Some retired guy gave me his 50+ yr old Mayline Table a few days ago. I think it's called a Ranger. I guess they still make them and they're not cheap.
The reason the cable adjustment lock is there has nothing to do with calibrating the straightedge before you began to draw. The adjustment is used to align the straightedge to an existing drawing that you need to remount and do edits or additional drawing. I would recommend getting some new double face tape so the edges of your pad are not curling. To align a new paper, I first rotate the paper diagonally under the straightedge to make centering marks (a lot faster than measuring). Mr. Moreland at Lafayette High School would give you a lower grade if your drawing wasn't centered properly. I leave the bar at its lowest position next to the rest stops. I then place the paper on top of the clear edge onto the black bar. This aligns it parallel to the bar. I then tape the top edge, lift the paper under the lower edge, move the bar upwards to tape the lower corners. By mounting the paper as low as possible, you never have to worry about the bar flipping or tearing the paper along the bottom edge. It also allows you to reach the top edge of the paper while seated. The straightedge has no "GEARS" inside. It has four bearing wheels that allow the cable to slide through. Sounds like yours needs some oil. Sorry to be so tough.
Hello. I have an old drafting table with athe setup just like yours plus some other tools as well. We’re can I get the corner screws and black stops for the base of the table. I have the wires but spring is also sprung. Is there an online source to get the parts for the straight edge setup?
How do you check that the edges of the table are still true? Say if you get a chance to buy a used drafting board or table? Or by adjusting the calibration, does this solve any possible problems with the table edges?

I almost broadened my knowledge on drafting tables but because of your diligent spell checking capabilities I immediately stopped watching! Thank you for your service not only on RU-vid but also for the internet on the whole. Is there a way I can subscribe to your newsletter where you point out grammatical or vocabulary errors? Like perhaps a video wherein someone on an oil rig is explaining their job and you point out that they used a dangling participle? I mean, I would immediately stop watching regardless of how interesting I found the video because you, the hero that you are, in your intellectual might, pointed out his unforgivable error.
