I thought it would be fun to try to grow a banana tree starting from seeds. I was able to get some seeds to sprout last summer, and by late this summer we actually had little pink bananas on our Musa Velutina Pink Banana tree. In this video, I will explain how I got the seeds to sprout, and how I took care of the banana tree in order to get it to produce bananas. I also have a Musa Basjoo Banana tree that was growing right next to the Musa Velutina banana.

I'd failed at growing pink banana seeds before so after seeing this video this past winter I decided to hold off on planting any more seeds indoors. I just stuck them all in pots outside come springtime. Now I have about ten baby plants, thanks for the tip!

Nice. I am giving velutina a go here in the UK. My musa basjoo produced bananas last year at only 8’ -8’ of pseudo stem . I do wrap it up every year in straw to keep the psuedo stems from dying in the cold. After 10 years success. I hope to get velutina to fruit. I will keep a couple in pots inside and the rest outside wrapped in straw over winter. I think with our cool summers 50-80F it will take two or three full summers to fruit. Great video very helpful thanks

This year I planted 10 Hardy Banana trees behind the waterfall that goes into the pool to bring a tropical look to the yard in these interesting times to give the kids a tropical vacation feel at home.. we are located in St Louis, Mo. Question - was considering mulching like you recommend but placing a tarp on top of the entire mound.. is that a bad idea?
@MidwestGardener
@MidwestGardener 3 года назад
That is a good question, but I'm not sure that I have a good answer. A tarp would help keep the ground from freezing, which is good, but it would also keep moisture from reaching the bananas. I'm not sure how they would do with no moisture for the entire winter period. If they are Musa basjoo, they would probably be fine anyway, but that is just a guess on my part. Mine seem to be very hardy. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Got some seeds today, hoping to grow some here in ireland. How long did your seeds take to germinate?

I don't remember for sure, but they took at least a couple of months, maybe longer. Good luck!

@@MidwestGardener Thanks for the reply. Do I understand correctly, that you hardened off and now it's just permanently outside? Does it just die off every winter and then grow again from the roots? Was planning to grow in my greenhouse but would be nice to grow outside too.

@@cocospops9351 I covered it with straw each fall, and it came back for several years. Then one year it just didn't come back.
