Prometheus, directed by Ridley Scott (director of Alien and Blade Runner) and starring Charlize Theron and Guy Pearce, is reviewed by Christy Lemire (AP critic), Alonso Duralde (TheWrap.com and Linoleum Knife podcast), and Ben Mankiewicz (host of Turner Classic Movies).
See what other critics are saying here: www.rottentomatoes.com/m/prome...
A team of scientists journey through the universe on the spaceship "Prometheus" on a voyage to investigate Alien life forms. The team of scientists becomes stranded on an Alien world, and as they struggle to survive it becomes clear that the horrors they experience are not just a threat to themselves, but to all of mankind. "How can an Archeologist perform a C Section on an Alien ?" 1. The archeologist programed a machine suited for the male passengers out of desperation to perform a basic abdominal surgery....not a C-section like she wanted. "Why does nobody question an old man appearing when they are told he is dead?" I remember the characters be shocked....did they need to have a 10 minute discussion about it? Watch the film.

I agree, Ridley Scott made a good movie, it stands on its own. I also like the fact that the aliens are a biological weapon. I cant see a planet of these creatures as cool as they look... They have more instinct that brains. Cant wait for Prometheus 2. I just hope they done reboot the alien franchise.
@iSOBigD
@iSOBigD 12 лет назад
That would make sense, but I remember the ship they found had crashed as well...so unless multiple ships crashed, it wouldn't really make sense. Also, some people were saying the engineers were trying to whipe out the humans to avoid the Predators using them as hosts for aliens or some crazy thing, but it's still not explained why they would test biological weapons which got out of hand on another planet of humans...
@iSOBigD
@iSOBigD 12 лет назад
Also, for example, in one scene they find lots of dead bodies with holes in their chests...but never any alien remains, so where did those creatures go? I like that the movie leaves you wanting to talk about it, but it had a ton of unexplained things. I didn't even understand the first scenes...he commits suicide why?
@kevdav63

So, just what was the opening scene about? My first take was that it was pre-human Earth and an Engineer takes some "poison" that breaks up his DNA and kills him (sacrifices himself to create). His DNA (somehow) helps start the human race. Secondly, if the same symbols turn up in five completely separate cultures, that implies that there were multiple visits by the Engineers or that one was alive during those ages visiting those cultures (unless he created the artworks himself). Thoughts?

I guess too I wanted to like the movie so much, that I may be adding ideas that weren't really a part of the story. Like your idea of the David and the old guy connection. That makes sense. Thanks for responding back!!!

The disappointment with Shaw and Holloway was mainly because they wanted to meet and talk to their makers, and had been wanting to for ages, that was the reason they became archaelogists and had been researching the Engineers, or searching proof (they were the ones that fought to have Weyland fund their dream, or at least take them on board on his expedition), they weren't there just to meet an alien lifeform. There's even that "viral" ad on YT where Shaw is contacting Yutani Corp to fund them.

I believe one of the theories goes like this... The engineers (space jockeys) weapons of mass destruction were contained in the vases as the captain (Idris Elba) call them and were cargo on their ships in cases they needed to be used to terraform other inhabitable planets but there was an outbreak before the WMD could ever be used and humans helped spawn Aliens.
@moeezS
@moeezS 12 лет назад
That's totally understandable, nostalgia is a powerful thing, I geeked out also at all the references like the Space Jockey and how a Xenomorph got made. I just didn't really care for the characters as much as in Alien/Aliens, they barely interacted with each other as a team but Fassbender and Noomi Rapace were great.

Liked to throw out some ideas about this sneaky movie. The crew tried to make contact with Earth three times (twice in space, once on the moon) and could never get through. Had Earth been destroyed already? The bad choices the crew made (taking off helmets, messing with the snake) happened shortly after the crew drank something David gave them. What did David do during those 2 years the crew slept? He seemed to know more than he let on to. What were the hollow-grams running from?

Why would this film make you think of your own death? Was it the concepts of the film or the things that happen in it? (I saw the film too and am VERY curious as to why you found it disturbing, the way you did.)

Okay, check this out: in Alien, they find the dead space jockey or "engineer" sitting by the "cannon" or "observatory controls". How come he was found sitting there in Alien if in this prequel he died after being caught by the alien octopus? It would only make sense if he had died because of the crash, right?
@stoneman127

I had thought that too. The the blue guy in the beginning of the movie was different form the ones later on. Perhaps, opposite sides at war with one another. Good catch!!!!
@stoneman127
@stoneman127 12 лет назад
My guess was that the big question was a distraction. The David character had something going on that he wouldn't let anyone else in on and he seemed to know too much. He opened doors in the caverns when he shouldn't, infected Holloway with that black goo (pool table scene, he puts his finger into Holloway's drink before serving it). Also they tried to contact Earth three times with no success. Had something happened there?

(Part 7) Again sorry for being rude, and remember the axiom of the moviegoer: "Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain!" Sometimes you just can't help it. Thank you BEN!! One thing I cannot handle is animals getting hurt in movies, and you just nailed it for me when you mentioned the scene "with the cat." The Xeno at the end had an umbilical cord with an alien egg attached to it. When the egg hatches the facehugger inside will not sense any other alien presence, and so will release a queen egg. That's what happened in Alien 3

Just because it sounds smart and just because it asks questions for you to figure out for yourself doesn't make it a good movie. This is the most anti-climactic movie ever. I'm sorry but anyone who hasn't seen ALIEN will need to see it before watching Prometheus to gain some kind of sense of what the hell is going on. Ridley Scott constantly said "It's a stand alone movie" it's not. If it was a stand alone movie then I wouldn't rely on a sequel to give me the answers to the Qs given at the end

Well I think thats true. The thing is the following: This was a movie, said to "Ask the difficult questions" and "to have a very rich mythology around it". I think it was a relatively decent film but in my view it didn't push boundaries and it wasn't edgy. Her performance was ambiguous regarding her origin but why is that so important outside of the movie? It makes you think when you are interested in her as a character but not outside of the movie.

Wish films could do that to me still. In a way, a film moving you like that is something to be respected. And I noticed you're talking about the psychological/plot parts, and not the gore/horror. If it had that effect on me, it would have made this a very memorable film for me. (I still give it a 7.9). Last time a film did that to me was Requiem for a Dream, which I've seen once and will only ever see once, but cherish it as a powerful film.

As a matter of fact, David is sabotaging the mission before he puts the poison in the doctor's drink by activating one of the bio-weapon vases and leaving it to gestate in the room with all the phials. It was the very first thing he did as soon as he got the doors to that room open. So, you see, he was acting from the start to sabotage the mission as we imagine at the time under company orders, but analysis after the fact shows the company had no idea about any of that. David just does it. Nuts!

(Part 4) You are also correct about most (maybe all) movies containing errors, and from a production standpoint it is practically impossible to make a film without errors. That said there are different levels of mistakes. Continuity errors tend to be smaller, like a shirt being buttoned and in the next cut it being open, or movement of props in the background. These elements can undermine a viewers verisimilitude, but are forgiveable (unless you see a wristwatch on a roman soldier, yikes!).

I do have one last thing to say. You're attempting to define a plot hole as something I won't let you get away with. If a movie shows someone get in a car and the next scene is them arriving at their destination, it's pretty easily inferred that the character drove there. That's not a plot hole. A movie whose entire plot is based on the actions of a character who has information that he should not have and motivations that cannot exist destroy that movie's verisimilitude. Now that's a plot hole.

I saw Prometheus last night and i found it a very interesting and visually arresting film, with the hallmarks of a Ridley Scott SF film. It was bold and ambitious, but it failed to reach it's full potential. The film left many questions it raised unaswered and the motivations of some characters were unclear, but it wasn't as bewildering as some people make it out to be, i understood it. It had good performances from Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Idris Elba and Charlize Theron.

Outstanding!!! That was my take on it. Humans weren't invited. They were warned to stay away. Based on the reaction of the "super being", they didn't want us in space. My biggest puzzle was David 8. He knew something no one else knew which is why he seemed to be conducting his own experiments. This movie was so freakingly good, looking forward to seeing it again in the larger IMAX version.

Just wanted to add a second note. Ridley Scott is a very meticulous film maker. So he wouldn't have gotten sloppy with the dialog or the choices the characters make. Some reckless behavior by the crew could be due to their excitement discoveries made. I saw it in 2D because all of 3D was sold out for the entire day. Going back to pick up plot points and see the enhanced visuals in IMAX. Great review.

The question that will never be answered is how the journey to the darkest corner of the universe only took two years when the nearest galaxy to ours (Andromeda) is 2 million plus light years away never mind the darkest corner of the universe. The other major flaw is that all this took place a mere 80 years in the future and technology would not be able to conquer those distances in that near a future.

I see Prometheus like this, that the first people to discover such things were maybe not always ur keen explorers, it is usually random and unexpected people that accidently make great discoveries. And the Prometheus crew were certainly very random, mostly indiividuals who were not really concerned at the bigger picture of man's greatest discoveries. The clues and things in the film hint at a bigger picture, sumthing that played out way before our time. Like wen Pyramids were first discovered.
@kenkeller6072

Some things David can't do just because, like disobeying humans, the movie says so; yet there he is opening phials of poison despite the lead scientists telling him not to touch anything BEFOREHAND, which indicates an overriding command (from weyland). The movie wants you to think that he's acting on his own or that he's being overridden to sabotage the mission, they leave both possibilities open (sort of) until after the fact you realize neither is applicable. Production is playing both angles.

I got the impression that this might have been a 3 hour movie, but Fox Studios wouldn't go on a film that long. At 2+ hours it moved surprisingly fast. The more I thought about it afterwards, the more I liked it. What I had felt were plot holes weren't if you take a different look at it. Perhaps it was not an invitation, but a warning to stay away. Maybe mankind wasn't supposed to travel into space. The "super being"'s reaction then makes sense. I plan to see it again this time in 3D.

is it just me, because if you see alien, and specifcally the Nostromo's approach to the big ringed gas giant, it has a number of moons orbiting it. So with that in mind is LV426 and LV224 moons of that same planet?

I liked watching this movie, it never felt boring, the visuals were great (IMax 3D although the 3D added nothing), but soo many plot holes and unexplained things...In Alien they find space jockey with a hole in his chest still holding the gun, that alone didn't make sense. Lots of parts just didn't quite make sense and questions were left unanswered.

All those movies you mentioned are great. But none of them put a grin on my face or had me cringing like Prometheus did. Maybe its because I'm such a HUGE fan of the Alien series, but every time there was a reference to Alien there was a giant smile on my face. So where movies like Moon and Inception are much smarter and arguably more well made, they didn't have the nostalgia factor that Prometheus totally had, for me at least.

[SPOILERS! APOLOGIES IN ADVANCE!] Are you crazy?! The movie is set up for another movie before the events of Alien, so of course there's going to be some unexplained questions... To me, the story wasn't unoriginal. It's not JUST people being attacked by aliens. It's about trying to figure out where humans came from and why the Engineers changed their minds and wanted them dead. I absolutely loved Prometheus so I give it a 9.2/10...

Oh and this is the last thing I'll say about the ME3 ending: it ruined the ENTIRE series for me and many others, and leading up to the third game, it was my favorite series of all time. Plot holes and unsatisfactory resolutions (or the lack thereof of resolutions) can completely ruin a great story. The big problem with Prometheus is I practically didn't know what anyone was really trying to solve.

Okay fair enough, but as a fan, did you ever want the whole origin of the SJ to be explored? or did u prefer it to stay a mystery. I wud hav hoped the BluRay release of the film wud open up more things for fans espeically, and maybe change thier views of the film sumwhat, having more understand behind it. Ridley even said, u gotta try new things, dare to try and explain our origins, even if it upsets some people.

I think the only reason people think that is unrealistic behavior is because of the atmosphere of the scene. Ridley Scott made the scene scary by adding scary music making, the cinematography dark, and the entire mood was scary so people were expecting something to happen but there was no reason for the scientist to believe that he would die. Its like shouting "Don't open the door there's a killer in the house" to the screen of a horror movie but the character has no idea.

Headcanon here...maybe the Alien-esque thing at the end ends up taking another ship off the planet loaded with the weird bioweapon...the bioweapon gets out, evolves into a facehugger, gets to the Alien esque thing, implants the egg in it, then the Alien repilots the ship, getting surrounded by that weird space suit thing and the queen chestburster blasts through the suit and the ship crashes on LV426....the queen lays the eggs, then dies and voila, you have the setup for Alien! So far-fetched...

I totally understand this movie. The alien in the opening scene was some sort of rebel Ghandi type figure or criminal, doesn't matter, who was marooned on earth for his actions and or beliefs. The thing he drank dispersed his dna and triggered human evolution which may have been all part of his plan. The other aliens found out and engineered a the monster that killed the last alien from the tiny snake alien thing to wipe us out either out hatred for the "creator" or some kind of alien hubris.

I didn't mind Prometheus. Sometimes the acting bugged me from some of the supporting characters. Maybe for me I am willing to just accept the film doesn't WANT to explain it's ideas to me, just present them and ask me to put myself in that scenario. To simply indulge my senses was what most drew me in. It did that very well, and I don't always believe an artistic creation needs to do EVERYTHING well. Especially considering how much fucking garbage is out there. This one has the glow of trying

(cont.) Lastly Charlize's character was not even hinted at being an robot, and just joke about using Elba's character as simple comic relief and a showing that Charlize was not a stone faced character. She was clearly Peter Weyland's daughter and the fact that he acknowledge David an actual android more than his flesh and blood was a stark revelation to Charlize's character motives in the film. The fact that you missed that shows that you weren't looking for a narrative just mindless horror.

Saying Prometheus is a prequel to Alien and Aliens, is like saying Saving Private Ryan is a Prequel to Forrest Gump. I know this is a stretch of a comparison because both were centered around real wars and events.. but you get the idea.. they are independent in their own rights.. they just happen to be two story lines occurring in the same universe. I mean if you have a franchise big enough you could make a movie in the same realm without it being a sequel or prequel.

Exactly! Unfortunately, even some of the android's writing left me questioning....don't get me wrong, I have utmost respect for Fassbender and his talents, and he did extremely well in this movie, but many of his actions, particularly when he screws the crew over by contaminating the one guy and not revealing the discovery of a live space jockey just left me scratching my head. You'd assume Weyland told him to do it, but those actions don't line up with Weyland's motivations at all...it's weird.

This film was never supposed to be simply about the characters. Much like the original Alien wasn't about it's characters. It's about the grander scheme and how the people that are in the film are just players in it. The backstory/ origin of those "goofy looking" aliens (that we look very similar to) is very significant as it sets the motive for the whole film and was Scott's intention in the first place as to build a world around.

I think people need to learn what the term "plot hole" means. Plot holes are story contradictions within a story, or simply things that don't make sense by any context in the plot. Prometheus did not have these glaring moments. Un-resolved plot points at the end of a movie are called "loose ends".. Which Prometheus had in spades, but this movie is planned as a trilogy, so there aren't any reasons to assume that some of the questions will be answered. Please use these terms correctly.
@slplp3

I would not consider this movie a prequel, more of a spin-off. Same universe, different direction. As much as I loved the Alien movies( 1 and 2 only) they were really nothing more than monster movies. Prometheus has horror, but it comes in the form of coming face to face with a creator, who for whatever reason wants to undue his creation. Plot holes abound, and questions are unanswered, but I still enjoyed it. And yes there is a sequel planned.

Well ur not really looking at it properly. The woman who wants to find them at the end, is dedicated to finding answers, she wants to know why they did what they did in-terms of us, and shes prepared to die to find out her answers. The dead body outside the ship, they picked up Fifield's transmitter outside so they open the door to check it out, remember they dont know bout the horrors yet. As for them not bringing "enough weapons", the Prometheus is a exporatory mission, not a military one.

The toruble is I think Ridley is trying to plz so many different groups of fans here. Those who expected a straight forward "Alien" prequel, crew goes to find thier maker, discovers engineers intended to wipe us out for not exactly being what they hoped (satisfactory geentics or us becoming bad killing eachother). Another Xeno hybrid is created to terrify our crew, que horror, suspense and it all boiling down to being another simplistic "creature-feature" to link up to the original.

Well, I found her performance to be done well. She portrayed a human with a very, VERY robotic nature to it, which also led to some ambiguity of whether she was human or not (she was, but I digress...). I felt it served as a juxtaposition against Fassbender's "David", who was an Android, yet contained some distinctly human elements, and served as the element of wonder and discovery within humans.

but I do think maybe the actual dialogue in many parts of the script cud hav been more polished. I think the main problems especially with cast was that they were all familiar with the director, and the work, they expected straight away that it wud b a big success becus of the series. With Alien it was made at a time where there was alot of originiallity, and the actors bk then were all mostly unknown, and didnt know or expect what they had become part of, with that film becming so big.

(Part 6) The bigger mistakes like David being psychic which is kind of your best-case-scenario for the film, only serve to intensify the spot-light on the smaller mistakes: stupid scientists, weyland lives, weyland is your father, david disobeys, until once you've finally counted it all up you realize you can't even recognize the film as a story anymore. The characters look like cardboard now, and the film looks like malformed clay in Ridley Scott's hands, the magic of movies has fled.
@RaikenXion
@RaikenXion 11 лет назад
I find what Ridley has done was b mostly subtle about it all, he hasnt been heavily handed with visuals, used alot of location shooting, sets and such. And less green-screen and that has worked, but also he held bk on gore,violence and such. Where there was violence it was still very good, gritty. But hes made a fiarly adult, deep intlliegent film. Its not a pure monster, scifi horror. Which I like, its certainly a scfi thriller, adventure even, but with mice deep Ideas.

3 things urk me about this movie how the hell did the Engineer aka the Space Jokey end up dead in the control deck of the Engineer's ship when it dies in an escape pod some good 100 -300 meters away? Why didn't anyone notice the escape pod that is suppose to be right next to the ship that had the deceased engineer and Trilobyte. Also how the f-k did the Ultramorph create more of it's kind on a deserted planet that has no life on it and how did it get out of the pod & into the Engineer ship?

of course i did thats why i said its a spin off just because it has a couple of element from alien doesnt mean its a prequel its more of a spin off because this movie does precede the events set by alien AT ALL its just on its own thats why the script got rewrote because ridley wanted to get away from being a prequel and if you want a fully describtion of why i think this type in jeremyjahns prometheus prequal or spin off he'll tell you

You don't think they left it open for a sequel?

i have a feeling that the director's cut would be around an 8.5 or so. seems like they cut some stuff out. i like this movie 10 times more since i've read about the intentions of the writers and the director. the opening scene is amazing.

Ben asking, "What makes you think they were being invited?", explains why so many people don't get why this movie is so amazing.

I'm still going to go see it. I've never been one to make my choice based on someone elses opinion... Just hoping to hear some interesting things about the movie by watching this.

Bad pacing? The pacing was great! I agree with you that it was cut poorly (sometimes), because I saw some of the deleted scenes on the Blu-ray; I do agree with you there. I also agree with you that SOME characters were dreadful, but they died, and the rest of the characters were great. Back to the pacing: this movie was about 2 hours long, and it felt like an hour and fifteen minutes... I don't think you understand pacing. Yes, the action didn't blow up til the end, it's called a slow-burner.

Many people moaning bout theres too many plot holes dont know what they're talking bout, just becus the film leaves many things unexplained. Remember bk with Alien, the derelict ship, those eggs, none of that was explained but that didnt bother people. Ridley has chose to hold things bk becus hes going in a different direction, and hes opening things up in a whole different way. Its a film that wants you to really "think" not just watch.

It's difficult not to take Prometheus as a prequel when it borrows so many elements of Alien. Example being there was only a single survivor, the face hugger (not exactly the same as alien but very similar) , and most important of all there was a XENOMORPH right at the end of the movie

why are there so many people who think it is a prequel. it has no relation to the other movies. it is not the same ship. not the same engineers. not the same planet!

No I was addressing a specific part of your statement....not a film. Opinion can be wrong.

agreed, the avengers worked perfectly, and i think it worked so well because most of the avengers only really make sense in a group. iron man, on the other hand, has started a whole 'who is better iron man or batman' discussion that nobody saw coming like 5 years ago.

my only problems with the film was sum of the acting, I dont nessesarilly think the characters were weak, I think they were all Important to the story/plot. Even the 2 characters most people hav complained bout, Fifield and Millburn. I see these characters, most the crew really specifically selected by Weyland, becus he wanted people with a level of expertise but not actually really interested in the main goals of what they comes across. He wanted this for himself.

Yes I agree, on ur last part this is Indeed very likely too, but lets suppose the planet at the start was not "earth", then thats gotta b some coincidence if they (engineers) played absolutely no part in our creation at all, and yet we look so humanoid like them. Furthermore there r deleted scenes and a picture which shows and states "Concept for the Prologue ship as it arrives on primordial earth". So even tho its never entirely expressed in the film, Ridley certainly intended it to b "earth"

Is that the "big gun" from Alien? You see it (just) in one shot.

She enclosed the "baby" in the life pod and hit the "sterilize" button (I can't remember the exact word the screen showed, but the intent was to kill it), so she assumed it was dead.

The thing to think very carefully with Shaw is, u hav2 try and put urself in her shoes (which may b hard if ur not a true believer in God). She is a scientist who thinks on a fiarly different level, becus she believes in God, this may not make sense to sum, but it does to me. She has reached a point where she feels shes lost everything, and most importantly its made her test her faith. She now wants answers, its not about protecting herself with weapons. Shes beyond that now.

That's the plot in one sentence, but there's plenty of details that you left out....like David sabotaging the entire expedition for no reason, scientists not even taken basic precautions on a foreign planet by taking their helmets off/interacting with foreign lifeforms, Vickers' entire motivation and reason to be in the film, etc...you should know about plot holes, considering you have ME3 as your profile picture...

Under a large enough microscope every single film falls apart. If you liked the film coming out of it that means it was good storytelling since you didnt notice the flaws. Realizing a film is bad after thought is no way to be a viewer. Example; Citizen Kane: No one hears Charles Foster Kane say Rosebud, the maid comes in after he dies, and yet the whole movie is about trying to figure out what his last word meant. Its still considered the greatest movie ever made.
