It's a couple of days before Christmas in December 2017 and my last jobs of the year are a bunch of smaller jobs for regular customers. Don't normally do this sort of stuff but I always do what I can for my regulars to help them out! Sometimes it's not all about alcove units and bespoke bookcases - sometimes it's just about hanging mirrors, TV brackets and general woodwork repairs. Anyway, this is a quick day in the life of doing some of the smaller joinery jobs. Don't forget to Subscribe and follow @GosforthHandyman on Insta. Enjoy and have a fantastic 2018!

A thumbs up for not using the supplied screws, a lesson I unfortunately seem to need to relearn more than I should admit.

Very nice job. The care you take in your work, and of your customers homes, is a true hallmark of great craftsmanship. On the first job I always judge a contractor/sub by their precision, organisation, and how tidy they are to see if they return. You'd pass with flying colours. Happy New Year ! ps- supplied screws are usually crap :^)

I'm working my way through your videos and almost all of them have been really helpful in making me feel like I'm not a complete noob but weirdly this video had the opposite effect. The finish you left on that skirting appeared, to me, to be almost like magic!

Just watched this having found your site and really enjoy it, nice low key presenting👍. I do similar work, one word of caution, it’s best to wear some inside footwear to give a bit of protection to your feet, I carry a pair of crocs in my van at all times And wear them when needed.

I do really appreciate the content, as I am always curious if there is a faster way to complete a task. Like filling screw holes .. In the US, I would have use quick dry wall spackle . It is so easy to apply and dries in minutes so you can paint during the same application. Time is money, it would appear a lot of time wasted on trying to match the miter finish on the tight corner. First, I would have measured the space before installing the cabinet and repaired the corner before installing and having to work around the cabinet in such a tight space. 2nd, knowing that option is gone, I would have used white silicone caulk and hand form a new rever with the caulk. It saves sooo much time and the finish product is always better then trying to match with my carpentry. Spackle and caulking are inexpensive products that every good Handy Man should have in his tool box. just my thoughts.......

A great look at your work day there. i was rather hoping you took those Mirrors as they could have some nice frames made for them. Also why can't students learn how to fix things themselves? a bracket for a hanging basket come on that's not rocket science is it? It must make you laugh when you see little jobs like that, that really they should do themselves, mind you it's money for your pocket. You need a go pro or something attached to you, save your arms, plus can get close up on your jobs that you do, oh one last thing, you drive to fast ha ha ha. Hope that you and your family have a great 2018. Barry (Wirral)

Hello Andy,Larry here, just turned 71 last Oct,been retired for well over 11 yrs due to heart failure etc....Back in early 70s and been HGV driving ...made unemployed so retrained at my local Skil Centre, here in Gloucester......6 month down the line and still not knowing a great deal about carpentry/joinery I landed a job with a local guy......he gave me my first break into this line of work..Time passed and in 1997 found an old stable fitted out with all the woodworking machines I wanted.....apart for a moulder, which came from an outfit in Essex for £600-no tooling! She was a Wadkin and did me well. A year later,my wife suffered a massive stroke, but with Gods help, she came through. At this time I took on the workshop at £400 p.c.m,inc. electric.!.. S.D.F was born.......made none standard size doors, windows and furniture. All at £120 a day......no matter if it was an 8hr. or 16hr day.........mad? Yes,guess I was,and so nieve. At the end of yr 1 my accountant asked me if I was doing this as a hobby.....your words too ,I guess? Me,still of B>S. said things will get better......End of yr 2.....I gave in,shut the lot down and GAVE away the moulder + over £3000 worth of tooling to my so called MATE for rent unpaid. So much for friends,eh? Apart from the basic grounding I had thanks to the 6month training, the rest of what I know now has been self taught.I truly miss it.All the best mate.Larry Duncan,Gloucester.

Cool “Day in the life” video Andy. You need one of the new Walbot units that hooks on to the back of your android phone and acts as a stud finder, metal and electrical find and it shows a picture on your phone screen of what’s in the wall.... pretty cool item. Ron

To save on sanding the filler/bogg, I use a tungsten steel scraper or a sharp chisel to carve the shape before it fully cures to save on sanding. Takes a bit if trial and error to learn the skill but it results in a lot less dust and drying time. 20:40 passion and warfare!! Havent heard that for a while ahah
