March 13 -- At about five days, green tips started to appear. It's been nine days now and now there are long green buds that are almost ready to unfurl into leaves. This is both good and bad. If the leaves open up and there are no roots to support them then they will use up all of the moisture/energy stored in the dormant cutting to support the leaves. They need roots to supply nutrients and moisture so hopefully the root progress is following the bud progress and these cuttings will be able to be transplanted into their own pots in a couple more weeks or-so. I will be spritzing the leaves with Wilt Stop to help slow the transpiration, but they should ne just fine. I am more worried about the Bur Oak cuttings than these. If I see roots coming out of the bottom of the pot I'll transplant them at that time, otherwise April 4th - one month - they will be removed regardless. 🌸

Such an awesome & thorough video on propagating common Lilac bushes! TY! I"ve used plenty of DIP N Grow over the years but the Wilt Stop was new to me! Will definitely order some from your link above! Thanks for the great horticulture class in the middle of the night when sleep was far from me! OH, and your sweet cat napping in 'his' greenhouse- how SWEET! = ) -Suzie

@PlanetMojo 3 года назад
Thanks Suzie! I've never used DIP N Grow before and am trying it on the recommendation of a fellow vineyard owner. I always used that powder stuff or nothing at all. I appreciate any orders from the affiliate links! It adds a little bit to the channel account that goes back into the channel eventually. As for the cat... that was Tater, a Persian/Tomcat mix we got from a friend. She's trying to be my best friend which pisses off my other cat Mazie who is the star of lots of videos in the summer time. It's a high drama situation at times around here 😉

@@HoneybeePatriot I have a story about Natalie's snake getting out - I'll try to get her to help tell it soon. Fun fact about Tater is that we like to joke that she is our Persian Rug. Just propagated grapes and red twig dogwoods yesterday pretty easy to do! The wait for success sucks!
@PlanetMojo
@PlanetMojo 3 года назад
Hi John, I like propagating grapes the best. I use a method I learned from a large vineyard where they bag the cuttings in peat and put them in a warm box. They can do thousands of cuttings with very little fuss. I propagated the grapes a couple of days ago and am impatiently waiting as well. 😉 - I agree. It really sucks!
@HomeProHero
@HomeProHero 3 года назад
@@PlanetMojo Yeah I tried the bag method last year after you showed the video. Didn't have a ton of success must have done something wrong. I have had a ton of success with softwood propagating grapes vines. Those I propagated last year will get planted in the vineyard this spring so I'm curious to see how they do!
@PlanetMojo
@PlanetMojo 3 года назад
@@HomeProHero I've only had the bag method fail once - and that was last year as well. I let them sit in the bag for way too long and they had good sized white leaves when I finally took them out. My bad! I am checking them every morning this time as I really need them to fill a row this spring! 🍇

March 4 -- I took this year's cuttings from the common lilac bushes. Two years ago I tried using a bin instead of a bag for propagating grape vines. I just ran across that bin while cleaning the shed, and it reminded me that I made a video of the process so I decided to put up a link to it. I did the bag method again this year - hopefully with success 😉 Potting the Grape Cuttings - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-b0v4BQ_OOUA.html

Thank you for the info…I found it just in time to try your method this year! We have a couple of really old lilacs on a homestead that no longer send up suckers so I’m left with trying to propagate via cuttings. I hope I don’t get too discouraged, as I’ve recently had great success with pussy willows (easy I know) and hydrangeas as well. Wish me luck!

Good luck! Lilac are not as easy as pussy willow or hydrangea, but can be done. Just watch out for grey mold.

Lilacs have three ways to propagate. Hardwood cuttings, softwood cuttings, and the sucker plants at it's base. The suckers are by far the easiest , but there are only so many of them. I'll be making a video of that as well a bit later. This may fail so I would wait to see the results 😉

Hi Gail, you really have nothing to loose if you would like a few more bushes. If it fails nothing much is lost and your bush gets a little hedging 😊The DIP N Grow and Wilt Stop can be used for years on other things. The Wilt Stop was actually designed to help plants through droughts, and I use it on sick plants as it helps them keep hydrated. And it's fun 😉!!!

Can I use powder rooting hormone? Do I have to use wilt thing or just take risk without? I prefer to root it in the ground in early spring, I am zone 6a. I am very successful to do cuttings in the spring in the moist area of my garden. When can I do this outside?
@dlutkins9
@dlutkins9 9 месяцев назад
Have you tried a test to propagate lilacs from the same batch of cuttings, one set using rooting hormone and another set without using rooting hormone? I just wonder if the rooting hormone makes a significant difference, but maybe it is plant specific? I know that I have had 100% success propagating willows and holly without using rooting hormone, but my lilac cuttings usually fail regardless of whether I use hormone.

Is winter the best time to take branch cuttings, or could I do it in the early summer? I have a lilac that's already blooming on some branches (and not on others), and it is approaching late spring where I am. Please advise, thanks Also, when taking cuttings, is longer and thicker better (i.e. the entire big branch)?
@PlanetMojo
@PlanetMojo 3 года назад
In the summer you can take softwood cuttings, but even better would be to dig up suckers from the base of the bush. A larger bush will have hundreds of them. Good luck!
@Shizuyumi
@Shizuyumi 3 года назад
@@PlanetMojo I've tried to look for suckers, but haven't seen any yet. I have seen some green stems sprouting out deep inside from the main stem though, if those count? As of today, the lilac blooms have started to die down already. When should I plan to make cuttings?
@brucea550

@@Shizuyumi suckers grow near the main trunk. If you have none you can take pencil size or smaller low branches and pin them to the ground and they will root in a season.
