Thanks for the video. I planted 3 Musa S. seeds 2 months ago. Like a Canna seed, I decided to scarify one of the seeds after soaking. It definitely is a waiting game!

I managed to germinate a banana from seed by sanding it and then putting the seed in a plastic bag with damp compost and placed in a warm airing cupboard checking every few days for germination.

Your plants are beautiful...I am hoping to grow some ornamental bananas from sed...I have read that you can slightly abrade the seed, such as against some sand paper but it cannot be too deeply abraded... to help it germinate faster as well...I believe that is done before the soak. Thank you for this video!

I am trying some this year only been a week and in Canada it is hot in the day and cool at night this spring so I have one in a pot and one in the garden if it doesn't work I will have to try over the winter.

Thank you for posting this video! Your tips/advice are helpful and straight to the point. I know it has been several years, but have your Musa acuminata plants kept on and produced fruit? I'm wanting to give the Musa acuminata a go, but I live in the Northern Midwest of the States. The plant would have to be kept indoors, and the height of 6-10ft tall is a bit daunting (as well as the full lighting needs).

Bananas all produce corms which can be stored dry in coolish temperatures during your winters. Just like cannas, gladiolas, dahlias, etc. No sunlight or moisture. Simply cut the tall plant back, and let the corm and the stalk dry out naturally before bringing it in for winter. Trim roots as they will not last the winter and in Spring new roots re-grow quickly. Keep dry during the winter months. Like most herbaceous perennials, it stores well and can be replanted in late spring/early summer after the danger of frost has passed. These corms hold a lot of water and will not die during forced winter storage. Dig them up before the first killing frost, let them dry, and remove soil from around the corms as it contains moisture and bacteria. Well-established banana plants can take a lot of abuse and come through just fine. Do not wrap with peat. Allow fresh air to circulate around dormant corms and you will be good to go at planting time! Contrary to popular belief, bananas are quite drought tolerant, but love lots of water during the outside growing season. They are heavy feeders and Miracle-Gro is one of the best commercially available fertilizers with an NPK of 15-30-15. Nitrogen aids in fast green growth, and Phosphorus aids in the development of fruit and flower as well as root growth. Potassium (also known as Potash) assists in strong cellular growth such as in the chloroplasts which produce energy from sunlight aiding in the process of photosynthesis. If you have access to rotted/aged chicken manure, that stuff is MAGIC! Best of luck!

Could you clarify approximately how much saltpeter you used in that jar? Unfortunately this good info is kind of useless if we don’t have qualities. I’d love to try this method!
@ThemCrookdVultures
@ThemCrookdVultures 2 года назад
From the company I purchased saltpeter from, they suggested 300 ml of water for 3 grams of saltpeter. This was for chili seed germination though so I don’t know if banana seeds might need a higher saltpeter amount.

What is your advice on MUSA INGENS? Growing from seeds.
@greengold7648
@greengold7648 Год назад
I had one shipped in from New Guinea two months ago and it is growing well. I bought the corm with a stalk. Seeds are more difficult. Scarify, soak in very warm water and provide heating cables beneath the seeds to ensure the best possible chance to germinate. Soaking in salt peeter works well. Mine does well in the morning sunlight and filtered afternoon light, but then again, I live in a Mediterranean climate.

I only watched the video today, but he says 'Saltpetre' (Potassium Nitrate). Banana seeds are notoriously hard to germinate, never as easy as it implies on the packet. I soaked some seed in water for a few days and they came out as hard as gravel. Chipping the seed is difficult as you are likely to damage it. I am now trying a new technique following my experience with packet seed. Good luck!

Hi Chavy. I am from Greece and I want to germinate banana seed that I bought from ebay. I read some infos on the net and saw some videos. The one that I dont understood is what you cut , why you cut and when do you cut?? thank you alot
@lp9342
@lp9342 7 лет назад
oh... ok. So we do not have to cut any part of the plant in order to grow properly.... or something like that. You did it to grow more plants. now i got it. As far as i read you can do this but when the tree has grown (you cut the secondary plants that grow and disturb...) thank for responding. I will post any update or question. cheers from Greece

I have bought banana seeds from ebay, but the seeds are tiny. Since getting the seeds I have looked all over the Internet at banana seeds and they are all big. One of the seeds has sprouted now and is about 3 inches tall, but I can’t say it looks like a banana tree. The leaves are long, if anyone has any idea please let me know. The sellers on ebay sell them as Bonsai Banana seeds, I would also like to know the real name if anyone has knowledge of these plants as the seller on ebay does not seem to know. Thanks for the video 🍻
@festerboyle4840
@festerboyle4840 5 лет назад
Many of the seed sellers on Ebay are just scams. Look for a specialist tropical/exotic plant seller in your country or one that does international sales - reputable sellers have their own websites. The seed may be a little more expensive, but you will get what you have ordered and the seed should be fresh(er).

tim smith it really depends on how fresh the seed is. Mash up a banana and press the seeds into it. Leave that to forment for about 3 weeks then rinse the seeds and sow them. It’s then really important to give the seeds that variation in temperature when in the propagator. So on for 8 hours then off for 16. Then it’s time to wait it out! The banana method should really halp though.
