Having the edge of the spine be a sharp edge is more important than the actual angle. And rounding over of the edge of the spine will dramatically decrease the effectiveness. I actually file the back of my knives to make the "leading edge" when scraping a slightly acute angle (87deg ish). I find that it is sharper, better for scraping hardwoods, and better on a ferro rod. This does give the knife a "handedness preference" when scraping. This is the same basic angle I use when sharpening a cabinet scraper.
@joelbenoitthewanderingbiso4976

don't know why one would want to "scrape" hardwoods anyway.

Having a pre-made flame extender like cotton wool & petroleum jelly (CWAPJ) can make life enormously easier. Fat wood is great, but I personally have found that a small dab of CWAPJ to catch the spark rather helpful. And no, that's not a reflection of my skill level, it's more an appreciation of the material limitations.

Question about technique: Should you aim to draw the full length of the rod when creating sparks to avoid developing a "canoe" where the middle of the ferro rod is more worn down than the tip? Or does it really not matter?

Nice demo. Don't know why some instructors still teach that the striker (knife) has to be carbon steel to work with a ferro rod. I think they get confused with traditional flint & steel. At least you nicely showed how well a stainless steel knife with a 90º spine works with the ferro rod.

Mr Canterbury, Your videos, are as always, awesome. I have a request, if you are interested. On the lines of self reliance, have you ever considered making a pair of shoes/boots out of an old tire? No minimum specifications or anything. Just a useful pair of footwear that is closed toe. Thanks again for all you do.
@Doxymeister
@Doxymeister 3 года назад
Now that I think about it, that's a neat idea. In a survival situation, footwear isn't going to last forever, and you must take care of your feet if you are to survive.

You can also shave some of the material from the rod into the tinder. This works great if the rod you have is short and small diameter.

Because ferro rods tend to be an aspect of the survival/Bushcraft community which is people who like to beat on and abuse their knives. And putting a Ferro rod in a knife would mean there's a large void in the handle which does not do well with impact and rattling. That being said not everyone uses a ferro rod with a belt knife, I think that combo is a little less common than people think.

@maxpinson5002
@maxpinson5002 3 года назад
Won't work with real flint rock, like you would find in the wild and use to knap arrowheads and cutting tools and such. When you use it for making a spark, the hard rock is shaving bits of the steel from the knife blade that combust. The opposite is true with a ferro rod. The sharp edge of the striking surface is shaving away bits of combustible metal from the ferro rod to make fire
@joelbenoitthewanderingbiso4976
@joelbenoitthewanderingbiso4976 3 года назад
no, cause he's not using flint, he's using a ferro rod, to different things. Though yes a stainless steel knife will work on a ferro rod.
