Can we just agree that this is by far one of the best live recordings of this work?!! 2nd movement is up to tempo and doesn’t drag like just about every other live recording. No doubt this speed is very difficult for many instrumentalists but it lends the players an opportunity to show off the unique virtuosity of each ensemble, and these players SHINE!! The intonation is spot on and the execution impeccable throughout! And need we even mention the unmatched incandescence of Maestro Séguin?!! We can’t get enough 🙏♥️ Move over Gergiev….😅

I agree, the second movement tempo makes it sound so deviously manic, I love it.

Such a masterpiece; a colossal work!! Prokofiev sure footedly navigates the complexities of lovely melody and profound harmonies without a moment of indecision. Never has a compilation of 'wrong' notes resulted in such a perfect gem!!

I really enjoyed this performance. Kudos to the players and maestro Nézet-Séguin, whose conducting is wonderfully clear, (from what I can see in this video). It’s wonderful to be able to enjoy world class orchestras like this one, from the comfort of home.

There's a real wow factor to this performance, and a clarity of ensemble you find in most Dutch orchestras. Nezet-Seguin has a lot of energy, which is good. On the other hand, I find at times he doesn't let the music breathe, especially in the first, second, and fourth movements. He's better in the third. Also, I'm not sure it's the recording, but at times the main line is lost (2:29, first movement). In the final movement, I think Nezet-Sequin's concept of it is headlong into the race to the finish line, which is great for momentum, but there are also lyrical moments as well, and unfortunately those pale against this concept. In the same movement, the percussion is rather too heavy, especially at the end. Also near the end, the piano is prominently behind the soloists in the orchestra. In spite of these reservations, I found myself enjoying the performance, especially from the Rotterdam Phil.

Prokofiiev truly has one of the most unique voices in music. His sound is immediately identifiable and his impact on modern music is staggering.

conductors should stop finger pointing; it's a theatrical way of suggesting control to the audience. Just looking at the specific musician / section will do the job. Other than that: it maybe the recording, but it sounds all very loud.

Seems Nézet-Séguin, one of the youngest crop of conductors, has to express his "individuality" by refusing to abide by the orchestra's dress decorum. Unbuttoned shirt, no tie, etc. .. On top of that and he's another of the way-too-fast conductors. He ruined this performance. Take a listen at minute 20. Disappointing.....

Terrible performance by one of the most overrated conductors. He does not have a clue how to conduct this masterpiece.

Maybe you havent a clue to judge him. I know several recordings of the 5th, but this one is marvellous and I prefer it more than the version of my adored and beloved Gergiev. - Try to convince my with better recordings!

What a fantastic performance! Prokofiev would have been delighted with it. Thanks. I'm listening to it on the 75th anniversary of the invasion of the USSR by the forces of fascism, led by Hitler's Germany.

Maestro Nezet-Seguin truly adds his own perception of prokofiev's work, as it should be. I cannot give any technical opinion on his personal interpretation of the work but I can certainly assert on my own emotional feelings specially at the third movement (adagio - oh I love Adagios), when the violin section screams high pitch harmonies of profound pain that resonate deeply inside of me. That brings over and over the question of my own inner human nature, who am I really, what is the truly purpose of this one life, and where we come from and to where are we heading to in the context of this vast Universe♥

This is the third video of Prokofiev 5 that I have watched and it's the only one that portrays the orchestra intelligently. The others either focus too much on close-ups of the conductor or on close-ups of individual instruments, or switch chaotically between views so it is overwhelming to watch.

This symphony took me years to understand and appreciate but it now scars my heart so deeply. I can hear the triumph of the human spirit prokofiev was taking about. Pitted against such darkness with indescribable, perplexing, beautiful raw melodies and sounds😂. That delicate profound celestial melody out of nowhere in the second movement melts my brain into the sublime all the time❤

The maestro is undoubtedly a 'detallista' that can let us do our own journey to the composer's mind maybe just like a first time listening we did so. But now in a fresh and youthful way. Wow you made me sweat !

Как бы не была хороша эта симфония, написанная во время войны,но 7-ая "Ленинградская" Шостаковича поставила настолько высокую планку, до которой не смог дотянуться даже такой гений как Прокофьев.
