Hi everybody this time we look at the story of Propellerheads REBIRTH RB-338 software and compare it with the Roland Cloud TR808, TR909 and TB303. What sounds better?
REBIRTH Info
The ReBirth RB-338 could not have been released nor invented at any better time! The original aimed to emulate and recreate the sound, look and feel of two TB-303's and one TR-808. Released just when those very machines were both in demand, hard to find and very expensive; for little under $200 ReBirth gave any Mac or PC user access to those famous dance sounds. Soon after came the RB-338 which added the TR-909 to the mix making the ReBirth package one of the best and most affordable means of acquiring vintage Roland 303, 808 and 909 sounds!

One part of the story you are missing is the relationship between Ikutaro Kakehashi (founder Roland) and Ernst Nathorst-Böös (one of the founders Propellerhead), it was said that Ikutaro was very impressed with Rebirth. Now the year that Ikutaro passed away (2017) was the year that ReBirth was pulled, the support from the Roland camp was gone :(

Rebirth was coded by Peter jubel ( who also founded propllerheads after leaving clavia ), he also coded the clavia NOrd lead 1 and almost all synths in reason Thor , subtractor ,europa, Parsec etc; Peter JUbel is a legend coder , Erns tNathorst Boos is more of a Business man than a coder

ReBirth 1.0 (before they added the 909) was what got me into making music . I was so bummed when I suddenly couldn’t open up ReBirth (or any of my projects) on my iPad anymore. Being able to have ReBirth on a tablet was a big reason that I got my iPad Air 2. I have a TD-3 now, but I have to say, that the sound quality from ReBirth is still one (probably the...) of the best 303 clones that have been made.

Rebirth has a great sound, in the stylistic sense. And I had a great time with it in the 90s. But the Roland software is so much better than is shown here. Enjoyed the video and energy. Thnx

ReBirth is the first thing that I used. I was addicted as soon as I tried it. I quickly moved on to FL Studio, but ReBirth was extremely fun.

The ReBirth 808 is iconic it's much cleaner than the original, I like both the OG 808 and the Rebirth but ReBirth is probably better then the Roland ARIA hardware and definitely better then the subscription service hell that is Roland Cloud.

@@takethefearoutthegear6229 any help in the manual the keyboard short cut for delete is shift key on the keyboard to program the drums yes rebirth can be controlled by midi cc everything on it is in the manual. But for some strange reason my shift key don't do anything and in the manual it points out that American keyboards are mapped for programming if in another zone in the world you might have to use different keys. Looks like i will have to program my behringer bcr200 but the computer keyboard is real fun to use only maybe i need to try another keyboard.

I remember using RB-338 in 1999 when I was in 8th grade. 😂. We used it to make black metal double bass rollls and choppy acid industrial. Listening today to music other people made blows my mind. Honestly after Roland pulled the plug on rebirth I swore off them. I have slowly been selling all my Roland gear and have vowed never to buy another “new“ piece of Roland gear. Anyone wanna buy a PC200 mk2? How about a JP-8000 or RD700SX? Damn…😂 Edit: some chap just hit me up about my VS-840😅

If you open an early Reason (below 7) and 'right click' > select rewire... you can then open Rewire inside Reason as an instrument. Rebirth was available free in the Rebirth Museum for quite a few years before being released on IOS., it then disappeared.

A video in 2022 covering Rebirth RB-338 ? ... kids today don't know we had DAWs before most of us had flat panel LCDs on our desktops (30 lbs of glass CRT instead!)

I remember Rebirth from the 90s as well and I've loved it. In a direct comparison to Roland's Cloud software as seen on this video, it sounds better in my ears too. But in order to make a comparison between the two fair and neutral, shouldn't Rebirth's FX (compressor, distortion) have been disabled in the first place?

I think rebirth wins because of all the amazing mods plus you can get over 300 songs for 8 MB though the mods are a bit larger. It has pattern editor, including other tools like midi transfer. Plus it is stereo. Also u can rewire it to reaper or any other DAW so you can some reverb.

ReBirth is louder, but I kind of feel like Roland has a little more authenticity in the sound, compared to the OG hardware. Maybe I'm bugging, but that's my opinion. Obviously the hardware is better, but I feel like the Roland has a little bit of an analog vibe. I wonder if they have voltage drop emulation like the analog hardware. I got the free version of Roland Cloud, but I never really got into it. I have a ton of software, but I'm getting into hardware now. I've been using a computer to make music for 20 years, I'm tired of clicking a mouse to make music. I now have a nice synth setup, and I haven't missed the software. Software is a scam. I have over 10k usd in buyers remorse.

Great video guys. I found that if you upgrade Windows 7 to Windows 10 with the software already installed you don’t have to jump through those hoops in Windows 10. Even Rewire will continue to work so that you can run Rebirth inside Reason 9. I can run Rebirth with my originally purchased install disc. Remember to make back ups and multiple system images to save you massive amounts of time re-installing the OS’s and the software in case something goes wrong.

Rebirth 303 does something the original does not: you can have a whole bass line with slide notes, on the original if you do this the bass line fades out... Point goes to Rebirth.

Yeah, weird init, I'm a Rebirth user from back in the day and I'd say it sounds better than the Roland Cloud. And I'm thinking of selling my Roland TB-03 and sticking with my Eurorack gear.

I never understood Rebirth till the day I bought a Behringer TD3 ... There is a RU-vidr Copych who create a "Micro Rebirth" with an ESP32 and Arduino. Search in YT for "Arduino DIY: One ESP32 = 2 synthesizers + drums sampler + effects + midi (two tb303's + tr808)" - with one ESP32 .. max. 20$ as a small Hardware-Solution. Another developer is developing a Sequencer which come near to the old boxes which is called "ACIDUINO V2" - togehter it would be possible to create a handheld Rebirth.

Roland should get together with Propellerheads (Reason Studios) and make a Reason Rebirth Rack Extension that requires/uses the Roland Cloud emulations. That should mend their problems, and get a whole mess of people to subscribe to Roland Cloud.

One thing that sets RB-338 far apart from all others is the fx section. I really wish they were made into Rack Extensions. I doubt Roland has the rights to those effects.

Up to Reason 10.1 had the rebirth machine so you could bring it straight into Reason for processing.
