Thanks for the video Bill, very informative! I'm gonna pick up one of those thread marker doodads, been judging my spacing by eye for too long.

quick tip. if you try this with anything that will remotely rusts, it will rust as long as it stays in the wet leather. I had a couple of bad experiences with knife blades that way.

I love this Background music. Reminds me of a German TV Show from when i was young. It was about Carpenter who was building something without talking. Of course this Video is great too. I always learn something. Keep on 👍

would the vacuum form rig work for the leather instead of doing all that with the wood?

If you use Acetone and wrap the object your trying to put the leather around with plastic wrap, it actually shrinks the leather to fit and is done fast. I make knife and sword sheathes this way. Just a easy tip.

nice video, and i know this is unrelated to the video but since your good at making masks and stuff, do you have any tips for making a really detailed mask?, me and my brother are making a deathstroke and scarecrow mask from Arkham knight

Im trying to make my own screw pouch for my toolbelt. It looks like the same type of leather will work fine for this project, i have never bought leather. My question is what is the leather thickness you used and what kind of leather is it ? Thank you in advance

Bit late for a reply I know, but if you still need the information, or someone else finds it useful, here it is! Keep in mind I'm eyeballing this from a youtube video: I'd say the backing piece(which is the thicker of the two) is probably something in the range of 7-to-9 ounce vegetable tanned leather since he mentioned it was used for a Han Solo belt. 7-9 ounce leather is approximately 2.8 to 3.6 millimeters thick. The front piece he wet molded was probably something like a 3-to-5 ounce(1.2 to 2 millimeters thick) veg tanned leather. You can get this stuff relatively cheap from Tandy Leather, or if you're lucky even cheaper at a local leather supply shop. On wet forming leather: each time you dampen the leather with water, when it dries it leeches some of the oils out of the leather and makes it stiffer. Also, never boil it unless you intend to make it hard as a rock for armor. Because of the drying, you'll want something like neatsfoot oil, or some other leather moisturizing agent to restore the suppleness of the leather. Also keep in mind, this is usually a tooling leather, so it will be stiff. It will soften with use, but up front it will be rather firm as it isn't a finished garment leather. You'll also want some leather sealer for when you're done, something like carnauba creme, and maybe even some sort of dye if you plan on going farther than just function. I'd recommend Fiebings leather dyes rather than eco-flo which tandy sells, because eco-flo is water based and will run if it gets wet. Fiebings sells both professional oil based dye and low VOC dyes(which if you live in california you'll need to get because the regular stuff is illegal, hence the eco-flo crap...)in many different colors. I'd also recommend getting a cheap wooden leather slicker for smoothing edges and making things look nice. Anyway, I hope this helps!

Can you explain a little more about the belt loop? Did you bend one of those to provide a gap for the actual belt? This is the first I've seen this idea and I love it!

What kind of thread is he using? Some kind of waxed synthetic thread?
@_Just_John
@_Just_John 7 лет назад
I use waxed cotton thread, but I never tried to melt the end with a lighter. That is why I assumed it is not cotton but synthetic. But I am going to try it. Thanks. :)

You can use anything that you can get through the holes you make in the leather*. There are needles, threaded fids, and bodkins for materials of "all kinds". For interesting (?) effects (or more often when i did not have what I initially want to use) I have used embroidery floss, paracord (with and without core), other synthetic (but coreless) cords of smaller diameter (from beading, knitting, weaving, fishing supply stores), and "ribbon" (make your own out of strips of fabric!). Make a threading tool/needle out of a piece of wire -- more options than i can sketch on a single napkin! *to make holes in leather or other material that you cannot easily pierce, consider using a drill, rotary tool (Dremel, Foredom), plasma cutter, pin vise, ice pick, awl, nail, ....

Hardly being a snob about it. They are the bottom of the barrel for Chinese junk. Buying anything there just keeps promoting the production of low-end garbage everywhere.
@redjack2629
@redjack2629 8 лет назад
+Keith Ward That isn't necessarily a bad thing, though. Sometimes, low-end garbage is all you need. Or can afford at the moment. Like... Lathe chuck heads, for instance. I don't have more than a full day's pay to drop on a good chuck head when I'm only working two to three days a week at the moment. Cheap, garbage quality DOES serve its purposes.
