Another great build, Bill! Thank you for taking your time and effort to put these walkthroughs together. Watching and learning from your process has been monumental in my own prop making endeavors! Keep up the incredible work!!

Great work. I love these short how-to videos by you. It would be nice if you can give some guidance on estimating the silicone and resin amounts. That stuff is not cheap. I remember your video that stated to keep paper tubes around to make solid tubes for the lathe.

at 4:43 you peel away the masking tape, but how do you shape it? Did you just use an exacto? If so, aren't you scared you'd scratch the surface you had just painted?

Fantastic work! The finished prop looks incredible! I'm very excited for this game, but I'm one of many, I'm sure, to have to wait until the game comes to the Playstation. Nonetheless, this is a great video showing the process without getting bogged down in the detail. :D

Great work. Question: how do you make the fletching on the arrow? Short of using real feathers/fletching as I find paper too fiddly and plastic/foam too thick.

Dear Bill Doran, recently I have been finding projects to distract myself and just finished a project on my laptop, my new project is creating a bow, I was wondering if you knew were I could download a blueprint, I have no idea were to begin on Inkscape, of course if you do want to share you exact blueprint perhaps you could point me towards a website were I can find blueprints, or a forum I should join to ask someone else. Thank you

My first thought was "Why not make a REAL bow instead of this one?" But then i realized as someone mentioned in the posts here that it wouldn't be such a good idea to bring along an actual working bow to convents and such ;) nevertheless, beautiful work just for occasions like convents. I really liked the weathering techniques and wouldn't mind a new how-to-video on that

essteeff Plus it's only going to be sitting in Crystal Dynamics' office. So there's just no point in making it real and working
@AbbyDarkStarofKeAbtium
@AbbyDarkStarofKeAbtium 9 лет назад
essteeff I can speak from experience that a lot of hours go into a piece that you fabricate as a one off. If you need to make copies of it, for example, Crystal may want more than one (to have on display at cons, for photos shoots, etc...) it is very cost preventative to fabricate multiples due to the amount of hours put in on just the one bow. In addition, there is always the risk of damage to a prop or costume piece and if hours went into making it, that time is reduced greatly by having a back up mold.

Was there a reason why he made didn't use the original wooden bow that he made? Was he afraid of ruining it so he just made a mold of it just in case?
@TC-ek6fo
@TC-ek6fo 9 лет назад
Ohhh, that makes complete sense! I thought the wood was going to be stronger than the resin too. I guess that's the reason why you're the badass prop guy and I'm the viewer :P

Hi bill. Sorry to bother you. I'm a student studying art and design and was wondering if you are able to sell any of your copies of the crafted Tomb Raider now? I would pay any amount you would ask for so o can have it for a Christmas present to myself! If you are able to, would love to hear back from you.

I'm not sure I understand why you didn't just start with wood to get the wood grain instead of carving a bunch of lines in with a Dremel... >_>
@punishedprops
@punishedprops 7 лет назад
I wanted the grain to exactly match the reference photo and wood doesn't come with that super deep, weathered wood grain unless it's been left out in nature for a long time. It was much easier to just carve in that detail by hand.

Yhea.. This is pretty complicated and extensive. I think for myself along with others, we don't have access to these very expensive shop tools. I can totally get it if your hired by an entity to scratch build something like this for paying customer for an all out on the effort.

That's also a great method! We wanted a little more control over the final shape and texture so we chose to go with molding and casting.

creates an actual wooden bow to make a plastic mold for it because logic-.-
@midnightnavigator
@midnightnavigator 8 лет назад
+Dutchsnakegaming I can see two reasons he did it. 1. Because now he can make duplicates, especially if he messes up on the paint job. 2. When you are posing in photos with your props or just running around a convention, you want them light. They can get heavy after a while, especially if you're in an action pose.
@dustinhadley7988
@dustinhadley7988 8 лет назад
I completely understand the ability to cast duplicates, and even the weight savings in slush-casting, but for a solid urethane casting like this, how much of a weight savings is there vs MDF? Being more woodworker than prop-maker, my estimate may be off because I already think of MDF as being reasonable weight by comparison.
@danburrill8716
@danburrill8716 8 лет назад
+Dutchsnakegaming MDF is not suitable for making an actual, functioning bow (or at least not one that'll take a reasonably tensioned string or last more than a few pulls before breaking in an impressive and potentially dangerous fashion). If I were building a real wooden bow that looked similar to that one (as somebody else pointed out it's far too heavily built to be usable by a human), I'd laminate the blank from thin strips of straight-grained wood, in a jig that bent them so that the grain follows the curve of the bow. That way you end up with a much stronger bow, capable (hopefully) of taking the considerable forces involved in drawing and shooting it.
