degrees now in Mesa Az but it quickly warms up in to the 70's but in the summer it averages 110 plus for months on end. The Broan vent will do fine to keep the cool in and the heat out. Again thanks for your video. I subscribed to your site. I will be watching for more good advice. Bob.
@JasonFleckDaHawaiianViking
@JasonFleckDaHawaiianViking 3 года назад
Thanks Bob, I appreciate it. The houses here believe it or not sometimes are built 24” on center and if it’s really low budget 36” lol and the roof Trusses are every 4’ and then purlins across those at 24” and then metal slapped on... but the roofs are basically open. Thanks for the sub and check out my shed build series it was a pretty good one. I will hopefully be starting to build my shop/garage in the next month or so. 🤙🏼
@boblamb8421
@boblamb8421 3 года назад
@@JasonFleckDaHawaiianViking All newer construction here requires 2 x 6 trusses at 24 inches minimum and double headers and 16 in studs in and out. My house was built in 1993. It is a Shea home that is overbuilt materials wise with a tile roof. There is older housing in Mesa that is like you described. There are still some adobe homes. Great insulation. I will check out your other projects. Thanks again. Bob

Since I lives in extreme cold areas, going straight out from the back to outside would not be a good thing. Because I get a very cold draft & cold microwave in the winter. We get below -55 c. Jason Fleck, I think you lives in hot climate areas because load bearing is not a major concern, so well done! Cutting that little stud will not cause your home to crashing down.
@JasonFleckDaHawaiianViking
@JasonFleckDaHawaiianViking 3 года назад
There is a little door flapper on the vent so it would limit the cold draft a bit but I could see how it may be an issue. And yes a few people losing it because I cut a beam lol... in Hawaii they build house like most people build shed and zero insulation because it’s not needed. Thanks for watching! 🤙🏼

@JasonFleckDaHawaiianViking
@JasonFleckDaHawaiianViking 4 года назад
Hey Amber, it would be best to reinforce the stud you cut, but as in my case I’d have to tear apart the entire wall to do so. If it’s not a load bearing wall it should be fine since the wall is completely built with paneling nailed in on the outside and drywall or sheet rock on the inside it makes it pretty solid. Thanks for watching! 🤙🏼

the fan that vents back into the home is a recirculating vent... the air is filtered through the filters in the microwave. It's for buildings without outside venting. just FYI

@JasonFleckDaHawaiianViking 2 года назад
Yes I know, but it’s pointless…
@jenephercastillo9176
@jenephercastillo9176 4 месяца назад
It's absolutely pointless, because the "filters" don't filter anything...smells from the stove get pulled up thru the vents and measly wire filters and thrown up to the ceiling, and circulated throughout the room. It's especially lovely if you use a cast iron to sear a steak, you get a great buildup of greasy old food smells that permeate the room every time you use the microwave 🙄 I'm in an apartment and the wall backs up to the bathroom. No way to properly vent. Hate it

I think your video was awesome dude. The major issue I have in my home is that where our microwave is located, you'd have to come up through the cabinet, take a 90 degree turn to the right, then go 7-8 feet to where you then would meet the outside wall. Then there's the joists you have to get through and it would look unsightly. I have no easy way of doing it like this. Above the cabinet is the ceiling and we are in the bathroom. As a result, we don't vent the microwave and anytime we boil hot water, condensation goes upwards into the bottom of the microwave and has already burned out the 2 bulbs. Any ideas?
@JasonFleckDaHawaiianViking
@JasonFleckDaHawaiianViking 2 года назад
I’d say go up, sounds like from what you explained that there is a second floor above? I’d go up find which way your floor joists go and then follow that to an external wall. You may have to open up an area in the ceiling but could be patched and refinished. Sounds like it would be some work but could be done… Good Luck! and Thanks for watching! 🤙🏼

You said it wasn't load bearing, but it's an exterior wall. All exterior walls are load bearing. Should have boxed it in, wouldn't even have to finish drywall because microwave would cover.

No need. I didn’t cut the 2x4 completely. Also there’s a door on one side and a window on the other so there king and jack studs both sides for reinforcement.

I had the same thought. At first, when he said it wasn't load-bearing I was like, "well, it's his house. He probably knows." Then as soon as he went outside I was like, "Duh! it's an external wall. Of course it's load-bearing, lol!" That said, over the entire span of that wall, it's unlikely that one cut stud is going to cause any significant problem. There's a whole lot of wall there to spread the load. I always cringe when people cut away structure, but in the end, I don't think it's going to kill anything.

I had a new microwave installed yesterday. It is also vented just like yours. However, when I turn on the microwave, the vent blower is extremely loud. Sounds like a vacuum cleaner is turned on. I literally can hear it from the opposite side of my house. My old microwave wasn’t loud at all. Is this common with new microwaves? Do you think it’s possible the installer missed something? Can the microwave be installed without the blower?

I don’t think the blower is on all the time correct? I know mine has two speeds high and low. The high setting is a bit noisy though. Maybe check that everything is exhausting ok? Maybe something is blocked? Thanks for watching 🤙🏼

Wow! so I’m just realizing it isn’t code to vent a residential range to the exterior? At my parents home when we get to cooking and crank up oven you could die of heat exhaustion and the kitchen is dead smack ground floor center of 2 story home and then shaped in a hexagon with a lighting soffit that serves as a heat, smoke & smell raceway. Also if you open the walk in pantry door or pretty much any upper cabinet door you feel heat escape. A good amount must make its way to the between floor plenum because if your upstairs your lucky to know whether it’s cookies or pot roast we got going before anyone downstairs does! We live in vegas and in the summer-just thinking about going near the stove is enough to get you dripping in sweat! I can’t believe this doesn’t pose a world of problems ranging from fire hazard to mold not to mention the heat ruining many pantry stored food items - anyway sure enough I took down microwave just to be sure there wasn’t a vent, even though your lesson in the OTR fan direction pretty much sealed it and BIG FAT NEGATIVE. Unfortunately I am atleast 30’ from any options for exterior vent and while I am sure I could handle this project, running duct is pushing it for me but your video was informative and helpful and appreciated!

Well glad it helped! Yes codes vary quite a bit around the country guess I was lucky that mine was on an exterior wall so it made it an easy job lol… good luck with yours! 🤙🏼

Why the houses are made up of wooden in america. Rain doesn’t fall there?

@@JasonFleckDaHawaiianViking mine got one it’s not the real expensive one at first i didn’t think it did cause it not where u put the other filter it’s on top of microwave where the vent is that sticks out further then the cabinet it’s a little square black filter and that’s the charcoal filter anytime it’s one that can be used to recirculate or vented to the outside it has the charcoal filter in it

It should be illegal to install a microwave (or range hood) without it venting to the outside. I can't believe how 90% of them are like this.
