I'm a 40 + year woodworker with a 20 year old brush. Proper maintenance ensures a quality finish. Most users don't clean their brushes properly and end up with a poor finish. Let me demonstarte the proper paint brush cleaning method.
Please leave comments and ask questions. I really do love to hear from y'all.

My uncle was a life-long, high-end painting contractor; born, raised, and trained in Germany. I clearly remember as a child how he treated his tools. Your video reminded me of his diligence and patience. Most people want a quickie method of cleaning brushes, or better yet, discard the tool and don't bother with cleaning. Considering the odor-damaging chemicals in solvents, discard is not such a bad idea. But it's incongruous to using a great tool. Great tools are expensive by default. This video is not for the discard people. I wear a respirator and gloves when using oil-based products now, and I clean my brushes exactly as you do. The whole process takes longer than five minutes, but I don't care about the clock. I care more about my tools. I hang my brushes to dry. Instead of plastic yogurt cups, I use large-mouthed glass jars. I have quite the collection. Thank you for taking the time to produce this video. For English-speaking crafts people around the world, this is a great learning tool.

As far as an environmental concern what do you do with your leftover mineral spirits it's not recommended to put down the kitchen sink but I'm curious as to what you do with the bulk of your leftovers
@KJ_nyc
@KJ_nyc 10 месяцев назад
@@sallyhill7747 I strain mine and re-use it. Most paint sediment falls to the bottom of a cleaning jar/can. The top portion may not be perfectly clear, but it is extremely effective and re-usable when using it for a first-clean application on a very saturated brush or roller. When the spirits are beyond re-use, they go into an old-empty paint can clearly marked "chemical paint spirit WASTE." In NYC, we have special sites for chemical waste disposal. Most large apartment buildings in bigger cities require specially marked cans, and they know how to properly dispose of them. If you live in a house, contact your local waste department, I'm sure they will offer information on how to properly dispose of chemical waste. In our home, NOTHING inappropriate goes down any drain. In apartment buildings, the super or building management usually offers rules concerning disposal.

Hey Joseph. They age from the the ferrule down. Don't allow the paint to dry on the brush and clean the bristles as high up close to the handle as you can and you'll be amazed how long a good brush will last! Thanx for the feedback, best . . . paul

If you start with a good quality brush it should last you forever. The cheap big box store brushes are ridiculous. But if you buy a good Purdy or any other China bristle brush, you should be set for life. My mom used her paintbrushes throughout my childhood and youth. She probably still has them but might not have used them for a while. You get the point.

paulsDIYsolutions, They are brand new brushes that we have used for a first coat of polyurethane on the shed floor. I don’t think we washed them properly, so they became petrified the next day. I watched Bob Vela, this old house, and many other videos before I came across yours. I tried warm water and soap, a vinegar soak overnight, and eventually boiling water on the bristles. Keep in mind the poly is water based. Then I finally broke down and used paint thinner. They seem OK but not like new condition. I was thinking of getting a bristle comb, and trying hot water with soap. Ultimately if none of these steps work, I’ll just have to break down and buy a new brush. The cost is not much, when you look at how much I saved by not hiring a professional. But I like taking care of my stuff, so I’ll keep trying. Thanks so much for responding so quickly!

This is good advice. Using a made-for-purpose brush spinner after each rinse, and after washing will prolong the useful life of your cleaning solution and may get your brush a little cleaner. (Of course, the brush should be spun in a cardboard box, etc. to prevent spraying yourself and surroundings with the cleaner). If you are using two different paints using the same solvent, you can go from black to white paint with the same brush in a couple of minutes this way; if you did this you'd wait to do the water wash until cleaning after the second color. Wrapping the brush in the original jacket, brown paper or newspaper after washing helps it retain its proper shape and keeps dust off if it is not to be used for a while. An alternative to combining all the used cleaner is to periodically dispose of the dirtiest cleaner, and start using old #2 as the new #1. Add a new container of cleaner for the last rinse. A properly cleaned used good brush beats the pants off a brand new cheap brush. With a brush spinner, you can also clean rollers fairly easily, though this is practical only for water-based finishes. Various manufacturers make brush spinners; an example of one can be seen at twww.homedepot.com/p/Project-Select-Brush-and-Roller-Cleaner-HD-6006/202564315.

I sucessfuly rejuvinated old paint brushes that had an oil base paint build up at the ferul. I soak them to the top of the bristles in laquer thiner over night. I them do the soap and water routine using a metalic paint brush comb to clean the deposits from the top of the bristles. I always store my brushes by wrapping them in a paper towel to hold the bristles together. The paper towel wicks away an moisture.

Love the information here and in the bubble-free poly application videos. Going to be applying poly to some sapele butcher blocks for new countertops soon. Been wondering, though, how do I keep the brushes between coats? It would seem to me that bagging them wouldn't cut it, and leaving them in a cup of poly seems to be asking for trouble, but I can't imagine you have to clean the brushes between coats. Tips?

Hey Malkierian.If you want the best finish, YOU CLEAN TO PERFECTION immediately after each and every use. Your brush is an important tool. Great video! I'm glad I'm not the only person using multiple yogurt containers. 3 Questions: 1 - on the last paint thinner rinse I turn the brush upside down and let the paint thinner "fall through" the ferrule, drain out the corner, and run down the handle into the container - Am I doing more harm that good? 2 - I have been using a brush cleaner tool and I stick the metal tongs into the top of the bristles as close as to the ferrule as I can get and then stroke the tool down. I do this for the exact reason that you described, about how the top of the bristles becoming hard over time; I'm trying to avoid that. Again, am I doing more hard than good? 3 - Shouldn't the brush go back into it's cardboard holder at the end to keep the bristles tapered and straight for its next use? I use white or black china bristle brushes and I never knew you could apply dish detergent to them! Thanks for the great videos.

Hey Ray. So sorry don't know how I missed your comments. I answer twice daily. Anyway doesn't sound like the response was like an emergency, especially since you are doing everything right!! I like your #1 idea. I talked with C Johnson CEO of the Paint Brush Corp. The glues brush manufacturers use in their construction is resistant to mineral spirits, naptha, lacquer thinner, paint thinner, turpentine and acetone so no need to worry about that. Brushes do harden close to the ferrule over time no stopping that. I don't mash the brush when cleaning but I do bend the bristles when dipping in mineral spirits to try to get the bristle as close to the ferrule as possible. I agree with three. My garndfather used to rap his brushes in newspaper while still wet. I will wrap in paper towels if the brush looks frizzy. If not I just hand shape them after spinning them and hang em to dry. Again sorry for the delay, still don't know you slipped through the cracks. best . . . paul

A couple of suggestions from a professional painter....use a brush comb to get paint out from near the ferrule. After spinning, drag the bristles on a bar if wet soap-as it dries, the bristles won't splay all over. After I use oils, I rinse m6 brush in paint thinner to clean then add a few drops of baby oil to keep bristles in alignment. Breaking in a brush with baby oil and getting some near the ferrule helps keep paint from settling in there. Works well for art brushes too.

Hey Dana. Paint thinner and mineral spirits are pretty much the same (I'm not a chemist so I know I'm gonna get trashed on that one!). Paint thinner has a rather strong aroma vs mineral spirits but both function pretty much the same. You are nor supposed to dump mineral spirits into public sewer systems. It can be recycled at a center. You can also let it sit and the residues will settle to the bottom. It can then be filtered and reused. best . . . paul

Hey MrColes. I clean after each and every use. A good brush holds a lot of material, dispenses it evening and doesn't drip or run (even upside down for a while). Here's the deal. For a great finish a healthy brush capable of all the above is an essential. Brushes tend to harden close to the ferule and spread outward. Once the center core becomes stiff the brush has lost it's ability to perform well. Placing it in a plastic bag, refrigerating, etc, etc doesn't stop the core from stiffening. More info than you bargained for but hopefully it helps. best . . . paul

Hey Stephan. There are 100's of average to poor quality brushes and very, very, very few good brushes. Good brushes are almost impossible to find in the hardware or paint isles. We have become a throw-away society. People spend big bucks on designer wear and high end autos but buy the cheapest tool that might accomplish a task they understand little about. Retailers won't tie up shelf space for quality tools that can sit for years. I bought my last brush from an art supply store. They sell varnish brushes that artists use. They have them in 3 inches. Check out St Louis Art Supply under varnish brushes. best . . . paul

First, thank you for all your mentoring. I follow a lot of what you do..all top notch advice. I just used this method to clean my white bristle finishing brush after each coat of an oil based polyurethane (and your method for applying it). My problem is this: After I clean the brush, the brush seems very clean, soap lathers up nicely. I put the brush through 6-7 soap cleaning cycles. I spin dry it as you do and the brush feels clean and soft. By the next day though when the brush is dry, the brush is somewhat stiff again. I can't get the brush to stay soft. I bent the bristles back and forth to get them flexible again before using it. When I apply the next coat of poly though, it doesn't go on nearly as nicely as when the brush was new. Is there a way maybe to prime the brush before using it maybe? Any suggestions? Thank you
@paulsDIYsolutions
@paulsDIYsolutions Год назад
Hey Stuckinthemiddle. First off great song from the 70's. Try a presoak in mineral spirits (or paint thinner). It softens the bristles and preps the brush for the first laydown. I soak for 2-3 minutes and then remove excess thinner by running it over paper towels for a few minutes. The first dip and brush stroke without presoaking causes a massive overflow of liquid. It works. PS. I even soak my nylon brushes in water for water borne finishes. While the bristles don't absorb the thinner they do retain moisture around the fibers making the flow better. best . . . paul

Excellent videos, thank you! I’m a new-ish woodworker/finisher. I’ve done lots (lots!) of baseboard and house trim, and now am starting furniture. Watched your bubbles video and thought “well, the bookcase I just finished today with water based poly, using the painting brush technique with full strength poly looks like it came out well, so maybe water based is more forgiving than oil, or my technique was just awesome(!)....” Then I looked at it dry today and noticed all the small flaws you mentioned! So I’ll be trying your techniques next time, but I want to check a few things. 1. Should I thin the water based poly 3:1 like you did with oil based? If so, do all coats with it thin, or last one full strength? 2. What is the best order to coat a bookshelf or cabinet: top-bottom, bottom-top, sides first or last? Or is it best to stain and finish before assembly? I have trouble keeping the coat from dripping and pooling in corners when I finish the assembled project, and it’s hard to finish the undersides of the shelves too, so I wonder if pros finish before assembly. 3. Other than synthetic bristles for water based, is there anything specific I should look for in a finishing brush for water based? I used oil poly when I first began working on trim, but gave it up due to the cleaning process, but even cleaning my water based brushes I end up replacing them every year or so, because I am not as thorough as you show here; I usually only use water, no soap. I’ll try soap and more thoroughness from now on, until I use up my water based. Maybe then I will try oil based again, now that I know I should be able to clean and reuse a brush for 20 years!
@paulsDIYsolutions
@paulsDIYsolutions 4 года назад
Hey Lancelots. I would only pre-finish your project if you'll be gluing the pieces. Glue won't takes stain so it'll show if it seeps (and it always does). I would thin all coats of water based polyurethane to get a perfect finish. The only reason I did full strength was it was a dark stairwell that wouldn't show minor flaws. I never do full strength on any of my furniture. Check out these sites for quality finish brushes: Tools for Working Wood, Gordon Brush and the Paint Brush Corp. Yes thin water based polyurethane as well. And lastly oil based polyurethane is actually more forgiving because it has a longer set up time. That additional dry time allows brush marks to level, micro bubbles to pop and additional time to inspect and correct (only if reeeeeally necessary). I am a big believer in laying it down and leaving it alone. Lastly cleaning is an intricate part of finishing!! best . . . paul

Hey Scuteri. Couple things you can do. First is take it to a local recycle center or you can get a big old glass jar with a lid and pour it in and keep adding for as long as it takes to fill it. Eventually the resins will settle tro the bottom leaving you with reusable clean mineral spirits on the top. Siphen off the minberal spirits and the resin can discarded as normal waste. best . . . paul

My grandfather showed me when I was a teenager to put the old mineral spirits in a covered glass dish. The next time he cleaned his brush, he would take the lid off of the dish, and pour all of the clear top layer of used turpentine into the lid. He would use that for the first pass of brush cleaning. Then dump the reused turpentine into the bowl. Then he'd pour new turpentine into the lid, wash the brush again (just like Paul does), then dump that into the dish,,, and fill the lid with more new turpentine, and clean the brush again, and dump the used into the dish,,,, repeating until the brush was clean as it would get. Then he'd clean it again with soap and water for a couple of cycles. He always used Fels-Naptha soap,,, a very old product. He put the lid on the glass dish, and it sat until the next time he had to clean a brush. After a couple of times of cleaning a brush with this method, he'd remove all of the clear turpentine from the bowl, and then throw out the gooey varnish that had settled on the bottom of the dish. The clear turpentine he collected was as good as new, and he would use that for the complete cleaning cycle the next time he cleaned his brush, except only for the last cycle, he would use brand new turpentine. I do this same process 50 year later, and as a result, I use very little new turpentine. And the old varnish gunk I get from the bottom of the covered glass bowl/dish I put onto some paper then burn it in my shop stove (so I don't have to worry about it spontaneously combusting. I still have my grandfather's prized brush, which is made from badger hair. I have never used it, as I consider it an heirloom. He used it on his best work, and though an antique, the bristles are as soft as can be.

Hey Michael. I assume you are doing multiple coats with a different finish or color paint. If you are using water based finishes it shouldn't matter if your brush is damp from the water rinse and spin. Just drag it over a paper towel to remove any excess moisture. IF you are using an oil based finish stop at the final rinse of mineral spirits and dry by spinning and dragging over a towel. If you are doing both water and oil finishes, do the oil first. Hope that makes sense. best . . . paul

@@paulsDIYsolutions A late response Paul,I know. BUT instead of using a chopstick or a toothpick you could try using a brass bristled wire brush (or a really stiff plastic one) to do pretty much the same thing instead. It has softer bristles than a steel one,so it won't really damage the brush. And it won't ever rust either,if you ever have to use water to clean your brush out.

Paul, I asked the other night about putting Tung oil finish on my bench 1st. I painted over it and it looks good. It will face west and have no shadow in South Texas. What should I use to protect? It's Pine
@paulsDIYsolutions
@paulsDIYsolutions 4 года назад
Hey Scott. Kinda controversial subject. With woodworkers clear coating a painted surface is like discussing politics, religion and marriage. Pine is highly subject to rot so you are right to want to protect it. Most of today's EXTERIOR acrylic paints are designed to handle extremes in weather including UV rays. Old school woodworkers look for additional protection and will apply a quality spar varnish over paint. Spar varnish (marine varnish) is designed to be water resistant, have UV blockers and are extremely flexible to avoid cracking during seasonal wood expansion and contractions. Perfect for wooden boats. The downside is the potential of yellowing the color. Personally I would leave the finish alone but you wouldn't be wrong to cover it with spar varnish either. So back to our politics, religion and marriage analogy: THERE IS NO RIGHT ANSWER!!! best . . . paul
