We have a boat salvage yard here in central Ontario Canada; I went there for a several items last summer. My wife and I were standing there wearing shorts and a T shirt, at the only entrance, where 4 of them we’re grouped together. When I told one of them what I was looking for, the guy said to a teenager: “go with this guy a make sure he doesn’t steal anything”. My wife turned and walked back to the car. We had driven over 45 minutes so, I went in. I did purchase a trim gauge, but, his attitude was clear that he didn’t want or need my business. I’ll order off e-bay before I go back there. We did have a laugh driving home tho, he was so serious.

I can imagine the smooth nature of the Mercury 115 straight-6 contributed to their mechanical longevity. .

How did you both get into this industry?

Here in Missouri salvage boats are considered "toxic waste". Can't burn them or bury them. ........So there they set until a tornado comes along. 😅

Inline 4's run pistons in pairs. 1+4 are pairs and 2+3 are pairs. When #1 is firing #4 is intaking.

A dielectric grease is a insulator grease... I would think it would impair electrical connections .. especially low voltage data connections...

You do use nema standards on electrical outlets and cords on those big boats with "receptacles."

08 optimax 90. I got bit by the sparkplugs once myself! The original calls for some NGK something something. Local parts store was out and only had the next best thing which was like bosch iridium or something weird. So i got them. Had this horrible idle. Pulled the vst and cleaned vst pulled the fuel pumps rebuilt it drained the tank all new lines new filters cleaned injectors so on so on. Could NOT figure it out. Called my buddy a merc/ yamaha tech first thing he did was check those plugs and found they were incorrect for the engine. Immediately swapped new ones in and it ran beautifully ever since.

Y’all should really watch “Dirty Garage Guy” on RU-vid who goes into the 4 cylinder engine in depth regarding the whole Alfadan engine scheme. He explain the imbalance issues very well for the 4 cylinder. It’s primarily due to the linear speed differences of the pistons on the upstroke versus the ones on downstroke which cause that imbalance. Great watch if you get some time!

My buddy has a 08 trophy 1703cc (i dont think bayliner makes them anymore. That stopped back in the mid 2000ish) But we are having a hell of a time finding a T TOP for that too. Weird console sizes. Its gonna be a fortune but custom made is probably both these guys best bet.

Guys!!! Do a basic outline…and know it does take TIME…editing? Love what I’ve learned here but the LENGTH is challenging. Keep fixin em right👍.

What would cause a chatter from the outboard when decelerating? Mercury 115 ELPTO (2 stroke 4cyl)

On a 4 stroke 4cyl the pistons would be paired and fire once every 180 degrees but on a 2 stroke they can’t be paired because they have to fire once every 90 degrees. The 2 stroke would have primary unbalance which is really nasty. The 4 stroke is primarily balanced but has a secondary unbalance, not so nasty but much harder to balance with counter weights.

Following !!! over here too now. Please go over the 03-05 ish v6 yamaha's and the corrosion situation as it is today, which ones to consider and what ones to run from and mitigation ideas for bargain engines.

I would be very leary of Lanier marine salvage. I purchased a boat from them and it turned out that they did not have a title for it and George only required a bill of sale where most stated required a title for the boat and trailer to register it. I ended up with several thousand dollars worth of fiberglass that I can do nothing with.

If there was a boat salvage yard near me Id be in there all the time. Depending on the price. Some of them act like they have gold😂

What do you think is to many hours on a used 4stroke outboard? I purchased a 2018 suzuki 300 with 4000 hours on it this winter. 2000 of those hours are at idle.

I have an interesting one for you guys. I have a 1998 Johnson ocean runner 150 hp on a 17-foot Boston whaler outrage ii. At wide-open throttle, the engine is only making 4200 RPMs. Giving me a top speed of 37 mph. Even after getting trimmed up perfectly. The engine runs fine otherwise. Seems way too slow for a 150 on a 17-foot boat.
