Nothing compares to Prokofiev's music when in dispair.

This sonata is so human...and richter well... no words to describe him

Richter's ending to the final movement shows the raw power lurking behind that music when so many other performances of that movement feel mannered and "classical." Bravo!

Before listening to this definitive recording, I did not understand this work at all; but after carefully listening to Richter perform and following the score, it dawned upon me what Prokofiev's intentions were. To wit, this is a transitional work and the beginning of a stylistic change Prokofiev's mode of composition.

I. Allegro molto sostenuto 00:00 II. Andante assai 05:43 III. Allegro con brio, ma non leggiero 13:53 Great recording! By far one of the greatest performances of this incredible work by any musician! Thanks for the upload!

Very few pianists understood the musical language of Prokofiev as well as Richter, with maybe the exception of Gilels. What a wonderfully glacial sound landscape Richter creates in the slow mvt of this outstanding work, and the finale is simply mind boggling.

Try another great Neuhaus student (and a musical assistant to Prokofiev), Anatoly Vedernikov. His recordings of the 5th sonata, 4th concerto and a bunch of miniatures are as good as humanly possible.

Meredith, don't worry....Russian revolution 1917 passed long time ego ..when Prokofief finished this Sonata about the TIME & himself...This opus is Composer's favour!...Anatoly Vedernikov , Dmitry Bachkirov , in1957th also played that Sonata very good....

someone please make a midi tutorial on this already

@seanfogarty5559 4 года назад
There's some advanced pieces you MIGHT be able to squeak out with a midi tutorial but this isn't one of them 😬 complex hand crossings, material shared between hands, and some insanely awkward passages This piece really requires a detailed score, as does all Prokofiev's stuff

Sean Fogarty the andante to this would be no problem. but i really want to see how the 3rd mvt is played

@@nunyabusiness8538 I think there is a short silent clip of Prokofiev playing this!

@@seanfogarty5559 Nonsense! When I first started playing, I was fudging my way through pieces like this - way over my head. I sounded awful, but it was super, super, fun, and it scratched the itch. Sometimes you just gotta play a thing no matter what, and that's just that!

@@BrassicaRappa exactly. you gotta go after what scratches your itch. most times pieces within my wheelhouse are way too boring for me to care about
