Propagating a staghorn fern is not hard. Make a staghorn fern as a gift to give away at Christmas or housewarming gift. This video focuses on cutting out a chunk and mounting the staghorn fern cutting to a board. These cuttings can also be put into a hanging basket much the same way.

We have three large very old staghorn ferns that took a beating from hurricane Ian on September 28, 2022. It’s time to give them the love and care they deserve. Thank you for this video 😊

Very nice, informative and helpful video mate. I've got 20 new pups, off my large stag horn. Personally, I get plenty of success, I find sphagnem moss, and some seed raising soil, is just spot on. Bananas help if you want free fertiliser for this particular plant. Cheers from Australia. 👍

Good job, nice fern. when I was young we would just pull them apart. Seemed to work quite well. In our nursery I did hundreds of remounts. I used to use the knife to trim them to a pleasing shape. I think I will have to grow some more, I love these things.
@ProjectBolony

I would think pulling apart would work just fine, but a knife is just more precise so you can take a sprout from the larger plant and it doesn't affect it as much.

Super helpful tutorial, i have a MASSIVE staghorn, probably the biggest in Australasia (3.5m High x 4m Wide x 10m Girth completely around the host tree) & I need to slow it down a bit, so am hoping to divide some off. Your video has given me the confidence I needed to try a few, thank you.

I was given a pup 2 years ago by my neighbor. It grew into a beautiful adult. Im going to gift it to someone, but watched your video to take some small pups to start again with. I have a composting pile that has beautiful dark soil. Can i use some spanish moss & dried fern ? I don't have palm trees. Thanks so much for the great video -:)
@ProjectBolony
@ProjectBolony 3 года назад
I would think spanish moss would work, especially dead moss. I believe it is just for keeping some moisture and giving it some cushion to sit on so it is not dry. Give it a try and see what happens.

In Australia we have always known those as elk horn ferns. Staghorns ar the ones with the bid shield leaves.
@ProjectBolony
@ProjectBolony 2 года назад
I think they are the same thing. There are many varieties of this type of fern. I believe the elk horn is a different plant all together. Here are a couple of websites to check out. garden.org/ideas/view/drdawg/2161/Staghorn-and-Elkhorn-Ferns/ - www.baag.com.au/staghorn-elkhorn-ferns/

@@ProjectBolony They are all of the same family. I was just making the comment that in Australia we just make the distinction between those two in particular. It is just a comment, take it or leave it, not really an issue.

I have this huge staghorn that swallowed the pot it was in, I, in a very "winging it" kinda way, tied it into a tree, I recently took some cutting, stuck them in between the ropes in certain places around the tree I tied the big one to, but I didn't have sphagnum moss, I was planning on getting some soon, but hey! There's a giant nasty palm pull of red ants just outside my property, guess I'm going on a field trip! Hope I don't get bit too many times!

when is the actual season to propagate to cut stag horn please guida
@ProjectBolony
@ProjectBolony 11 месяцев назад
I would say that after the winter would be good. It isn't like a normal cutting as you are not rooting it. The method in this video is cutting the roots out, more of a split or pup, and then supplying debris to the recently cut out plant to help retain moisture and for it to wrap around.

Yes, it is just filler that will hold it up and also keep some moisture when it gets watered. I try to stay away from pine bark or pine needles, but I know other things will work. BTW that was a Cabbage Palm.

Great video! I have a large staghorn. During a recent storm it appears that a piece of my staghorn broke off. It has a small "shield" that's attached however it has no roots. I'm wondering if I can mount it now or should I do something different to promote root growth and then mount it? Any advice is appreciated.
@ProjectBolony
@ProjectBolony 6 месяцев назад
Just make sure it's not in direct sun and it is getting watered periodically. Just put in some medium that will retain moisture and the staghorn will do the rest. That is if there is enough there to begin with. If not, it doesn't hurt to try.

I always had analysis paralysis when it came to my Staghorns. The easiest way that I found was to use one of those "ginsu" knives. I just get in there and cut them off. It was quick and done before my anxiety could ramp up. After I harvested the pup I would take those leaves with all the spores and rub them on the area that I just harvested the babies from. I always got more babies from this method. I had always done baskets but last year I put one on wood. I swear I think it grows quicker that way. What do you prefer for fertilizer ?? Most of mine are hanging in the trees so I just throw milorganite up there. Thanks for a cool video !! ✌🏻❤

my staghorn is huge and just recently I have noticed some small round soft spores. What are they?
@ProjectBolony
@ProjectBolony 7 лет назад
Not sure - a picture might help - mine are really dry right now and are slow going. If you can't post a picture you can post a link to one. The rainy season just started and I am forecasting much green. Remember there are the 2 leaves, the one that resembles the antlers and then the round leaf that makes the plant base. Also, the fern itself can host many other plants, so mushrooms, other fungi, and other ferns can sprout up out of the staghorn, especially when it is wet and shaded.

You just have to be careful not to go too deep, but they are pretty resiliant. As long as you have several chutes coming out and a clear place to cut without getting into another chute, it should be ok. There is always purchasing a small staghorn and getting started that way.

I’ve recently moved into a new house and all around the bottom of the trees are small staghorns or elkhorns, most are a good distance away from each other. What would be the best way to remove from the trees? They are attached to tea trees (in in Australia) is like to do as little damage to the ferns and the tea trees as possible.
@ProjectBolony
@ProjectBolony 6 лет назад
I would test an area. They should do okay by just "ripping" them off of the tree. Most likely the roots are not embedded in the tree, but maybe they are. If you pluck off a small section then you could see how it does before you do the rest. I have taken a small shoot that fell off of a larger one and it grew fine. It is only one little shoot so it is going to take a while.

May i know why is pine wood not adviseable to use as a mount?
@ProjectBolony
@ProjectBolony 4 года назад
Well, I don't have any scientific proof, or really any evidence, but I know the pine is acidic. I would not recommend it, but it could work if the pine sap was exhausted from the wood. Again, my Rehanging my #staghorn ferns with big chains after they crashed to the ground.. I know that ferns like the decaying type of environment.

@ProjectBolony

No, but it is not too difficult. Using a long saw you may be able to cut in half, then half again, and so on. Then putting chains around the new ball, or putting into a basket. String or chain may cut into it as well. Good luck.

I believe the sap is very strong. I don't normally see ferns growing on pine so when choosing a base, that is why I recommended something other than pine.

That's a good idea. I water after. It's an air plant, so I'm thinking watering often until it grows enough to keep more moisture between waterings.

You know it’s funny but your Staggs don’t look all that healthy? There seems to be a LOT of diseased leaves and it’s very yellow! Mine are very , very dark green with tons of leaves. Are yours in the wrong area perhaps? Diseased leaves should be removed so the bad spores don’t spread. Thanks for the video though.
