The Bromeliad mother plant dies after flowering but produces pups (babies) before going through that cycle. Fortunately for us they’re very easy to propagate! I want to show you how to remove & pot up bromeliad pups so your plants can live on.

The bromeliad pups are very easy to remove. You need to let them grow to a fairly good size, at least 6″ tall, so that the roots have started to form. The bigger the pups, the more root there will be. In the video, I grab them firmly at the base & pull it away from the mother while keeping a good grip on her too. You can also use a clean, sharp knife to cut the pup away.
I put my pups in a shaded corner on the patio right off my kitchen. They’re protected from the strong desert sun & the winds which tend to whip around in the afternoon. Because it’s the end of May & temps are nearing triple digits, I water them once or twice a week. You may not need to water yours that often.
It’s nice to know that even though the bromeliad with the pretty flower you bought eventually dies, babies will appear for you to pot up & watch grow. The lineage is carried on!

Get down in there, Gladys. Can you transplant the pups into three separate pots later, when they are bigger?

Hi Nell. I just purchased a bromeliad vriesea gubernill. It has very pretty spotted leaves, and I just noticed it has a couple of pups about 3 inches long hiding in between the mother leaves and not growing on the soil. How in the world would I remove them? Thank you in advance.

I liked your video and subject matter very much.But I live in Florida and there is a problem with mosqitos and Bromeliads. Is there a solution with the water retention in the leaves and bug larvae?
@pershop4950
@pershop4950 4 года назад
Just water like other plants, and then remove the water by tipping over the pot. The bromeliad gets some water and you won't be breeding lots of mosquitoes (though admittedly, they don't need too much water to breed in!)

thx i have bromeliads too. One bloomed last summer and has 3 pups which are larger than the mother plant right now but I want to keep them all together until the mother plant dies. Maybe they will all bloom at the same time.
@JoyUsGarden
@JoyUsGarden 7 лет назад
You can just cut the mother plant down & leave the pups in the pot if you'd like. That works too! Nell
@MeyRevived
@MeyRevived 7 лет назад
What happens if you don't remove the pups from the mother? Does it eventually become a large colony of bromeliads? Do pups start growing their own root system if they get big enough?
@JoyUsGarden
@JoyUsGarden 7 лет назад
Hi - You can leave the pups attached to the mother & just cut her away after she dies. That's what I would do in my garden in Santa Barbara. A clump does form & the root systems of the pups grow over time. Nell

can I just use the special orchid potting mix just by itself instead of adding medium potting soil with the mix when planting a new guzmania ?
@JoyUsGarden
@JoyUsGarden 7 лет назад
Hi Jeremy - Yes, orchid mix would work just fine too. Both bromeliads & orchids are epiphytes. Nell

Hi! Thank you for your video. I wanted to know If you can pot Bromeliads with other plants, if so, what kind will go well with them?
@Wadadli68

Hi Nell. I took the pups off my guzmania about 2yrs ago. Nice green leaves but no flower spike. How long will they take to flower? What can I do to encourage them to flower?
@JoyUsGarden
@JoyUsGarden 7 лет назад
Hi Jennifer - The pups take 2-5 years to flower. It's a waiting game but putting them in bright natural light (out of direct hot sun) will help. Nell

Do I cut the brown off the leaves, and why are my leaves turning brown? Thank you for your info today as I've never had this plant. I love the look of this plant but maybe I have been over watering it.

Just discovered your videos, so helpful! You are terrific! thanks so much, I just had , and sadly overwatered and hastened the demise of my first bromeliad ever. The flower had already died and I was hoping to keep the mother but..... well, now I know better from your videos on how much and when to water! I now have 2 more and I want to keep these going!

Thanks to your video, I noticed there’s a pup and another one coming out on my bloomed out bromeliad, so exciting! Now I know what to do once it gets bigger. I’m so amazed how you have so many plants outside in our desert weather...problem is I don’t have much shade in mine so they fry 🔥 the only ones that have survived outside in pots for me are the easy ones 😂 portulaca, bougainvillea, Rosemary & foxtail

I have a little guzmania bromeliad, and it’s only around 4 inches tall. I’ve had it for about four months, and it’s been looking pretty good. However, I think I got it after it’s already flowered, and it is now producing pups. I want to save at least one of the pups (there are 3), but I’m just concerned because my bromeliad is so small. How big should I let the pups get before I remove them, if I should at all?

I was given one of these as a birthday present to add to my personal jungle. It has two pups, he largest is about 3" the other is about 2 1/2". I've thought about separating them but after watching this I think I'll wait until they're a little larger. Thanks for this video, it helped me understand these plants better.

Thank you! It really helped and you did it nicely. What do I do with the pups if the mother is rotting? I left on vacations for three weeks and my friend was taking care of it. She overwatered it so much, when I arrived I had to drain water out of the pot. Also, is it true that Bromeliads should be watered on the leaves-center instead of the soil? Thank you!
