Great way to make a pattern. Just make one side of your helmet. Perfect!

I made my motorcycle seat form out of that pink foam and I actually used an electric carving knife to shape the foam. It works fantastic. Just thought I would throw that out there. Thanks for the great videos!

A trick that I use to make patterns for helmets is to use sculpting clay on a styrofoam bust. I make a pretty basic shape and then cover it with tin foil and duct tape.

I actually did this myself with pink foam for a doom slayer helmet it worked pretty well then I sculpted on top of that with monster clay have plans to do it again for an airsoft helmet

Maybe a little late to the game, but I have a question. I've done a lot of building with insulation foam, but I've always had problems gluing pieces together with various contact cements (super 77, super 74) and even various glues with the foam "frying" and melting leaving huge voids and gaps. Any tips?

I found that when I made a pattern off of something before when I put it together with the floormats it was smaller than the original I had made the pattern over. I was curious if there was a way to amend this? I used a foam skull once to make a pattern over but the helmet made will not fit the skull now as its to small inside. Is there something I am doing wrong?

well... I'm planning on cosplaying Slayer Pantheon for NYCC. the helmet design is pretty much the same one as this one in the video. is there ANY way you can provide the templates? I know I can do it myself and I have previously done it. I live in an apartment building with a roommate so.. I have NO space to work. having the templates would allow me to skip a lot of steps and it would mean I just have to cut glue and paint... also make LESS of a mess. :D you would be a hero if you can do that for me. besides! I would be recording the entire posses of how I make it. (the templates for the finished version.) you head can't be that much different than mine XD

Quick question about safety: I'm working on a mando helmet and I used barge cement to glue the pieces. It's been a couple of days since and I've noticed when I try it on, the cement smell is still pretty strong. Should I be worried about the smell?
@punishedprops
@punishedprops 6 лет назад
That is worrisome. I probably wouldn't wear it for long periods of time until the smell goes away. Maybe leave it in a warm, dry place for a few more days to see if it clears up.

@jjcosplay6087
@jjcosplay6087 8 лет назад
Hi Bill!! maybe you had to resize the templates because you made the base with the insulation foam as big as you wanted the helmet to be? :) so that when you made the first foam shaped they "gained" 5mm (the foam thickness)? :)
@jjcosplay6087

On compound curves like this, do you not need to bevel cut mating edges?
@punishedprops
@punishedprops 5 лет назад
It depends on how intense your curve is! Sometimes adding a bevel really helps but a lot of the time you can pre-curve your foam and that provides a similar effect as a bevel.

If you are doing a helmet this way, remember that you are measuring the outside. You need to account for the thickness of the foam on your template. This was how the first attempt was 10% too large. Remove the thickness of the foam from your template before cutting your foam.

If you change the blade in that box cutter with any regularity, I can almost guarantee you that you're only dulling it with that knife sharpener. Razor blades come extremely sharp off the factory line, and are very fragile.

You would have to sculpt it yourself like any other helmet. If you are like me and couldn't do that just from reference you could try and 3d print a model at home or order a 3d print from a website and then cast that to begin making the helmet. But I am no expert and probably have no idea what I am talking about, so don't take my advice alone.

I only wish you would have taken advantage of on screen captions to humbly explain the audience through your difficulty deciding where to slice your tape template instead of keeping the realness offscreen, jump cutting to the next step so soon on this one. It looked a lil scurrdy. Most of us have the most trouble at that stage there and are weeded out by the daunting feeling of stupidness alone. Then we go screw off time on yt and end up commenting on a cool craft video I found down the rabbit hole. Great tut. Don't hide tho. This ain't TV. We don't subscribe for that weak mess. Cheers.
